NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
Another time he went into the synagogue, and there was a man present whose hand was withered.1 Et introivit iterum in synagogam : et erat ibi homo habens manum aridam.
And they were watching him to see if he would cure him on the Sabbath day, hoping for something tocharge him with.2 Et observabant eum, si sabbatis curaret, ut accusarent illum.
He said to the man with the withered hand, 'Get up and stand in the middle!'3 Et ait homini habenti manum aridam : Surge in medium.
Then he said to them, 'Is it permitted on the Sabbath day to do good, or to do evil; to save life, or to kil ?'But they said nothing.4 Et dicit eis : Licet sabbatis benefacere, an male ? animam salvam facere, an perdere ? At illi tacebant.
Then he looked angrily round at them, grieved to find them so obstinate, and said to the man, 'Stretchout your hand.' He stretched it out and his hand was restored.5 Et circumspiciens eos cum ira, contristatus super cæcitate cordis eorum, dicit homini : Extende manum tuam. Et extendit, et restituta est manus illi.
The Pharisees went out and began at once to plot with the Herodians against him, discussing how todestroy him.6 Exeuntes autem pharisæi, statim cum Herodianis consilium faciebant adversus eum quomodo eum perderent.
Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the lakeside, and great crowds from Galilee fol owed him. FromJudaea,7 Jesus autem cum discipulis suis secessit ad mare : et multa turba a Galilæa et Judæa secuta est eum,
and from Jerusalem, and from Idumaea and Transjordan and the region of Tyre and Sidon, greatnumbers who had heard of al he was doing came to him.8 et ab Jerosolymis, et ab Idumæa, et trans Jordanem : et qui circa Tyrum et Sidonem multitudo magna, audientes quæ faciebat, venerunt ad eum.
And he asked his disciples to have a boat ready for him because of the crowd, to keep him from beingcrushed.9 Et dicit discipulis suis ut navicula sibi deserviret propter turbam, ne comprimerent eum :
For he had cured so many that al who were afflicted in any way were crowding forward to touch him.10 multos enim sanabat, ita ut irruerent in eum ut illum tangerent, quotquot habebant plagas.
And the unclean spirits, whenever they saw him, would fal down before him and shout, 'You are theSon of God!'11 Et spiritus immundi, cum illum videbant, procidebant ei : et clamabant, dicentes :
But he warned them strongly not to make him known.12 Tu es Filius Dei. Et vehementer comminabatur eis ne manifestarent illum.
He now went up onto the mountain and summoned those he wanted. So they came to him13 Et ascendens in montem vocavit ad se quos voluit ipse : et venerunt ad eum.
and he appointed twelve; they were to be his companions and to be sent out to proclaim the message,14 Et fecit ut essent duodecim cum illo : et ut mitteret eos prædicare.
with power to drive out devils.15 Et dedit illis potestatem curandi infirmitates et ejiciendi dæmonia.
And so he appointed the Twelve, Simon to whom he gave the name Peter,16 Et imposuit Simoni nomen Petrus :
James the son of Zebedee and John the brother of James, to whom he gave the name Boanerges or'Sons of Thunder';17 et Jacobum Zebedæi, et Joannem fratrem Jacobi, et imposuit eis nomina Boanerges, quod est, Filii tonitrui :
Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon theZealot18 et Andream, et Philippum, et Bartholomæum, et Matthæum, et Thomam, et Jacobum Alphæi, et Thaddæum, et Simonem Cananæum,
and Judas Iscariot, the man who was to betray him.19 et Judam Iscariotem, qui et tradidit illum.
He went home again, and once more such a crowd col ected that they could not even have a meal.20 Et veniunt ad domum : et convenit iterum turba, ita ut non possent neque panem manducare.
When his relations heard of this, they set out to take charge of him; they said, 'He is out of his mind.'21 Et cum audissent sui, exierunt tenere eum : dicebant enim : Quoniam in furorem versus est.
The scribes who had come down from Jerusalem were saying, 'Beelzebul is in him,' and, 'It is throughthe prince of devils that he drives devils out.'22 Et scribæ, qui ab Jerosolymis descenderant, dicebant : Quoniam Beelzebub habet, et quia in principe dæmoniorum ejicit dæmonia.
So he cal ed them to him and spoke to them in parables,23 Et convocatis eis in parabolis dicebat illis : Quomodo potest Satanas Satanam ejicere ?
'How can Satan drive out Satan? If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot last.24 Et si regnum in se dividatur, non potest regnum illud stare.
And if a household is divided against itself, that household can never last.25 Et si domus super semetipsam dispertiatur, non potest domus illa stare.
Now if Satan has rebel ed against himself and is divided, he cannot last either -- it is the end of him.26 Et si Satanas consurrexerit in semetipsum, dispertitus est, et non poterit stare, sed finem habet.
But no one can make his way into a strong man's house and plunder his property unless he has firsttied up the strong man. Only then can he plunder his house.27 Nemo potest vasa fortis ingressus in domum diripere, nisi prius fortem alliget, et tunc domum ejus diripiet.
'In truth I tel you, al human sins will be forgiven, and al the blasphemies ever uttered;28 Amen dico vobis, quoniam omnia dimittentur filiis hominum peccata, et blasphemiæ quibus blasphemaverint :
but anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven, but is guilty of an eternalsin.'29 qui autem blasphemaverit in Spiritum Sanctum, non habebit remissionem in æternum, sed reus erit æterni delicti.
This was because they were saying, 'There is an unclean spirit in him.'30 Quoniam dicebant : Spiritum immundum habet.
Now his mother and his brothers arrived and, standing outside, sent in a message asking for him.31 Et veniunt mater ejus et fratres : et foris stantes miserunt ad eum vocantes eum,
A crowd was sitting round him at the time the message was passed to him, 'Look, your mother andbrothers and sisters are outside asking for you.'32 et sedebat circa eum turba : et dicunt ei : Ecce mater tua et fratres tui foris quærunt te.
He replied, 'Who are my mother and my brothers?'33 Et respondens eis, ait : Quæ est mater mea et fratres mei ?
And looking at those sitting in a circle round him, he said, 'Here are my mother and my brothers.34 Et circumspiciens eos, qui in circuitu ejus sedebant, ait : Ecce mater mea et fratres mei.
Anyone who does the wil of God, that person is my brother and sister and mother.'35 Qui enim fecerit voluntatem Dei, hic frater meus, et soror mea, et mater est.
