NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
They reached the territory of the Gerasenes on the other side of the lake,1 Et venerunt trans fretum maris in regionem Gerasenorum.
and when he disembarked, a man with an unclean spirit at once came out from the tombs towards him.2 Et exeunte eode navi, statim occurrit ei de monumentis homo in spiritu immundo,
The man lived in the tombs and no one could secure him any more, even with a chain,3 quidomicilium habebat in monumentis; et neque catenis iam quisquam eum poteratligare,
because he had often been secured with fetters and chains but had snapped the chains and broken thefetters, and no one had the strength to control him.4 quoniam saepe compedibus et catenis vinctus dirupisset catenas etcompedes comminuisset, et nemo poterat eum domare;
All night and al day, among the tombs and in the mountains, he would howl and gash himself withstones.5 et semper nocte ac die inmonumentis et in montibus erat clamans et concidens se lapidibus.
Catching sight of Jesus from a distance, he ran up and fel at his feet6 Et vidensIesum a longe cucurrit et adoravit eum
and shouted at the top of his voice, 'What do you want with me, Jesus, son of the Most High God? InGod's name do not torture me!'7 et clamans voce magna dicit: “ Quidmihi et tibi, Iesu, fili Dei Altissimi? Adiuro te per Deum, ne me torqueas ”.
For Jesus had been saying to him, 'Come out of the man, unclean spirit.'8 Dicebat enim illi: “ Exi, spiritus immunde, ab homine ”.
Then he asked, 'What is your name?' He answered, 'My name is Legion, for there are many of us.'9 Et interrogabateum: “ Quod tibi nomen est? ”. Et dicit ei: “ Legio nomen mihi est, quiamulti sumus ”.
And he begged him earnestly not to send them out of the district.10 Et deprecabatur eum multum, ne se expelleret extra regionem.
Now on the mountainside there was a great herd of pigs feeding,11 Erat autem ibi circa montem grex porcorum magnus pascens;
and the unclean spirits begged him, 'Send us to the pigs, let us go into them.'12 et deprecatisunt eum dicentes: “ Mitte nos in porcos, ut in eos introeamus ”.
So he gave them leave. With that, the unclean spirits came out and went into the pigs, and the herd ofabout two thousand pigs charged down the cliff into the lake, and there they were drowned.13 Etconcessit eis. Et exeuntes spiritus immundi introierunt in porcos. Et magnoimpetu grex ruit per praecipitium in mare, ad duo milia, et suffocabantur inmari.
The men looking after them ran off and told their story in the city and in the country round about; andthe people came to see what had real y happened.14 Qui autem pascebant eos, fugerunt et nuntiaverunt in civitatem et inagros; et egressi sunt videre quid esset facti.
They came to Jesus and saw the demoniac sitting there -- the man who had had the legion in him --properly dressed and in his ful senses, and they were afraid.15 Et veniunt ad Iesum; etvident illum, qui a daemonio vexabatur, sedentem, vestitum et sanae mentis, eumqui legionem habuerat, et timuerunt.
And those who had witnessed it reported what had happened to the demoniac and what had becomeof the pigs.16 Et qui viderant, narraverunt illisqualiter factum esset ei, qui daemonium habuerat, et de porcis.
Then they began to implore Jesus to leave their neighbourhood.17 Et rogare eumcoeperunt, ut discederet a finibus eorum.
As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed begged to be al owed to stay withhim.18 Cumque ascenderet navem, quidaemonio vexatus fuerat, deprecabatur eum, ut esset cum illo.
Jesus would not let him but said to him, 'Go home to your people and tel them al that the Lord in hismercy has done for you.'19 Et non admisiteum, sed ait illi: “ Vade in domum tuam ad tuos et annuntia illis quanta tibiDominus fecerit et misertus sit tui ”.
So the man went off and proceeded to proclaim in the Decapolis al that Jesus had done for him. Andeveryone was amazed.20 Et abiit et coepit praedicare inDecapoli quanta sibi fecisset Iesus, et omnes mirabantur.
When Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered round him and hestayed by the lake.21 Et cum transcendisset Iesus in navi rursus trans fretum, convenit turba multaad illum, et erat circa mare.
Then the president of the synagogue came up, named Jairus, and seeing him, fel at his feet22 Et venit quidam de archisynagogis nomine Iairuset videns eum procidit ad pedes eius
and begged him earnestly, saying, 'My little daughter is desperately sick. Do come and lay your handson her that she may be saved and may live.'23 et deprecatur eum multum dicens: “Filiola mea in extremis est; veni, impone manus super eam, ut salva sit et vivat”.
