1 There was a man named Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister, Martha, and he wasil .	1 ויהי איש חולה לעזר שמו מבית היני כפר מרים ומרתא אחותה
2 It was the same Mary, the sister of the sick man Lazarus, who anointed the Lord with ointment andwiped his feet with her hair.	2 היא מרים אשר משחה את האדון בשמן המר ותנגב את רגליו בשערותיה ועתה לעזר אחיה חלה
3 The sisters sent this message to Jesus, 'Lord, the man you love is il .'	3 ותשלחנה אחיותיו אליו לאמר אדני הנה זה אשר אהבת חלה הוא
4 On receiving the message, Jesus said, 'This sickness will not end in death, but it is for God's glory sothat through it the Son of God may be glorified.'	4 וישמע ישוע ויאמר זאת המחלה איננה למות כי אם לכבוד האלהים למען יכבד בה בן האלהים
5 Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus,	5 וישוע אהב את מרתא ואת אחותה ואת לעזר
6 yet when he heard that he was il he stayed where he was for two more days	6 ויהי כשמעו כי חלה ויתמהמה וישב יומים במקום אשר הוא שם
7 before saying to the disciples, 'Let us go back to Judaea.'	7 מאחרי כן אמר לתלמידיו לכו ונשובה לארץ יהודה
8 The disciples said, 'Rabbi, it is not long since the Jews were trying to stone you; are you going backthere again?'	8 ויאמרו אליו תלמידיו רבי עתה זה בקשו היהודים לסקלך ואתה תשוב שמה
9 Jesus replied: Are there not twelve hours in the day? No one who walks in the daytime stumbles,having the light of this world to see by;	9 ויען ישוע הלא שתים עשרה שעות ליום איש כי ילך ביום לא יכשל כי יראה אור העולם הזה
10 anyone who walks around at night stumbles, having no light as a guide.	10 אבל ההלך בלילה יכשל כי האור אין בו
11 He said that and then added, 'Our friend Lazarus is at rest; I am going to wake him.'	11 כזאת דבר ואחרי כן אמר אליהם לעזר ידידנו ישן הוא ואנכי הלך למען אעירנו
12 The disciples said to him, 'Lord, if he is at rest he wil be saved.'	12 ויאמרו תלמידיו אדני אם ישן הוא יושע
13 Jesus was speaking of the death of Lazarus, but they thought that by 'rest' he meant 'sleep';	13 וישוע דבר על מותו והמה חשבו כי על מנוחת השנה דבר
14 so Jesus put it plainly, 'Lazarus is dead;	14 אז גלה ישוע את אזנם ויאמר אליהם לעזר מת
15 and for your sake I am glad I was not there because now you will believe. But let us go to him.'	15 ושמח אני בגללכם כי לא הייתי שם למען תאמינו ועתה נסעה ונלכה אליו
16 Then Thomas -- known as the Twin -- said to the other disciples, 'Let us also go to die with him.'	16 ויאמר תומא הנקרא דידומוס אל התלמידים חבריו נלכה גם אנחנו למען נמות עמו
17 On arriving, Jesus found that Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days already.	17 ויבא ישוע וימצאהו זה ארבעה ימים שכב בקבר
18 Bethany is only about two miles from Jerusalem,	18 ובית היני היה קרוב לירושלים כדרך חמש עשרה ריס
19 and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them about their brother.	19 ורבים מן היהודים באו בית מרתא ומרים לנחם אתהן על אחיהן
20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming she went to meet him. Mary remained sitting in thehouse.	20 ויהי כשמע מרתא כי ישוע בא ותצא לקרתו ומרים יושבת בבית
21 Martha said to Jesus, 'Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died,	21 ותאמר מרתא אל ישוע אדני אלו היית פה כי אז לא מת אחי
22 but even now I know that God will grant whatever you ask of him.'	22 וגם עתה ידעתי כי כל אשר תשאל מאת אלהים יתן לך אלהים
23 Jesus said to her, 'Your brother wil rise again.'	23 ויאמר אליה ישוע קום יקום אחיך
24 Martha said, 'I know he wil rise again at the resurrection on the last day.'	24 ותאמר אליו מרתא ידעתי כי יקום בתקומה ביום האחרון
25 Jesus said: I am the resurrection. Anyone who believes in me, even though that person dies, wil live,	25 ויאמר אליה ישוע אנכי התקומה והחיים המאמין בי יחיה גם כי ימות
26 and whoever lives and believes in me wil never die. Do you believe this?	26 וכל החי אשר יאמין בי לא ימות לעולם התאמיני זאת
27 'Yes, Lord,' she said, 'I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who was to come intothis world.'	27 ותאמר אליו כן אדני האמנתי כי אתה המשיח בן האלהים הבא לעולם
28 When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in a low voice, 'The Master ishere and wants to see you.'	28 ויהי אחר דברה זאת ותלך ותקרא למרים אחותה בסתר לאמר הנה המורה פה וקרא לך
29 Hearing this, Mary got up quickly and went to him.	29 היא שמעה ותמהר לקום ותבא אליו
30 Jesus had not yet come into the vil age; he was still at the place where Martha had met him.	30 וישוע טרם יבא אל הכפר כי עודנו עמד במקום אשר פגשתו שם מרתא
31 When the Jews who were in the house comforting Mary saw her get up so quickly and go out, theyfol owed her, thinking that she was going to the tomb to weep there.	31 והיהודים אשר באו אל ביתה לנחמה כראותם את מרים כי קמה פתאם ותצא הלכו אחריה באמרם כי הלכה לה אל הקבר לבכות שמה
