1 There was a man named Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister, Martha, and he wasil .	1 - Era ammalato un certo Lazzaro di Betania, il villaggio di Maria e Marta sorella di lei.
2 It was the same Mary, the sister of the sick man Lazarus, who anointed the Lord with ointment andwiped his feet with her hair.	2 (Maria era colei che unse d'unguento il Signore e gli asciugò i piedi coi suoi capelli, e Lazzaro, suo fratello, era malato).
3 The sisters sent this message to Jesus, 'Lord, the man you love is il .'	3 Le sue sorelle dunque mandarono a dirgli: «Signore, colui che tu ami, è ammalato».
4 On receiving the message, Jesus said, 'This sickness will not end in death, but it is for God's glory sothat through it the Son of God may be glorified.'	4 Gesù, udito ciò, rispose: «Questa malattia non è mortale, ma per la gloria di Dio, affinchè per essa sia glorificato il Figliuol di Dio».
5 Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus,	5 Gesù poi voleva bene a Marta, alla sorella di lei Maria e a Lazzaro.
6 yet when he heard that he was il he stayed where he was for two more days	6 Com'ebbe sentito ch'egli era ammalato, si trattenne ancora due giorni nello stesso luogo.
7 before saying to the disciples, 'Let us go back to Judaea.'	7 Poi disse ai discepoli: «Torniamo in Giudea».
8 The disciples said, 'Rabbi, it is not long since the Jews were trying to stone you; are you going backthere again?'	8 I discepoli gli dissero: «Rabbi, i Giudei cercavano or ora di lapidarti e tu vuoi tornare di nuovo colà?».
9 Jesus replied: Are there not twelve hours in the day? No one who walks in the daytime stumbles,having the light of this world to see by;	9 Gesù rispose: «Non sono forse dodici le ore del giorno? Se uno cammina di giorno, non inciampa, perchè egli vede la luce di questo mondo;
10 anyone who walks around at night stumbles, having no light as a guide.	10 ma se uno cammina di notte inciampa, perchè gli manca la luce».
11 He said that and then added, 'Our friend Lazarus is at rest; I am going to wake him.'	11 Egli parlò così, poi soggiunse: «Il nostro amico Lazzaro dorme, ma vado a svegliarlo».
12 The disciples said to him, 'Lord, if he is at rest he wil be saved.'	12 Allora i suoi discepoli dissero: «Signore, se dorme, guarirà».
13 Jesus was speaking of the death of Lazarus, but they thought that by 'rest' he meant 'sleep';	13 Ora Gesù aveva parlato della morte di lui, mentre essi avevano creduto che parlasse del riposo del sonno.
14 so Jesus put it plainly, 'Lazarus is dead;	14 Allora Gesù disse loro apertamente: «Lazzaro è morto,
15 and for your sake I am glad I was not there because now you will believe. But let us go to him.'	15 ed io mi rallegro per voi di non essere stato là, affinchè crediate; ma andiamo da lui».
16 Then Thomas -- known as the Twin -- said to the other disciples, 'Let us also go to die with him.'	16 A questa parola Tommaso, chiamato Didimo, disse agli altri discepoli: «Andiamo anche noi e moriamo con lui».
17 On arriving, Jesus found that Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days already.	17 Gesù dunque arrivò e trovò Lazzaro già da quattro giorni nella tomba.
18 Bethany is only about two miles from Jerusalem,	18 Betania distava da Gerusalemme circa quindici stadii;
19 and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them about their brother.	19 molti Giudei erano venuti da Marta e da Maria per consolarle del loro fratello.
20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming she went to meet him. Mary remained sitting in thehouse.	20 Marta, appena seppe della venuta di Gesù, gli andò incontro, mentre Maria se ne stava in casa.
21 Martha said to Jesus, 'Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died,	21 Marta disse a Gesù: «Signore, se tu fossi stato qui, mio fratello non sarebbe morto;
22 but even now I know that God will grant whatever you ask of him.'	22 ma ora so che tutto quello che tu domanderai a Dio, Dio te lo concederà».
