1 There was a man named Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister, Martha, and he wasil .	1 Era malato un tal Lazzaro del Borgo di Betania, patria di Maria, e di Marta sorelle.
2 It was the same Mary, the sister of the sick man Lazarus, who anointed the Lord with ointment andwiped his feet with her hair.	2 (Maria era quella, che unse con unguento il Signore, e asciugogli i piedi co' suoi capelli, il di cui fratello Lazzaro era malato).
3 The sisters sent this message to Jesus, 'Lord, the man you love is il .'	3 Mandarono dunque a dirgli le sorelle: Signore, ecco, che colui, che tu ami è malato.
4 On receiving the message, Jesus said, 'This sickness will not end in death, but it is for God's glory sothat through it the Son of God may be glorified.'	4 Udito questo, disse Gesù: Questa malattia non è per morte, ma per glorie di Dio, affinchè quindi sia glorificato il Figliuolo di Dio.
5 Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus,	5 Voleva bene Gesù a Marta, e Maria sua sorella, e a Lazzaro.
6 yet when he heard that he was il he stayed where he was for two more days	6 Sentito adunque che ebbe, come questi era malato, si fermò allora due dì nello stesso luogo.
7 before saying to the disciples, 'Let us go back to Judaea.'	7 Dopo di che disse a' discepoli: Andiam di nuovo nella Giudea.
8 The disciples said, 'Rabbi, it is not long since the Jews were trying to stone you; are you going backthere again?'	8 Gli dissero i discepoli: Maestro, or ora cercavano i Giudei di lapidarti, di nuovo torni in là?
9 Jesus replied: Are there not twelve hours in the day? No one who walks in the daytime stumbles,having the light of this world to see by;	9 Rispose Gesù: Non sono elleno dodici le ore del giorno? Quand'uno cammina di giorno, non inciampa, perché vede la luce di questo mondo:
10 anyone who walks around at night stumbles, having no light as a guide.	10 Quando poi uno cammina di notte, inciampa, perché non ha lume.
11 He said that and then added, 'Our friend Lazarus is at rest; I am going to wake him.'	11 Così parlò, e dopo di questo, disse loro: Il nostro amico Lazzaro dorme, ma vo a svegliarlo dal sonno.
12 The disciples said to him, 'Lord, if he is at rest he wil be saved.'	12 Dissero perciò i suoi discepoli: Signore, se dorme, sarà in salvo.
13 Jesus was speaking of the death of Lazarus, but they thought that by 'rest' he meant 'sleep';	13 Ma Gesù aveva parlato della di lui morte: ed essi avevan creduto, che parlasse del dormire di uno, che ha sonno.
14 so Jesus put it plainly, 'Lazarus is dead;	14 Allora però disse loro chiaramente Gesù: Lazzaro è morto.
15 and for your sake I am glad I was not there because now you will believe. But let us go to him.'	15 E ho piacere per ragione di voi di non essere stato là, affinchè crediate: ma andiamo a lui.
16 Then Thomas -- known as the Twin -- said to the other disciples, 'Let us also go to die with him.'	16 Disse adunque Tommaso, soprannominato Didimo, ai condiscepoli: Andiamo anche noi, e muoiamo con lui.
17 On arriving, Jesus found that Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days already.	17 Arrivato Gesù, trovollo già da quattro giorni sepolto.
18 Bethany is only about two miles from Jerusalem,	18 (Era Betania circa quindici stadj vicina a Gerusalemme).
19 and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them about their brother.	19 E molti Giudei erano venuti da Marta, e Maria per consolarle riguardo; il loro fratello.
20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming she went to meet him. Mary remained sitting in thehouse.	20 Marta però, subito che ebbe sentito, che veniva Gesù, andogli incontro: e Maria stava sedendo in casa.
21 Martha said to Jesus, 'Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died,	21 Disse adunque Marta a Gesù: Signore, se eri qui, non moriva mio fratello.