Jesus went with him and a large crowd followed him; they were pressing al round him.24 Et abiit cum illo. Et sequebatur eum turba multa et comprimebant illum.
Now there was a woman who had suffered from a haemorrhage for twelve years;25 Et mulier, quae erat in profluvio sanguinis annis duodecim
after long and painful treatment under various doctors, she had spent al she had without being anythe better for it; in fact, she was getting worse.26 et fuerat multaperpessa a compluribus medicis et erogaverat omnia sua nec quidquam profecerat,sed magis deterius habebat,
She had heard about Jesus, and she came up through the crowd and touched his cloak from behind,thinking,27 cum audisset de Iesu, venit in turba retro ettetigit vestimentum eius;
'If I can just touch his clothes, I shal be saved.'28 dicebat enim: “ Si vel vestimenta eius tetigero,salva ero ”.
And at once the source of the bleeding dried up, and she felt in herself that she was cured of hercomplaint.29 Et confestim siccatus est fons sanguinis eius, et sensitcorpore quod sanata esset a plaga.
And at once aware of the power that had gone out from him, Jesus turned round in the crowd andsaid, 'Who touched my clothes?'30 Et statim Iesus cognoscens in semetipsovirtutem, quae exierat de eo, conversus ad turbam aiebat: “ Quis tetigitvestimenta mea? ”.
His disciples said to him, 'You see how the crowd is pressing round you; how can you ask, "Whotouched me?" '31 Et dicebant ei discipuli sui: “ Vides turbamcomprimentem te et dicis: “Quis me tetigit?” ”.
But he continued to look al round to see who had done it.32 Et circumspiciebatvidere eam, quae hoc fecerat.
Then the woman came forward, frightened and trembling because she knew what had happened toher, and she fel at his feet and told him the whole truth.33 Mulier autem timens et tremens, sciens quodfactum esset in se, venit et procidit ante eum et dixit ei omnem veritatem.
'My daughter,' he said, 'your faith has restored you to health; go in peace and be free of yourcomplaint.'34 Ille autem dixit ei: “ Filia, fides tua te salvam fecit. Vade in pace et estosana a plaga tua ”.
While he was stil speaking some people arrived from the house of the president of the synagogue tosay, 'Your daughter is dead; why put the Master to any further trouble?'35 Adhuc eo loquente, veniunt ab archisynagogo dicentes: “ Filia tua mortuaest; quid ultra vexas magistrum? ”.
But Jesus overheard what they said and he said to the president of the synagogue, 'Do not be afraid;only have faith.'36 Iesus autem, verbo, quod dicebatur,audito, ait archisynagogo: “ Noli timere; tantummodo crede! ”.
And he allowed no one to go with him except Peter and James and John the brother of James.37 Et nonadmisit quemquam sequi se nisi Petrum et Iacobum et Ioannem fratrem Iacobi.
So they came to the house of the president of the synagogue, and Jesus noticed al the commotion,with people weeping and wailing unrestrainedly.38 Et veniunt ad domum archisynagogi; et videt tumultum et flentes et eiulantesmultum,
He went in and said to them, 'Why all this commotion and crying? The child is not dead, but asleep.'39 et ingressus ait eis: “ Quid turbamini et ploratis? Puella non estmortua, sed dormit ”.
But they ridiculed him. So he turned them al out and, taking with him the child's father and mother andhis own companions, he went into the place where the child lay.40 Et irridebant eum. Ipse vero, eiectis omnibus,assumit patrem puellae et matrem et, qui secum erant, et ingreditur, ubi eratpuella;
And taking the child by the hand he said to her, 'Talitha kum!' which means, 'Little girl, I tel you to getup.'41 et tenens manum puellae ait illi: “ Talitha, qum! ” — quod estinterpretatum: “ Puella, tibi dico: Surge! ” - .
The little girl got up at once and began to walk about, for she was twelve years old. At once they wereovercome with astonishment,42 Et confestim surrexitpuella et ambulabat; erat enim annorum duodecim. Et obstupuerunt continuostupore magno.
and he gave them strict orders not to let anyone know about it, and told them to give her something toeat.43 Et praecepit illis vehementer, ut nemo id sciret, et dixitdari illi manducare.
