'Now the kingdom of Heaven is like a landowner going out at daybreak to hire workers for his vineyard.1 כִּי דוֹמָה מַלְכוּת הַשָּׁמַיִם לְאָדָם בַּעַל־בָּיִת אֲשֶׁר הִשְׁכִּים לָצֵאת בַּבֹּקֶר לִשְׂכֹּר פֹּעֲלִים לְכַרְמוֹ
He made an agreement with the workers for one denarius a day and sent them to his vineyard.2 וְהִתְנָה עִם־הַפֹּעֲלִים שְׂכַר דִּינָר לַיּוֹם וַיִּשְׁלָחֵם אֶל־כַּרְמוֹ
Going out at about the third hour he saw others standing idle in the market place3 וַיֵּצֵא בַּשָּׁעָה הַשְּׁלִישִׁית וַיַּרְא אֲחֵרִים עֹמְדִים בְּטֵלִים בַּשּׁוּק
and said to them, "You go to my vineyard too and I wil give you a fair wage."4 וַיֹּאמֶר לָהֶם לְכוּ גַם־אַתֶּם אֶל־כַּרְמִי וְכַיּשֶׁר אֶתֵּן לָכֶם וַיֵּלֵכוּ
So they went. At about the sixth hour and again at about the ninth hour, he went out and did the same.5 וַיֵּצֵא גַּם בַּשָּׁעָה הַשִּׁשִּׁית גַּם בַּתְּשִׁיעִית וַיַּעַשׂ כַּדָּבָר הַזֶּה
Then at about the eleventh hour he went out and found more men standing around, and he said tothem, "Why have you been standing here idle all day?"6 וַיֵּצֵא בִּשְׁעַת אַחַת עֶשְׂרֵה וַיִּמְצָא אֲחֵרִים עֹמְדִים וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם לָמָה אַתֶּם עֹמְדִים פֹּה בְּטֵלִים כָּל־הַיּוֹם
"Because no one has hired us," they answered. He said to them, "You go into my vineyard too."7 וַיֹּאמְרוּ לוֹ כִּי לֹא־שָׂכַר אוֹתָנוּ אִישׁ וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם לְכוּ גַם־אַתֶּם אֶל־הַכֶּרֶם וְכַיּשֶׁר יֻתַּן לָכֶם
In the evening, the owner of the vineyard said to his bailiff, "Call the workers and pay them theirwages, starting with the last arrivals and ending with the first."8 וַיְהִי בָעֶרֶב וַיֹּאמֶר בַּעַל הַכֶּרֶם אֶל־פְּקִידוֹ קְרָא אֶת־הַפֹּעֲלִים וְשַׁלֵּם לָהֶם אֶת־שְׂכָרָם הָחֵל בָּאַחֲרוֹנִים וְכַלֵּה בָּרִאשׁוֹנִים
So those who were hired at about the eleventh hour came forward and received one denarius each.9 וַיָּבֹאוּ הַנִּשְׂכָּרִים בִּשְׁעַת אַחַת עֶשְׂרֵה וַיִּקְחוּ אִישׁ אִישׁ דִּינָר אֶחָד
When the first came, they expected to get more, but they too received one denarius each.10 וּבְבֹא הָרִאשׁוֹנִים דִּמּוּ בְנַפְשָׁם כִּי יִקְחוּ יוֹתֵר וַיִּקְחוּ גַּם־הֵם אִישׁ אִישׁ דִּינָר אֶחָד
They took it, but grumbled at the landowner saying,11 וַיְהִי בְקַחְתָּם וַיִּלּוֹנוּ עַל־בַּעַל הַבַּיִת לֵאמֹר
"The men who came last have done only one hour, and you have treated them the same as us,though we have done a heavy day's work in al the heat."12 אֵלֶּה הָאַחֲרוֹנִים לֹא עָשֹוּ כִּי אִם־שָׁעָה אֶחָת וְאַתָּה הִשְׁוִיתָם אֵלֵינוּ אֲשֶׁר סָבַלְנוּ אֶת־כֹּבֶד הַיּוֹם וְאֶת־חֻמּוֹ
