Looking up, he saw rich people putting their offerings into the treasury;1 And looking around, he saw the wealthy putting their donations into the offertory.
and he noticed a poverty-stricken widow putting in two smal coins,2 Then he also saw a certain widow, a pauper, putting in two small brass coins.
and he said, 'I tell you truly, this poor widow has put in more than any of them;3 And he said: “Truly, I say to you, that this poor widow has put in more than all the others.
for these have al put in money they could spare, but she in her poverty has put in al she had to liveon.'4 For all these, out of their abundance, have added to the gifts for God. But she, out of what she needed, has put in all that she had to live on.”
When some were talking about the Temple, remarking how it was adorned with fine stonework andvotive offerings, he said,5 And when some of them were saying, about the temple, that it was adorned with excellent stones and gifts, he said,
'Al these things you are staring at now -- the time will come when not a single stone will be left onanother; everything will be destroyed.'6 “These things that you see, the days will arrive when there will not be left behind stone upon stone, which is not thrown down.”
And they put to him this question, 'Master,' they said, 'when wil this happen, then, and what sign wilthere be that it is about to take place?'7 Then they questioned him, saying: “Teacher, when will these things be? And what will be the sign when these things will happen?”
But he said, 'Take care not to be deceived, because many wil come using my name and saying, "I amthe one" and "The time is near at hand." Refuse to join them.8 And he said: “Be cautious, lest you be seduced. For many will come in my name, saying: ‘For I am he,’ and, ‘The time has drawn near.’ And so, do not choose to go after them.
And when you hear of wars and revolutions, do not be terrified, for this is something that must happenfirst, but the end wil not come at once.'9 And when you will have heard of battles and seditions, do not be terrified. These things must happen first. But the end is not so soon.”
Then he said to them, 'Nation wil fight against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.10 Then he said to them: “People will rise up against people, and kingdom against kingdom.
There wil be great earthquakes and plagues and famines in various places; there wil be terrifyingevents and great signs from heaven.11 And there will be great earthquakes in various places, and pestilences, and famines, and terrors from heaven; and there will be great signs.
'But before all this happens, you will be seized and persecuted; you will be handed over to thesynagogues and to imprisonment, and brought before kings and governors for the sake of my name12 But before all these things, they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, handing you over to synagogues and into custody, dragging you before kings and governors, because of my name.
-and that wil be your opportunity to bear witness.13 And this will be an opportunity for you to give testimony.
Make up your minds not to prepare your defence,14 Therefore, set this in your hearts: that you should not consider in advance how you might respond.
because I myself shal give you an eloquence and a wisdom that none of your opponents wil be ableto resist or contradict.15 For I will give to you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries will not be able to resist or contradict.
You wil be betrayed even by parents and brothers, relations and friends; and some of you wil be putto death.16 And you will be handed over by your parents, and brothers, and relatives, and friends. And they will bring about the death of some of you.
You wil be hated universal y on account of my name,17 And you will be hated by all because of my name.
but not a hair of your head wil be lost.18 And yet, not a hair of your head will perish.
Your perseverance wil win you your lives.19 By your patience, you shall possess your souls.
'When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then you must realise that it wil soon be laiddesolate.20 Then, when you will have seen Jerusalem encircled by an army, know then that its desolation has drawn near.
Then those in Judaea must escape to the mountains, those inside the city must leave it, and those incountry districts must not take refuge in it.21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, and those who are in its midst withdraw, and those who are in the countryside not enter into it.
For this is the time of retribution when al that scripture says must be fulfil ed.22 For these are the days of retribution, so that all things may be fulfilled, which have been written.
Alas for those with child, or with babies at the breast, when those days come!23 Then woe to those who are pregnant or nursing in those days. For there will be great distress upon the land and great wrath upon this people.
'For great misery wil descend on the land and retribution on this people. They will fal by the edge ofthe sword and be led captive to every gentile country; and Jerusalem wil be trampled down by the gentiles untiltheir time is complete.24 And they will fall by the edge of the sword. And they will be led away as captives into all nations. And Jerusalem will be trampled by the Gentiles, until the times of the nations are fulfilled.
'There will be signs in the sun and moon and stars; on earth nations in agony, bewildered by theturmoil of the ocean and its waves;25 And there will be signs in the sun and the moon and the stars. And there will be, on earth, distress among the Gentiles, out of confusion at the roaring of the sea and of the waves:
men fainting away with terror and fear at what menaces the world, for the powers of heaven wil beshaken.26 men withering away out of fear and out of apprehension over the things that will overwhelm the whole world. For the powers of the heavens will be moved.
And then they wil see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.27 And then they will see the Son of man coming on a cloud, with great power and majesty.
When these things begin to take place, stand erect, hold your heads high, because your liberation isnear at hand.'28 But when these things begin to happen, lift up your heads and look around you, because your redemption draws near.”
And he told them a parable, 'Look at the fig tree and indeed every tree.29 And he told them a comparison: “Take notice of the fig tree and of all the trees.
As soon as you see them bud, you can see for yourselves that summer is now near.30 When presently they produce fruit from themselves, you know that summer is near.
So with you when you see these things happening: know that the kingdom of God is near.31 So you also, when you will have seen these things happen, know that the kingdom of God is near.
In truth I tell you, before this generation has passed away al wil have taken place.32 Amen I say to you, this lineage shall not pass away, until all these things happen.
Sky and earth wil pass away, but my words wil never pass away.33 Heaven and earth shall pass away. But my words shall not pass away.
'Watch yourselves, or your hearts will be coarsened by debauchery and drunkenness and the caresof life, and that day wil come upon you unexpectedly,34 But be attentive to yourselves, lest perhaps your hearts may be weighed down by self-indulgence and inebriation and the cares of this life. And then that day may overwhelm you suddenly.
like a trap. For it wil come down on all those living on the face of the earth.35 For like a snare it will overwhelm all those who sit upon the face of the entire earth.
Stay awake, praying at all times for the strength to survive all that is going to happen, and to holdyour ground before the Son of man.'36 And so, be vigilant, praying at all times, so that you may be held worthy to escape from all these things, which are in the future, and to stand before the Son of man.”
All day long he would be in the Temple teaching, but would spend the night in the open on the hilcal ed the Mount of Olives.37 Now in the daytime, he was teaching in the temple. But truly, departing in the evening, he lodged on the mount that is called Olivet.
And from early morning the people thronged to him in the Temple to listen to him.38 And all the people arrived in the morning to listen to him in the temple.
