John 11

NEW JERUSALEM	NOVA VULGATA
1 There was a man named Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister, Martha, and he wasil .	1 Erat autem quidam lan guens Lazarus a Bethania, de castello Mariae etMarthae sororis eius.
2 It was the same Mary, the sister of the sick man Lazarus, who anointed the Lord with ointment andwiped his feet with her hair.	2 Maria autem erat, quae unxit Dominum unguento etextersit pedes eius capillis suis, cuius frater Lazarus infirmabatur.
3 The sisters sent this message to Jesus, 'Lord, the man you love is il .'	3 Miseruntergo sorores ad eum dicentes: “ Domine, ecce, quem amas, infirmatur ”.
4 On receiving the message, Jesus said, 'This sickness will not end in death, but it is for God's glory sothat through it the Son of God may be glorified.'	4 Audiens autem Iesus dixit: “ Infirmitas haec non est ad mortem sed progloria Dei, ut glorificetur Filius Dei per eam ”.
5 Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus,	5 Diligebat autem IesusMartham et sororem eius et Lazarum.
6 yet when he heard that he was il he stayed where he was for two more days	6 Ut ergo audivit quia infirmabatur, tuncquidem mansit in loco, in quo erat, duobus diebus;
7 before saying to the disciples, 'Let us go back to Judaea.'	7 deinde post hoc dicitdiscipulis: “ Eamus in Iudaeam iterum ”.
8 The disciples said, 'Rabbi, it is not long since the Jews were trying to stone you; are you going backthere again?'	8 Dicunt ei discipuli: “ Rabbi,nunc quaerebant te Iudaei lapidare, et iterum vadis illuc? ”.
9 Jesus replied: Are there not twelve hours in the day? No one who walks in the daytime stumbles,having the light of this world to see by;	9 ResponditIesus: “ Nonne duodecim horae sunt diei? Si quis ambulaverit in die, nonoffendit, quia lucem huius mundi videt;
10 anyone who walks around at night stumbles, having no light as a guide.	10 si quis autem ambulaverit in nocte,offendit, quia lux non est in eo ”.
11 He said that and then added, 'Our friend Lazarus is at rest; I am going to wake him.'	11 Haec ait et post hoc dicit eis: “Lazarus amicus noster dormit, sed vado, ut a somno exsuscitem eum ”.
12 The disciples said to him, 'Lord, if he is at rest he wil be saved.'	12 Dixerunt ergo ei discipuli: “ Domine, si dormit, salvus erit ”.
13 Jesus was speaking of the death of Lazarus, but they thought that by 'rest' he meant 'sleep';	13 Dixeratautem Iesus de morte eius, illi autem putaverunt quia de dormitione somnidiceret.
14 so Jesus put it plainly, 'Lazarus is dead;	14 Tunc ergo dixit eis Iesus manifeste: “ Lazarus mortuus est,
15 and for your sake I am glad I was not there because now you will believe. But let us go to him.'	15 etgaudeo propter vos, ut credatis, quoniam non eram ibi; sed eamus ad eum ”.
16 Then Thomas -- known as the Twin -- said to the other disciples, 'Let us also go to die with him.'	16 Dixit ergo Thomas, qui dicitur Didymus, ad condiscipulos: “ Eamus et nos, utmoriamur cum eo! ”.
17 On arriving, Jesus found that Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days already.	17 Venit itaque Iesus et invenit eum quattuor dies iam in monumento habentem.
18 Bethany is only about two miles from Jerusalem,	18 Erat autem Bethania iuxta Hierosolymam quasi stadiis quindecim.
19 and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them about their brother.	19 Multi autemex Iudaeis venerant ad Martham et Mariam, ut consolarentur eas de fratre.
20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming she went to meet him. Mary remained sitting in thehouse.	20 Martha ergo ut audivit quia Iesus venit, occurrit illi; Maria autem domisedebat.
21 Martha said to Jesus, 'Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died,	21 Dixit ergo Martha ad Iesum: “ Domine, si fuisses hic, frater meusnon esset mortuus!
