When the Sabbath was over, Mary of Magdala, Mary the mother of James, and Salome, bought spiceswith which to go and anoint him.1 וַיְהִי כַּאֲשֶׁר עָבַר יוֹם הַשַּׁבָּת וַתִּקְנֶינָה מִרְיָם הַמַּגְדָּלִית וּמִרְיָם אֵם יַעֲקֹב וּשְׁלֹמִית בְּשָׂמִּים לָבוֹא וְלָסוּךְ אֹתוֹ בָּהֶם
And very early in the morning on the first day of the week they went to the tomb when the sun hadrisen.2
They had been saying to one another, 'Who wil rol away the stone for us from the entrance to thetomb?'3
But when they looked they saw that the stone -- which was very big -- had already been rol ed back.4 וּבְהַבִּיטָן רָאוּ וְהִנֵּה נִגְלְלָה הָאָבֶן כִּי הָיְתָה גְּדֹלָה מְאֹד
On entering the tomb they saw a young man in a white robe seated on the right-hand side, and theywere struck with amazement.5 וַתָּבֹאנָה אֶל־תּוֹךְ הַקָּבֶר וַתִּרְאֶינָה בָּחוּר אֶחָד ישֵׁב מִיָּמִין וְהוּא עוֹטֶה שִׂמְלָה לְבָנָה וַתִּשְׁתּוֹמַמְנָה
But he said to them, 'There is no need to be so amazed. You are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, whowas crucified: he has risen, he is not here. See, here is the place where they laid him.6 וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶן אַל־תִּשְׁתּוֹמַמְנָה אֶת־יֵשׁוּעַ הַנָּצְרִי אַתֶּן מְבַקְשׁוֹת אֵת הַנִּצְלָב הוּא קָם אֵינֶנּוּ פֹה הִנֵּה־זֶה הַמָּקוֹם אֲשֶׁר הִשְׁכִּיבֻהוּ בוֹ
But you must go and tel his disciples and Peter, "He is going ahead of you to Galilee; that is where you wil see him, just as he told you." '7 אַךְ־לֵכְנָה וַאֲמַרְתֶּן אֶל־תַּלְמִידָיו וְאֶל־פֶּטְרוֹס כִּי הוֹלֵךְ הוּא לִפְנֵיכֶם הַגָּלִילָה וְשָׁם תִּרְאֻהוּ כַּאֲשֶׁר אָמַר לָכֶם
And the women came out and ran away from the tomb because they were frightened out of their wits;and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.8 וַתְּמַהֵרְנָה לָצֵאת וַתִּבְרַחְנָה מִן־הַקֶּבֶר כִּי אֲחָזָתַן רְעָדָה וְתִמָּהוֹן וְלֹא־הִגִּידוּ דָבָר לְאִישׁ כִּי יָרֵאוּ
Having risen in the morning on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary of Magdala fromwhom he had cast out seven devils.9 וְהוּא כַּאֲשֶׁר קָם מִן־הַמֵּתִים בְּאֶחָד בַּשַּׁבָּת נִרְאָה בָרִאשֹׁנָה אֶל־מִרְיָם הַמַּגְדָּלִית אֲשֶׁר גֵּרַשׁ מִמֶּנָּה שִׁבְעָה שֵׁדִים
She then went to those who had been his companions, and who were mourning and in tears, andtold them.10 וַתֵּלֶךְ וַתַּגֵּד לָאֲנָשִׁים אֲשֶׁר הָיוּ עִמּוֹ וְהֵם מִתְאַבְּלִים וּבֹכִים
But they did not believe her when they heard her say that he was alive and that she had seen him.11 וְכַאֲשֶׁר שָׁמְעוּ כִּי חַי וְנִרְאָה אֵלֶיהָ לֹא הֶאֱמִינוּ לָהּ
After this, he showed himself under another form to two of them as they were on their way into thecountry.12 וְאַחֲרֵי־כֵן נִרְאָה בִּדְמוּת אַחֶרֶת לִשְׁנַיִם מֵהֶם בִּהְיֹתָם מִתְהַלְּכִים בְּצֵאתָם הַשָּׂדֶה
These went back and told the others, who did not believe them either.13
Lastly, he showed himself to the Eleven themselves while they were at table. He reproached them fortheir incredulity and obstinacy, because they had refused to believe those who had seen him after he had risen.14 וּבָאַחֲרֹנָה נִרְאָה לְאַחַד הֶעָשָׂר בִּהְיוֹתָם מְסֻבִּים וַיְחָרֵף חֶסְרוֹן אֱמוּנָתָם וּקְשִׁי לְבָבָם אֲשֶׁר לֹא־הֶאֱמִינוּ לָרֹאִים אֹתוֹ נֵעוֹר מִן־הַמֵּתִים
And he said to them, 'Go out to the whole world; proclaim the gospel to al creation.15
Whoever believes and is baptised wil be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned.16
These are the signs that will be associated with believers: in my name they wil cast out devils; theywil have the gift of tongues;17 וְאֵלֶּה הָאֹתוֹת אֲשֶׁר יִלָּווּ אֶל־הַמַּאֲמִינִים יְגָרְשׁוּ שֵׁדִים בִּשְׁמִי וּבִלְשֹׁנוֹת חֲדָשׁוֹת יְדַבֵּרוּ
they wil pick up snakes in their hands and be unharmed should they drink deadly poison; they wil laytheir hands on the sick, who wil recover.'18 נְחָשִׁים יִשְׂאוּ בִּידֵיהֶם וְאִם־יִשְׁתּוּ סַם־הַמָּוֶת לֹא יַזִּיקֵם עַל־חוֹלִים יָשִׂימוּ אֶת־יְדֵיהֶם וְיִיטַב לָהֶם
And so the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven; there at the righthand of God he took his place,19 וַיְהִי אַחֲרֵי אֲשֶׁר־דִּבֶּר אִתָּם הָאָדוֹן וַיִּנָּשֵׂא הַשָּׁמָיְמָה וַיֵּשֶׁב לִימִין הָאֱלֹהִים
while they, going out, preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word bythe signs that accompanied it.20 וְהֵמָּה יָצְאוּ וַיִּקְרְאוּ אֶת־הַבְּשׂוֹרָה בְּכָל־הַמְּקֹמוֹת וְהָאָדוֹן עֲזָרָם וַיְחַזֵּק אֶת־הַדָּבָר בָּאֹתוֹת הַבָּאוֹת אַחֲרֵי דְבָרָם אָמֵן