He answered one of them and said, "My friend, I am not being unjust to you; did we not agree on onedenarius?13 וַיַּעַן וַיֹּאמֶר אֶל־אֶחָד מֵהֶם רֵעִי לֹא עֲשַׁקְתִּיךָ הֲלֹא שְׂכַר דִּינָר הִתְנֵיתָ עִמִּי
Take your earnings and go. I choose to pay the lastcomer as much as I pay you.14 קַח אֶת־שֶׁלְּךָ וָלֵךְ וַאֲנִי רְצוֹנִי לָתֵת גַּם־לָזֶה הָאַחֲרוֹן כְּמוֹ־לָךְ
Have I no right to do what I like with my own? Why should you be envious because I am generous?"15 הֲלֹא אוּכַל לַעֲשׂוֹת בְּשֶׁלִּי כִּרְצוֹנִי הַאִם־תֵּרַע עֵינְךָ עַל־אֲשֶׁר טוֹב אָנֹכִי
Thus the last wil be first, and the first, last.'16 כָּכָה יִהְיוּ הָאַחֲרוֹנִים רִאשׁוֹנִים וְהָרִאשׁוֹנִים יִהְיוּ אַחֲרוֹנִים כִּי־רַבִּים הֵם הַקְּרוּאִים וּמְעַטִּים הַנִּבְחָרִים
Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, and on the road he took the Twelve aside by themselves and saidto them,17 וַיְהִי כַּעֲלוֹת יֵשׁוּעַ יְרוּשָׁלַיִם וַיִּקַּח אֵלָיו אֶת־שְׁנֵים הֶעָשָׂר לְבַדָּם וַיֹּאמֶר לָהֶם בַּדָּרֶךְ
'Look, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of man is about to be handed over to the chiefpriests and scribes. They wil condemn him to death18 הִנְנוּ עֹלִים יְרוּשָׁלָיְמָה וּבֶן־הָאָדָם יִמָּסֵר לְרָאשֵׁי הַכֹּהֲנִים וְלַסּוֹפְרִים וְהִרְשִׁיעֻהוּ לָמוּת
and will hand him over to the gentiles to be mocked and scourged and crucified; and on the third dayhe wil be raised up again.'19 וּמָסְרוּ אוֹתוֹ לַגּוֹיִם לְהָתֵל בּוֹ וּלְהַכּוֹת אוֹתוֹ בַּשּׁוֹטִים וְלִצְלֹב אוֹתוֹ וּבַיּוֹם הַשְּׁלִישִׁי קוֹם יָקוּם
Then the mother of Zebedee's sons came with her sons to make a request of him, and bowed low;20
and he said to her, 'What is it you want?' She said to him, 'Promise that these two sons of mine maysit one at your right hand and the other at your left in your kingdom.'21 וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלֶיהָ מַה־בַּקָּשָׁתֵךְ וַתֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו אֱמָר־נָא כִּי יֵשְׁבוּ שְׁנֵי־בָנַי אֵלֶּה אֶחָד לִימִינְךָ וְאֶחָד לִשְׂמֹאלְךָ בְּמַלְכוּתֶךָ
Jesus answered, 'You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I am going todrink?' They replied, 'We can.'22 וַיַּעַן יֵשׁוּעַ וַיֹּאמֶר לֹא יְדַעְתֶּם אֵת אֲשֶׁר שְׁאֶלְתֶּם הֲיָכֹל תּוּכְלוּ שְׁתוֹת אֶת־הַכּוֹס אֲשֶׁר אֲנִי עָתִיד לִשְׁתּוֹתָהּ וְהִטָּבֵל בַּטְּבִילָה אֲשֶׁר אֲנִי נִטְבָּל בָּהּ וַיֹּאמְרוּ אֵלָיו נוּכָל