22 but even now I know that God will grant whatever you ask of him.'	22 Sed et nunc scio quia, quaecumque poposceris a Deo, dabittibi Deus ”.
23 Jesus said to her, 'Your brother wil rise again.'	23 Dicit illi Iesus: “ Resurget frater tuus ”.
24 Martha said, 'I know he wil rise again at the resurrection on the last day.'	24 Dicit eiMartha: “ Scio quia resurget in resurrectione in novissimo die ”.
25 Jesus said: I am the resurrection. Anyone who believes in me, even though that person dies, wil live,	25 Dixitei Iesus: “ Ego sum resurrectio et vita. Qui credit in me, etsi mortuusfuerit, vivet;
26 and whoever lives and believes in me wil never die. Do you believe this?	26 et omnis, qui vivit et credit in me, non morietur in aeternum.Credis hoc? ”.
27 'Yes, Lord,' she said, 'I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who was to come intothis world.'	27 Ait illi: “ Utique, Domine; ego credidi quia tu esChristus Filius Dei, qui in mundum venisti ”.
28 When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in a low voice, 'The Master ishere and wants to see you.'	28 Et cum haec dixisset, abiit et vocavit Mariam sororem suam silentio dicens:“ Magister adest et vocat te ”.
29 Hearing this, Mary got up quickly and went to him.	29 Illa autem ut audivit, surrexit cito etvenit ad eum;
30 Jesus had not yet come into the vil age; he was still at the place where Martha had met him.	30 nondum enim venerat Iesus in castellum, sed erat adhuc in illoloco, ubi occurrerat ei Martha.
31 When the Jews who were in the house comforting Mary saw her get up so quickly and go out, theyfol owed her, thinking that she was going to the tomb to weep there.	31 Iudaei igitur, qui erant cum ea in domo etconsolabantur eam, cum vidissent Mariam quia cito surrexit et exiit, secuti sunteam putantes: “ Vadit ad monumentum, ut ploret ibi ”.
32 Mary went to Jesus, and as soon as she saw him she threw herself at his feet, saying, 'Lord, if youhad been here, my brother would not have died.'	32 Maria ergo, cumvenisset ubi erat Iesus, videns eum cecidit ad pedes eius dicens ei: “ Domine,si fuisses hic, non esset mortuus frater meus! ”.
33 At the sight of her tears, and those of the Jews who had come with her, Jesus was greatly distressed,and with a profound sigh he said,	33 Iesus ergo, ut vidit eamplorantem et Iudaeos, qui venerant cum ea, plorantes, fremuit spiritu etturbavit seipsum
34 'Where have you put him?' They said, 'Lord, come and see.'	34 et dixit: “ Ubi posuistis eum? ”. Dicunt ei: “ Domine,veni et vide ”.
35 Jesus wept;	35 Lacrimatus est Iesus.
36 and the Jews said, 'See how much he loved him!'	36 Dicebant ergo Iudaei: “ Eccequomodo amabat eum! ”.
37 But there were some who remarked, 'He opened the eyes of the blind man. Could he not haveprevented this man's death?'	37 Quidam autem dixerunt ex ipsis: “ Non poterat hic,qui aperuit oculos caeci, facere, ut et hic non moreretur? ”.
38 Sighing again, Jesus reached the tomb: it was a cave with a stone to close the opening.	38 Iesus ergo rursum fremens in semetipso, venit ad monumentum; erat autemspelunca, et lapis superpositus erat ei.
39 Jesus said, 'Take the stone away.' Martha, the dead man's sister, said to him, 'Lord, by now he willsmel ; this is the fourth day since he died.'	39 Ait Iesus: “ Tollite lapidem! ”.Dicit ei Martha, soror eius, qui mortuus fuerat: “ Domine, iam foetet;quatriduanus enim est! ”.
40 Jesus replied, 'Have I not told you that if you believe you wil see the glory of God?'	40 Dicit ei Iesus: “ Nonne dixi tibi quoniam, sicredideris, videbis gloriam Dei? ”.