23 Jesus said to her, 'Your brother wil rise again.'	23 Gesù disse: «Tuo fratello risorgerà».
24 Martha said, 'I know he wil rise again at the resurrection on the last day.'	24 Marta rispose: «So che risusciterà nella resurrezione all'ultimo giorno».
25 Jesus said: I am the resurrection. Anyone who believes in me, even though that person dies, wil live,	25 Gesù soggiunse: «Io sono la resurrezione e la vita; chi crede in me quand'anche fosse morto vivrà,
26 and whoever lives and believes in me wil never die. Do you believe this?	26 e chi vive e crede in me non morrà in eterno. Credi tu questo?».
27 'Yes, Lord,' she said, 'I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who was to come intothis world.'	27 Ella rispose: «Sì, Signore, ho sempre creduto che tu sei il Cristo, il Figliuolo di Dio, che sei venuto in questo mondo».
28 When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in a low voice, 'The Master ishere and wants to see you.'	28 Detto questo, se ne andò a chiamare Maria, sua sorella, dicendole piano: «Il Maestro è qua e ti chiama».
29 Hearing this, Mary got up quickly and went to him.	29 Non appena ebbe udito, ella si levò e andò a lui,
30 Jesus had not yet come into the vil age; he was still at the place where Martha had met him.	30 che non era ancora entrato nel villaggio, ma stava tuttora nel luogo dove Marta l'aveva incontrato.
31 When the Jews who were in the house comforting Mary saw her get up so quickly and go out, theyfol owed her, thinking that she was going to the tomb to weep there.	31 I Giudei poi, che erano con essa in casa e la confortavano, quando videro Maria alzarsi in fretta e uscire, la seguirono, dicendo: «Va' al sepolcro a piangere».
32 Mary went to Jesus, and as soon as she saw him she threw herself at his feet, saying, 'Lord, if youhad been here, my brother would not have died.'	32 Maria, giunta al luogo dov'era Gesù, al vederlo, si gettò ai suoi piedi e gli disse: «Signore, se tu fossi stato qui, mio fratello non sarebbe morto!».
33 At the sight of her tears, and those of the Jews who had come with her, Jesus was greatly distressed,and with a profound sigh he said,	33 Gesù vedendo lei piangere e con lei piangere anche i Giudei che l'accompagnavano, fremette in ispirito e si turbò.
34 'Where have you put him?' They said, 'Lord, come and see.'	34 Poi domandò: «Dove l'avete posto?». Gli risposero: «Signore, vieni e vedi».
35 Jesus wept;	35 E Gesù pianse.
36 and the Jews said, 'See how much he loved him!'	36 Allora i Giudei dissero: «Guarda, quanto l'amava!».
37 But there were some who remarked, 'He opened the eyes of the blind man. Could he not haveprevented this man's death?'	37 Ma alcuni di loro soggiungevano: «Non poteva costui che aprì gli occhi al cieco nato, fare che questo non morisse?».
38 Sighing again, Jesus reached the tomb: it was a cave with a stone to close the opening.	38 Allora Gesù, fremendo di nuovo in se stesso, venne al sepolcro, ch'era una grotta con una pietra sovrapposta ad essa.
39 Jesus said, 'Take the stone away.' Martha, the dead man's sister, said to him, 'Lord, by now he willsmel ; this is the fourth day since he died.'	39 Gesù disse: «Togliete la pietra!». E a Marta, la sorella del morto, che gli osservava: «Signore, già puzza, perchè da quattro giorni è lì»,
40 Jesus replied, 'Have I not told you that if you believe you wil see the glory of God?'	40 Gesù rispose: «Non ti ho detto che, se credi, vedrai la gloria di Dio?».
41 So they took the stone away. Then Jesus lifted up his eyes and said: Father, I thank you for hearingmy prayer.	41 Tolsero dunque la pietra, e Gesù, alzati gli occhi al cielo, disse: «Padre, ti ringrazio d'avermi ascoltato.