He said to them, 'Very wel ; you shal drink my cup, but as for seats at my right hand and my left,these are not mine to grant; they belong to those to whom they have been al otted by my Father.'23 וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם הֵן אֶת־כּוֹסִי תִשְׁתּוּ וּבַטְּבִילָה אֲשֶׁר אֲנִי נִטְבָּל בָּהּ תִּטָּבֵלוּ אַךְ שֶׁבֶת לִימִינִי וְלִשְׂמֹאלִי אֵין בְּיָדִי לְתִתָּהּ בִּלְתִּי לַאֲשֶׁר הוּכַן לָהֶם מֵאֵת אָבִי
When the other ten heard this they were indignant with the two brothers.24 וַיְהִי כַּאֲשֶׁר שָׁמְעוּ־זֹאת הָעֲשָׂרָה וַיִּכְעֲסוּ עַל־שְׁנֵי הָאַחִים
But Jesus cal ed them to him and said, 'You know that among the gentiles the rulers lord it over them, and great men make their authority felt.25 וְיֵשׁוּעַ קָרָא לָהֶם וַיֹּאמַר אַתֶּם יְדַעְתֶּם כִּי־שָׂרֵי הַגּוֹיִם רֹדִים בָּהֶם וְהַגְּדוֹלִים שֹׁלְטִים עֲלֵיהֶם
Among you this is not to happen. No; anyone who wants to become great among you must be yourservant,26 וְאַתֶּם אַל־יְהִי כֵן בֵּינֵיכֶם כִּי אִם־הֶחָפֵץ לִהְיוֹת גָּדוֹל בָּכֶם יְהִי לָכֶם לִמְשָׁרֵת
and anyone who wants to be first among you must be your slave,27 וְהֶחָפֵץ לִהְיוֹת בָּכֶם לְרֹאשׁ יְהִי לָכֶם עָבֶד
just as the Son of man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.'28 כַּאֲשֶׁר בֶּן־הָאָדָם לֹא בָא לְמַעַן יְשָׁרְתוּהוּ כִּי אִם־לְשָׁרֵת וְלָתֵת אֶת־נַפְשׁוֹ כֹּפֶר תַּחַת רַבִּים
As they left Jericho a large crowd fol owed him.29 וַיְהִי כְּצֵאתָם מִירִיחוֹ וַיֵּלֵךְ אַחֲרָיו הֲמוֹן עַם־רָב
And now there were two blind men sitting at the side of the road. When they heard that it was Jesuswho was passing by, they shouted, 'Lord! Have pity on us, son of David.'30 וְהִנֵּה שְׁנֵי־עִוְרִים ישְׁבִים עַל־יַד הַדָּרֶךְ וַיִּשְׁמְעוּ כִּי יֵשׁוּעַ עֹבֵר וַיִּצְעֲקוּ לֵאמֹר חָנֵּנוּ־נָא אֲדֹנֵינוּ בֶּן־דָּוִד
And the crowd scolded them and told them to keep quiet, but they only shouted the louder, 'Lord!Have pity on us, son of David.'31 וַיִּגְעַר־בָּם הָעָם לְהַשְׁתִּיקָם וְהֵם הִרְבּוּ לִצְעֹק וַיֹּאמְרוּ אֲדֹנֵינוּ חָנֵּנוּ־נָא בֶּן־דָּוִד
Jesus stopped, cal ed them over and said, 'What do you want me to do for you?'32 וַיַּעֲמֹד יֵשׁוּעַ וַיִּקְרָא לָהֶם וַיֹּאמַר מַה־תַּחְפְּצוּ וְאֶעֱשֶׂה לָכֶם
They said to him, 'Lord, let us have our sight back.'33 וַיֹּאמְרוּ אֵלָיו אֲדֹנֵינוּ עֲשֵׂה שֶׁתִּפָּקַחְנָה עֵינֵינוּ
Jesus felt pity for them and touched their eyes, and at once their sight returned and they fol owedhim.34 וְרַחֲמֵי יֵשׁוּעַ נִכְמָרוּ וַיִּגַּע בְּעֵינֵיהֶם וּפִתְאֹם הֵחֵלּוּ עֵינֵיהֶם לִרְאוֹת וַיֵּלְכוּ אַחֲרָיו