41 So they took the stone away. Then Jesus lifted up his eyes and said: Father, I thank you for hearingmy prayer.	41 Tulerunt ergo lapidem. Iesus autem,elevatis sursum oculis, dixit: “ Pater, gratias ago tibi quoniam audisti me.
42 I myself knew that you hear me always, but I speak for the sake of all these who are standing aroundme, so that they may believe it was you who sent me.	42 Ego autem sciebam quia semper me audis, sed propter populum, qui circumstat,dixi, ut credant quia tu me misisti ”.
43 When he had said this, he cried in a loud voice, 'Lazarus, come out!'	43 Et haec cum dixisset, voce magnaclamavit: “ Lazare, veni foras! ”.
44 The dead man came out, his feet and hands bound with strips of material, and a cloth over his face.Jesus said to them, 'Unbind him, let him go free.'	44 Prodiit, qui fuerat mortuus, ligatuspedes et manus institis; et facies illius sudario erat ligata. Dicit Iesus eis:“ Solvite eum et sinite eum abire ”.
45 Many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary, and had seen what he did, believed in him,	45 Multi ergo ex Iudaeis, qui venerantad Mariam et viderant, quae fecit, crediderunt in eum;
46 but some of them went to the Pharisees to tel them what Jesus had done.	46 quidam autem ex ipsisabierunt ad pharisaeos et dixerunt eis, quae fecit Iesus.
47 Then the chief priests and Pharisees cal ed a meeting. 'Here is this man working al these signs,' theysaid, 'and what action are we taking?	47 Collegerunt ergopontifices et pharisaei concilium et dicebant: “ Quid facimus, quia hic homomulta signa facit?
48 If we let him go on in this way everybody wil believe in him, and the Romans wil come and suppressthe Holy Place and our nation.'	48 Si dimittimus eum sic, omnes credent in eum, et venientRomani et tollent nostrum et locum et gentem! ”.
49 One of them, Caiaphas, the high priest that year, said, 'You do not seem to have grasped thesituation at al ;	49 Unus autem ex ipsis,Caiphas, cum esset pontifex anni illius, dixit eis: “ Vos nescitis quidquam
50 you fail to see that it is to your advantage that one man should die for the people, rather than that thewhole nation should perish.'	50 nec cogitatis quia expedit vobis, ut unus moriatur homo pro populo, et non totagens pereat! ”.
51 He did not speak in his own person, but as high priest of that year he was prophesying that Jesuswas to die for the nation-	51 Hoc autem a semetipso non dixit; sed, cum esset pontifexanni illius, prophetavit quia Iesus moriturus erat pro gente
52 and not for the nation only, but also to gather together into one the scattered children of God.	52 et non tantumpro gente, sed et ut filios Dei, qui erant dispersi, congregaret in unum.
53 From that day onwards they were determined to kill him.	53 Abillo ergo die cogitaverunt, ut interficerent eum.
54 So Jesus no longer went about openly among the Jews, but left the district for a town cal ed Ephraim,in the country bordering on the desert, and stayed there with his disciples.	54 Iesus ergo iam non in palam ambulabat apud Iudaeos, sed abiit inde inregionem iuxta desertum, in civitatem, quae dicitur Ephraim, et ibi morabaturcum discipulis.
55 The Jewish Passover was drawing near, and many of the country people who had gone up toJerusalem before the Passover to purify themselves	55 Proximum autem erat Pascha Iudaeorum, et ascenderunt multi Hierosolymam deregione ante Pascha, ut sanctificarent seipsos.
56 were looking out for Jesus, saying to one another as they stood about in the Temple, 'What do youthink? Will he come to the festival or not?'	56 Quaerebant ergo Iesum etcolloquebantur ad invicem in templo stantes: “ Quid videtur vobis? Numquidveniet ad diem festum? ”.
57 The chief priests and Pharisees had by now given their orders: anyone who knew where he was mustinform them so that they could arrest him.	57 Dederant autem pontifices et pharisaei mandatum,ut, si quis cognoverit, ubi sit, indicet, ut apprehendant eum.
