NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
Another time he went into the synagogue, and there was a man present whose hand was withered.1 Et introivit iterum in synago gam. Et erat ibi homo habens manum aridam;
And they were watching him to see if he would cure him on the Sabbath day, hoping for something tocharge him with.2 et observabant eum, si sabbatis curaret illum, ut accusarent eum.
He said to the man with the withered hand, 'Get up and stand in the middle!'3 Et aithomini habenti manum aridam: “ Surge in medium ”.
Then he said to them, 'Is it permitted on the Sabbath day to do good, or to do evil; to save life, or to kil ?'But they said nothing.4 Et dicit eis: “ Licetsabbatis bene facere an male? Animam salvam facere an perdere? ”. At illitacebant.
Then he looked angrily round at them, grieved to find them so obstinate, and said to the man, 'Stretchout your hand.' He stretched it out and his hand was restored.5 Et circumspiciens eos cum ira, contristatus super caecitate cordiseorum, dicit homini: “ Extende manum ”. Et extendit, et restituta est manuseius.
The Pharisees went out and began at once to plot with the Herodians against him, discussing how todestroy him.6 Et exeuntes pharisaei statim cum herodianis consilium faciebant adversuseum quomodo eum perderent.
Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the lakeside, and great crowds from Galilee fol owed him. FromJudaea,7 Et Iesus cum discipulis suis secessit ad mare. Et multa turba a Galilaeasecuta est et a Iudaea
and from Jerusalem, and from Idumaea and Transjordan and the region of Tyre and Sidon, greatnumbers who had heard of al he was doing came to him.8 et ab Hierosolymis et ab Idumaea; et, qui transIordanem et circa Tyrum et Sidonem, multitudo magna, audientes, quae faciebat,venerunt ad eum.
And he asked his disciples to have a boat ready for him because of the crowd, to keep him from beingcrushed.9 Et dixit discipulis suis, ut navicula sibi praesto essetpropter turbam, ne comprimerent eum.
For he had cured so many that al who were afflicted in any way were crowding forward to touch him.10 Multos enim sanavit, ita ut irruerent in eum, ut illum tangerent, quotquothabebant plagas.
And the unclean spirits, whenever they saw him, would fal down before him and shout, 'You are theSon of God!'11 Et spiritus immundi, cum illum videbant, procidebant ei etclamabant dicentes: “ Tu es Filius Dei! ”.
But he warned them strongly not to make him known.12 Et vehementer comminabatureis, ne manifestarent illum.
He now went up onto the mountain and summoned those he wanted. So they came to him13 Et ascendit in montem et vocat ad se, quos voluit ipse, et venerunt ad eum.
and he appointed twelve; they were to be his companions and to be sent out to proclaim the message,14 Et fecit Duodecim, ut essent cum illo, et ut mitteret eos praedicare
with power to drive out devils.15 habentes potestatem eiciendi daemonia:
And so he appointed the Twelve, Simon to whom he gave the name Peter,16 et imposuit Simoni nomen Petrum;
James the son of Zebedee and John the brother of James, to whom he gave the name Boanerges or'Sons of Thunder';17 etIacobum Zebedaei et Ioannem fratrem Iacobi, et imposuit eis nomina Boanerges,quod est Filii tonitrui;
Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon theZealot18 et Andream et Philippum et Bartholomaeum etMatthaeum et Thomam et Iacobum Alphaei et Thaddaeum et Simonem Chananaeum
and Judas Iscariot, the man who was to betray him.19 etIudam Iscarioth, qui et tradidit illum.
He went home again, and once more such a crowd col ected that they could not even have a meal.20 Et venit ad domum; et convenit iterum turba, ita ut non possent neque panemmanducare.
When his relations heard of this, they set out to take charge of him; they said, 'He is out of his mind.'21 Et cum audissent sui, exierunt tenere eum; dicebant enim: “ Infurorem versus est ”.
The scribes who had come down from Jerusalem were saying, 'Beelzebul is in him,' and, 'It is throughthe prince of devils that he drives devils out.'22 Et scribae, qui ab Hierosolymis descenderant, dicebant: “ Beelzebul habet” et: “ In principe daemonum eicit daemonia ”.
So he cal ed them to him and spoke to them in parables,23 Et convocatis eis, inparabolis dicebat illis: “ Quomodo potest Satanas Satanam eicere?
'How can Satan drive out Satan? If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot last.24 Et siregnum in se dividatur, non potest stare regnum illud;
And if a household is divided against itself, that household can never last.25 et si domus insemetipsam dispertiatur, non poterit domus illa stare.
Now if Satan has rebel ed against himself and is divided, he cannot last either -- it is the end of him.26 Et si Satanasconsurrexit in semetipsum et dispertitus est, non potest stare, sed finem habet.
But no one can make his way into a strong man's house and plunder his property unless he has firsttied up the strong man. Only then can he plunder his house.27 Nemo autem potest in domum fortis ingressus vasa eius diripere, nisi priusfortem alliget; et tunc domum eius diripiet.
'In truth I tel you, al human sins will be forgiven, and al the blasphemies ever uttered;28 Amen dico vobis: Omniadimittentur filiis hominum peccata et blasphemiae, quibus blasphemaverint;
but anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven, but is guilty of an eternalsin.'29 qui autem blasphemaverit in Spiritum Sanctum, non habet remissionem in aeternum,sed reus est aeterni delicti ”.
This was because they were saying, 'There is an unclean spirit in him.'30 Quoniam dicebant: “ Spiritum immundumhabet ”.
Now his mother and his brothers arrived and, standing outside, sent in a message asking for him.31 Et venit mater eius et fratres eius, et foris stantes miserunt ad eumvocantes eum.
A crowd was sitting round him at the time the message was passed to him, 'Look, your mother andbrothers and sisters are outside asking for you.'32 Et sedebat circa eum turba, et dicunt ei: “ Ecce mater tua etfratres tui et sorores tuae foris quaerunt te ”.
He replied, 'Who are my mother and my brothers?'33 Et respondens eis ait: “Quae est mater mea et fratres mei? ”.
And looking at those sitting in a circle round him, he said, 'Here are my mother and my brothers.34 Et circumspiciens eos, qui incircuitu eius sedebant, ait: “ Ecce mater mea et fratres mei.
Anyone who does the wil of God, that person is my brother and sister and mother.'35 Qui enimfecerit voluntatem Dei, hic frater meus et soror mea et mater est ”.