22 but even now I know that God will grant whatever you ask of him.'	22 Ma anche adesso so, che qualunque cosa chiederai a Dio, Dio te la concederà.
23 Jesus said to her, 'Your brother wil rise again.'	23 Dissele Gesù: Tuo fratello risorgerà.
24 Martha said, 'I know he wil rise again at the resurrection on the last day.'	24 Risposegli Marta: So, che risorgerà nella risurrezione in quell'ultimo giorno.
25 Jesus said: I am the resurrection. Anyone who believes in me, even though that person dies, wil live,	25 Dissele Gesù: Io sono la risurrezione, e la vita: chi in me crede, sebben sia morto, viverà.
26 and whoever lives and believes in me wil never die. Do you believe this?	26 E chiunque vive, e crede in me, non morrà in eterno. Credi tu questo?
27 'Yes, Lord,' she said, 'I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who was to come intothis world.'	27 Risposegli: Si, o Signore, io ho creduto, che tu se' il Cristo, il Figliuolo di Dio vivo, che se' venuto in questo mondo.
28 When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in a low voice, 'The Master ishere and wants to see you.'	28 E detto questo, andò, e chiamò ci nascosto Maria sua sorella, dicendole: E qui il Maestro, e ti chiama.
29 Hearing this, Mary got up quickly and went to him.	29 Ella appena udito questo, alzossi in fretta, e andò da lui:
30 Jesus had not yet come into the vil age; he was still at the place where Martha had met him.	30 Imperocché non era per anco Gesù entrato nel borgo: ma era tuttavia in quel luogo, dove Marta era andata ad incontrarlo.
31 When the Jews who were in the house comforting Mary saw her get up so quickly and go out, theyfol owed her, thinking that she was going to the tomb to weep there.	31 I Giudei perciò, che erano in casa con essa, e la racconsolavano, veduto avendo Maria alzarsi in fretta, e uscir fuori, la seguitarono, dicendo: Ella va al sepolcro per ivi piangere.
32 Mary went to Jesus, and as soon as she saw him she threw herself at his feet, saying, 'Lord, if youhad been here, my brother would not have died.'	32 Maria però, arrivata che fu, dove era Gesù, e vedutolo, gittossi a' suoi piedi, e disselli: Signore, se eri qui, non moriva mio fratello.
33 At the sight of her tears, and those of the Jews who had come with her, Jesus was greatly distressed,and with a profound sigh he said,	33 Gesù allora vedendo lei piagnente, e piagnenti i Giudei, che eran venuti con essa, fremè interiormente, e turbò se tesso,
34 'Where have you put him?' They said, 'Lord, come and see.'	34 E disse: Dove l'avete messo? Gli risposero: Signore, vieni, e vedi.
35 Jesus wept;	35 E a Gesù venner le lagrime.
36 and the Jews said, 'See how much he loved him!'	36 Disser perciò i Giudei: Vedete, com'ei lo amava.
37 But there were some who remarked, 'He opened the eyes of the blind man. Could he not haveprevented this man's death?'	37 Ma taluni di essi dissero: E non poteva costui, che apri gli occhi al cieco nato, fare ancora, che questi non morisse?
38 Sighing again, Jesus reached the tomb: it was a cave with a stone to close the opening.	38 Ma Gesù di nuovo fremendo interiormente, arrivò al sepolcro, che era una caverna, alla quale era stata soprapposta una lapida.
39 Jesus said, 'Take the stone away.' Martha, the dead man's sister, said to him, 'Lord, by now he willsmel ; this is the fourth day since he died.'	39 Disse Gesù: Togliete via la lapida. Dissegli Marta, sorella del defunto: Signore, ci puzza già, perché è di quattro giorni.
40 Jesus replied, 'Have I not told you that if you believe you wil see the glory of God?'	40 Risposele Gesù: Non ti ho io detto, che se crederai, vedrai la gloria di Dio?