32 Mary went to Jesus, and as soon as she saw him she threw herself at his feet, saying, 'Lord, if youhad been here, my brother would not have died.'	32 ותבא מרים אל המקום אשר ישוע עמד שם ותרא אתו ותפל לרגליו ותאמר לו אדני אלו היית פה כי אז לא מת אחי
33 At the sight of her tears, and those of the Jews who had come with her, Jesus was greatly distressed,and with a profound sigh he said,	33 ויהי כראות ישוע אתה בכיה וגם היהודים אשר באו אתה בכים ותזעם רוחו ויהי מרעיד
34 'Where have you put him?' They said, 'Lord, come and see.'	34 ויאמר איפה שמתם אתו ויאמרו אליו אדני בא וראה
35 Jesus wept;	35 ויבך ישוע
36 and the Jews said, 'See how much he loved him!'	36 ויאמרו היהודים הנה מה גדלה אהבתו אתו
37 But there were some who remarked, 'He opened the eyes of the blind man. Could he not haveprevented this man's death?'	37 ומקצתם אמרו הפקח עיני העור הלא יכל לעשות שגם זה לא ימות
38 Sighing again, Jesus reached the tomb: it was a cave with a stone to close the opening.	38 ויוסף עוד ישוע להזעם ברוחו ויבא אל הקבר והוא מערה ואבן על מבואה
39 Jesus said, 'Take the stone away.' Martha, the dead man's sister, said to him, 'Lord, by now he willsmel ; this is the fourth day since he died.'	39 ויאמר ישוע שאו את האבן מעליה ותאמר אליו מרתא אחות המת אדני הנה כבר באש כי ארבעה ימים לו
40 Jesus replied, 'Have I not told you that if you believe you wil see the glory of God?'	40 ויאמר אליה ישוע הלא אמרתי לך כי אם תאמיני תחזי את כבוד האלהים
41 So they took the stone away. Then Jesus lifted up his eyes and said: Father, I thank you for hearingmy prayer.	41 וישאו את האבן אשר המת הושם שם וישוע נשא את עיניו למרום ויאמר אודך אבי כי עניתני
42 I myself knew that you hear me always, but I speak for the sake of all these who are standing aroundme, so that they may believe it was you who sent me.	42 ואני ידעתי כי בכל עת תענני אולם בעבור העם הזה אשר סביבותי דברתי למען יאמינו בי כי אתה שלחתני
43 When he had said this, he cried in a loud voice, 'Lazarus, come out!'	43 ויהי ככלותו לדבר ויקרא בקול גדול לעזר קום צא
44 The dead man came out, his feet and hands bound with strips of material, and a cloth over his face.Jesus said to them, 'Unbind him, let him go free.'	44 ויצא המת וידיו ורגליו כרוכת בתכריכין ופיו לוטים בסודר ויאמר אליהם ישוע התירו אתו וילך לדרכו
45 Many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary, and had seen what he did, believed in him,	45 ורבים מן היהודים אשר באו אל מרים בראותם את אשר עשה ישוע האמינו בו
46 but some of them went to the Pharisees to tel them what Jesus had done.	46 ומקצתם הלכו אל הפרושים ויגידו להם את אשר עשה ישוע
47 Then the chief priests and Pharisees cal ed a meeting. 'Here is this man working al these signs,' theysaid, 'and what action are we taking?	47 אז יקהילו הכהנים הגדולים והפרושים את הסנהדרין ויאמרו מה נעשה כי האיש הלזה עשה אתות הרבה
48 If we let him go on in this way everybody wil believe in him, and the Romans wil come and suppressthe Holy Place and our nation.'	48 אם נניח לו לעשות כלם יאמינו בו ובאו הרומיים ולקחו גם את אדמתנו וגם את עמנו
49 One of them, Caiaphas, the high priest that year, said, 'You do not seem to have grasped thesituation at al ;	49 ואחד מהם קיפא שמו והוא כהן גדול בשנה ההיא אמר אליהם הן לא תדעו מאומה
50 you fail to see that it is to your advantage that one man should die for the people, rather than that thewhole nation should perish.'	50 אף לא תתבוננו כי טוב לנו מות איש אחד בעד הגוי מאבד העם כלו
51 He did not speak in his own person, but as high priest of that year he was prophesying that Jesuswas to die for the nation-	51 וזאת לא דבר מלבו כי אם בהיותו כהן גדול בשנה ההיא נבא כי ישוע ימות בעד העם
52 and not for the nation only, but also to gather together into one the scattered children of God.	52 ולא בעד העם לבד כי אם לקבץ גם את בני אלהים המפזרים והיו לאחדים
53 From that day onwards they were determined to kill him.	53 ויועצו יחדו להמיתו מהיום ההוא והלאה
54 So Jesus no longer went about openly among the Jews, but left the district for a town cal ed Ephraim,in the country bordering on the desert, and stayed there with his disciples.	54 על כן לא התהלך ישוע עוד בתוך היהודים בגלוי כי אם סר משם לארץ הקרובה אל המדבר אל עיר עפרים ויגר שם עם תלמידיו
55 The Jewish Passover was drawing near, and many of the country people who had gone up toJerusalem before the Passover to purify themselves	55 ויקרבו ימי הפסח ליהודים ועם רב עלו מן הארץ ירושלימה לפני הפסח למען יטהרו
56 were looking out for Jesus, saying to one another as they stood about in the Temple, 'What do youthink? Will he come to the festival or not?'	56 ויבקשו את ישוע ובעמדם בבית המקדש נדברו לאמר מה תחשבו הכי לא יבוא אל החג
57 The chief priests and Pharisees had by now given their orders: anyone who knew where he was mustinform them so that they could arrest him.	57 והכהנים הגדולים והפרושים גזרו גזרה אשר אם ידע איש את מקומו יודיענו למען יתפשהו
