NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
'Now the kingdom of Heaven is like a landowner going out at daybreak to hire workers for his vineyard.1 Simile est enim regnum cae lorum homini patri familias, qui exiit primomane conducere operarios in vineam suam;
He made an agreement with the workers for one denarius a day and sent them to his vineyard.2 conventione autem facta cum operariisex denario diurno, misit eos in vineam suam.
Going out at about the third hour he saw others standing idle in the market place3 Et egressus circa horam tertiamvidit alios stantes in foro otiosos
and said to them, "You go to my vineyard too and I wil give you a fair wage."4 et illis dixit: “Ite et vos in vineam;et, quod iustum fuerit, dabo vobis”.
So they went. At about the sixth hour and again at about the ninth hour, he went out and did the same.5 Illi autem abierunt. Iterum autem exiitcirca sextam et nonam horam et fecit similiter.
Then at about the eleventh hour he went out and found more men standing around, and he said tothem, "Why have you been standing here idle all day?"6 Circa undecimam vero exiit etinvenit alios stantes et dicit illis: “Quid hic statis tota die otiosi?”.
"Because no one has hired us," they answered. He said to them, "You go into my vineyard too."7 Dicunt ei: “Quia nemo nos conduxit”. Dicit illis: “Ite et vos in vineam”.
In the evening, the owner of the vineyard said to his bailiff, "Call the workers and pay them theirwages, starting with the last arrivals and ending with the first."8 Cum sero autem factum esset, dicit dominus vineae procuratori suo: “ Vocaoperarios et redde illis mercedem incipiens a novissimis usque ad primos ”.
So those who were hired at about the eleventh hour came forward and received one denarius each.9 Et cum venissent, qui circa undecimam horam venerant, acceperunt singulidenarium.
When the first came, they expected to get more, but they too received one denarius each.10 Venientes autem primi arbitrati sunt quod plus essent accepturi;acceperunt autem et ipsi singuli denarium.
They took it, but grumbled at the landowner saying,11 Accipientes autem murmurabantadversus patrem familias
"The men who came last have done only one hour, and you have treated them the same as us,though we have done a heavy day's work in al the heat."12 dicentes: “Hi novissimi una hora fecerunt, etpares illos nobis fecisti, qui portavimus pondus diei et aestum!”.
He answered one of them and said, "My friend, I am not being unjust to you; did we not agree on onedenarius?13 At illerespondens uni eorum dixit: “Amice, non facio tibi iniuriam; nonne ex denarioconvenisti mecum?
Take your earnings and go. I choose to pay the lastcomer as much as I pay you.14 Tolle, quod tuum est, et vade; volo autem et huic novissimodare sicut et tibi.
Have I no right to do what I like with my own? Why should you be envious because I am generous?"15 Aut non licet mihi, quod volo, facere de meis? An oculustuus nequam est, quia ego bonus sum?”.
Thus the last wil be first, and the first, last.'16 Sic erunt novissimi primi, et primi novissimi ”.
Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, and on the road he took the Twelve aside by themselves and saidto them,17 Et ascendens Iesus Hierosolymam assumpsit Duodecim discipulos secreto et aitillis in via:
'Look, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of man is about to be handed over to the chiefpriests and scribes. They wil condemn him to death18 “ Ecce ascendimus Hierosolymam, et Filius hominis tradeturprincipibus sacerdotum et scribis, et condemnabunt eum morte
and will hand him over to the gentiles to be mocked and scourged and crucified; and on the third dayhe wil be raised up again.'19 et tradent eumgentibus ad illudendum et flagellandum et crucifigendum, et tertia die resurget”.
Then the mother of Zebedee's sons came with her sons to make a request of him, and bowed low;20 Tunc accessit ad eum mater filiorum Zebedaei cum filiis suis, adorans etpetens aliquid ab eo.
and he said to her, 'What is it you want?' She said to him, 'Promise that these two sons of mine maysit one at your right hand and the other at your left in your kingdom.'21 Qui dixit ei: “ Quid vis? ”. Ait illi: “ Dic utsedeant hi duo filii mei unus ad dexteram tuam et unus ad sinistram in regno tuo”.
Jesus answered, 'You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I am going todrink?' They replied, 'We can.'22 Respondens autem Iesus dixit: “ Nescitis quid petatis. Potestis biberecalicem, quem ego bibiturus sum? ”. Dicunt ei: “ Possumus ”.
He said to them, 'Very wel ; you shal drink my cup, but as for seats at my right hand and my left,these are not mine to grant; they belong to those to whom they have been al otted by my Father.'23 Ait illis:“ Calicem quidem meum bibetis, sedere autem ad dexteram meam et sinistram nonest meum dare illud, sed quibus paratum est a Patre meo ”.
When the other ten heard this they were indignant with the two brothers.24 Et audientes decem indignati sunt de duobus fratribus.
But Jesus cal ed them to him and said, 'You know that among the gentiles the rulers lord it over them,and great men make their authority felt.25 Iesus autem vocaviteos ad se et ait: “ Scitis quia principes gentium dominantur eorum et, quimagni sunt, potestatem exercent in eos.
Among you this is not to happen. No; anyone who wants to become great among you must be yourservant,26 Non ita erit inter vos, sed quicumquevoluerit inter vos magnus fieri, erit vester minister;
and anyone who wants to be first among you must be your slave,27 et, quicumque volueritinter vos primus esse, erit vester servus;
just as the Son of man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.'28 sicut Filius hominis non venitministrari sed ministrare et dare animam suam redemptionem pro multis ”.
As they left Jericho a large crowd fol owed him.29 Et egredientibus illis ab Iericho, secuta est eum turba multa.
And now there were two blind men sitting at the side of the road. When they heard that it was Jesuswho was passing by, they shouted, 'Lord! Have pity on us, son of David.'30 Et ecce duocaeci sedentes secus viam audierunt quia Iesus transiret et clamaveruntdicentes: “ Domine, miserere nostri, fili David! ”.
And the crowd scolded them and told them to keep quiet, but they only shouted the louder, 'Lord!Have pity on us, son of David.'31 Turba autemincrepabat eos, ut tacerent; at illi magis clamabant dicentes: “ Domine,miserere nostri, fili David! ”.
Jesus stopped, cal ed them over and said, 'What do you want me to do for you?'32 Et stetit Iesus et vocavit eos et ait: “Quid vultis, ut faciam vobis?”.
They said to him, 'Lord, let us have our sight back.'33 Dicunt illi: “ Domine, ut aperianturoculi nostri ”.
Jesus felt pity for them and touched their eyes, and at once their sight returned and they fol owedhim.34 Misertus autem Iesus, tetigit oculos eorum; et confestimviderunt et secuti sunt eum.