42 I myself knew that you hear me always, but I speak for the sake of all these who are standing aroundme, so that they may believe it was you who sent me.	42 Io sapevo che tu mi ascolti sempre, ma l'ho detto per il popolo che mi circonda, affinchè creda che tu mi hai mandato».
43 When he had said this, he cried in a loud voice, 'Lazarus, come out!'	43 E detto questo con gran voce esclamò: «Lazzaro, vieni fuori!».
44 The dead man came out, his feet and hands bound with strips of material, and a cloth over his face.Jesus said to them, 'Unbind him, let him go free.'	44 E il morto uscì; coi piedi e le mani legate da fasce ed il viso coperto da un sudario. Gesù disse loro: «Slegatelo e lasciatelo andare».
45 Many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary, and had seen what he did, believed in him,	45 Così molti Giudei, venuti da Maria e da Marta, avendo veduto quanto aveva fatto Gesù, credettero in lui.
46 but some of them went to the Pharisees to tel them what Jesus had done.	46 Ma alcuni di loro andarono dai Farisei e raccontarono quel che Gesù aveva fatto.
47 Then the chief priests and Pharisees cal ed a meeting. 'Here is this man working al these signs,' theysaid, 'and what action are we taking?	47 I pontefici e i Farisei radunarono pertanto il Sinedrio, e dicevano: «Che facciamo? Quest'uomo opera molti miracoli.
48 If we let him go on in this way everybody wil believe in him, and the Romans wil come and suppressthe Holy Place and our nation.'	48 Se lo lasciamo fare tutti crederanno in lui, e verranno i Romani e distruggeranno la nostra città e la nostra nazione».
49 One of them, Caiaphas, the high priest that year, said, 'You do not seem to have grasped thesituation at al ;	49 Allora uno di essi, di nome Caifa, che in quell'anno era sommo sacerdote, disse loro: «Voi non capite nulla
50 you fail to see that it is to your advantage that one man should die for the people, rather than that thewhole nation should perish.'	50 e non riflettete che val meglio che per il popolo muoia un solo uomo, e non perisca l'intera nazione».
51 He did not speak in his own person, but as high priest of that year he was prophesying that Jesuswas to die for the nation-	51 Egli disse ciò non da se stesso, ma perchè essendo in quell'anno sommo sacerdote, profetò che Gesù doveva morire per la nazione;
52 and not for the nation only, but also to gather together into one the scattered children of God.	52 e non soltanto per la nazione, ma anche per raccogliere insieme i figliuoli di Dio dispersi.
53 From that day onwards they were determined to kill him.	53 Così da quel giorno deliberarono d'ucciderlo.
54 So Jesus no longer went about openly among the Jews, but left the district for a town cal ed Ephraim,in the country bordering on the desert, and stayed there with his disciples.	54 Perciò Gesù oramai non s'intratteneva in pubblico presso i Giudei; bensì se ne andò nella regione vicina al deserto, in una città di nome Efrem, dove soggiornò coi suoi discepoli.
55 The Jewish Passover was drawing near, and many of the country people who had gone up toJerusalem before the Passover to purify themselves	55 S'avvicinava frattanto la Pasqua dei Giudei, e molti di quella regione andarono a Gerusalemme prima della Pasqua per purificarsi.
56 were looking out for Jesus, saying to one another as they stood about in the Temple, 'What do youthink? Will he come to the festival or not?'	56 E cercavano di Gesù, e stando nel tempio si domandavano a vicenda: «Che ne dite? Verrà egli alla festa?».
57 The chief priests and Pharisees had by now given their orders: anyone who knew where he was mustinform them so that they could arrest him.	57 Intanto i Pontefici e i Farisei avevano dato ordine che, se qualcuno sapeva dove fosse, lo riferisse, affinchè lo si potesse prendere.