41 So they took the stone away. Then Jesus lifted up his eyes and said: Father, I thank you for hearingmy prayer.	41 Levaron dunque la pietra: e Gesù alzò in alto gli occhi, e disse: Padre, rendo a te grazie, perché mi hai esaudito.
42 I myself knew that you hear me always, but I speak for the sake of all these who are standing aroundme, so that they may believe it was you who sent me.	42 Io però sapeva, che sempre mi esaudisci, ma l'ho detto per causa del popolo, che sta intorno: affinchè credano, che tu mi hai mandato.
43 When he had said this, he cried in a loud voice, 'Lazarus, come out!'	43 E detto questo, con voce sonora gridò: Lazzaro, vien fuora.
44 The dead man came out, his feet and hands bound with strips of material, and a cloth over his face.Jesus said to them, 'Unbind him, let him go free.'	44 E usci subito fuora il morto, legati con fasce i piedi, e le mani, e coperto il volto con un sudario. E Gesù disse loro: Scioglietelo, e lasciatelo andare.
45 Many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary, and had seen what he did, believed in him,	45 Molti perciò di que' Giudei, che erano accorsi da Maria, e da Marta, e avevano veduto quello, che Gesù fatto aveva, credettero in lui.
46 but some of them went to the Pharisees to tel them what Jesus had done.	46 Ma alcuni di essi andarono dai Farisei, e gli raccontarono quel, che aveva fatto Gesù.
47 Then the chief priests and Pharisees cal ed a meeting. 'Here is this man working al these signs,' theysaid, 'and what action are we taking?	47 Radunarono perciò i Pontefici, e i Farisei il consiglio, e dicevano: Che facciam noi? quest' uomo fa molti miracoli.
48 If we let him go on in this way everybody wil believe in him, and the Romans wil come and suppressthe Holy Place and our nation.'	48 Se lo lasciam fare così, tutti crederanno in lui: e verranno i Romani, e stermineranno il nostre paese, e la nazione.
49 One of them, Caiaphas, the high priest that year, said, 'You do not seem to have grasped thesituation at al ;	49 Ma uno di essi, per nome Caifa, che era in quell'anno Pontefice, disse loro: Voi non sapete nulla,
50 you fail to see that it is to your advantage that one man should die for the people, rather than that thewhole nation should perish.'	50 Né riflettete, che torna conto a noi, che un uomo muoia pel popolo, e la nazione tutta non perisca.
51 He did not speak in his own person, but as high priest of that year he was prophesying that Jesuswas to die for the nation-	51 E questo non lo disse egli di suo capo: ma essendo Pontefice di quell'anno profetò, che Gesù era per morire per la nazione.
52 and not for the nation only, but also to gather together into one the scattered children of God.	52 E non solo per la nazione, ma ancora per raunare insieme i figliuoli di Dio, che eran dispersi.
53 From that day onwards they were determined to kill him.	53 Quindi è, che da quel giorno pensarono a dargli morte.
54 So Jesus no longer went about openly among the Jews, but left the district for a town cal ed Ephraim,in the country bordering on the desert, and stayed there with his disciples.	54 Gesù adunque non più conversava in pubblico tra' Giudei, ma andò in una regione vicina al deserto, in una città chiamata Efrem, e quivi si stava co' suoi discepoli.
55 The Jewish Passover was drawing near, and many of the country people who had gone up toJerusalem before the Passover to purify themselves	55 Ed era vicina la Pasqua de' Giudei, e molti di quel paese andarono a Gerusalemme prima della Pasqua per parificarsi.
56 were looking out for Jesus, saying to one another as they stood about in the Temple, 'What do youthink? Will he come to the festival or not?'	56 Cercavano pertanto di Gesù, e dicevano tra loro, stando nel Tempio: Che ve ne pare del non esser lui venuto alla festa? E i Pontefici, e i Farisei avevano mandato un ordine, che chi sapesse, dove egli si fosse, ne desse avviso, affine di averlo nelle mani.
57 The chief priests and Pharisees had by now given their orders: anyone who knew where he was mustinform them so that they could arrest him.
