NEW JERUSALEMDOUAI-RHEIMS
'Now the kingdom of Heaven is like a landowner going out at daybreak to hire workers for his vineyard.1 The kingdom of heaven is like to an householder, who went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard.
He made an agreement with the workers for one denarius a day and sent them to his vineyard.2 And having agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard.
Going out at about the third hour he saw others standing idle in the market place3 And going about the third hour, he saw others standing in the market place idle.
and said to them, "You go to my vineyard too and I wil give you a fair wage."4 And he said to them: Go you also into my vineyard, and I will give you what shall be just.
So they went. At about the sixth hour and again at about the ninth hour, he went out and did the same.5 And they went their way. And again he went out about the sixth and the ninth hour, and did in like manner.
Then at about the eleventh hour he went out and found more men standing around, and he said tothem, "Why have you been standing here idle all day?"6 But about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing, and he saith to them: Why stand you here all the day idle?
"Because no one has hired us," they answered. He said to them, "You go into my vineyard too."7 They say to him: Because no man hath hired us. He saith to them: Go you also into my vineyard.
In the evening, the owner of the vineyard said to his bailiff, "Call the workers and pay them theirwages, starting with the last arrivals and ending with the first."8 And when evening was come, the lord of the vineyard saith to his steward: Call the labourers and pay them their hire, beginning from the last even to the first.
So those who were hired at about the eleventh hour came forward and received one denarius each.9 When therefore they were come, that came about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny.
When the first came, they expected to get more, but they too received one denarius each.10 But when the first also came, they thought that they should receive more: and they also received every man a penny.
They took it, but grumbled at the landowner saying,11 And receiving it they murmured against the master of the house,
"The men who came last have done only one hour, and you have treated them the same as us,though we have done a heavy day's work in al the heat."12 Saying: These last have worked but one hour, and thou hast made them equal to us, that have borne the burden of the day and the heats.
He answered one of them and said, "My friend, I am not being unjust to you; did we not agree on onedenarius?13 But he answering said to one of them: Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst thou not agree with me for a penny?
Take your earnings and go. I choose to pay the lastcomer as much as I pay you.14 Take what is thine, and go thy way: I will also give to this last even as to thee.
Have I no right to do what I like with my own? Why should you be envious because I am generous?"15 Or, is it not lawful for me to do what I will? is thy eye evil, because I am good?
Thus the last wil be first, and the first, last.'16 So shall the last be first, and the first last. For many are called, but few chosen.
Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, and on the road he took the Twelve aside by themselves and saidto them,17 And Jesus going up to Jerusalem, took the twelve disciples apart, and said to them:
'Look, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of man is about to be handed over to the chiefpriests and scribes. They wil condemn him to death18 Behold we go up to Jerusalem, and the Son of man shall be betrayed to the chief priests and the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death.
and will hand him over to the gentiles to be mocked and scourged and crucified; and on the third dayhe wil be raised up again.'19 And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to be mocked, and scourged, and crucified, and the third day he shall rise again.
Then the mother of Zebedee's sons came with her sons to make a request of him, and bowed low;20 Then came to him the mother of the sons of Zebedee with her sons, adoring and asking something of him.
and he said to her, 'What is it you want?' She said to him, 'Promise that these two sons of mine maysit one at your right hand and the other at your left in your kingdom.'21 Who said to her: What wilt thou? She saith to him: Say that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left, in thy kingdom.
Jesus answered, 'You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I am going todrink?' They replied, 'We can.'22 And Jesus answering, said: You know not what you ask. Can you drink the chalice that I shall drink? They say to him: We can.
He said to them, 'Very wel ; you shal drink my cup, but as for seats at my right hand and my left, these are not mine to grant; they belong to those to whom they have been al otted by my Father.'23 He saith to them: My chalice indeed you shall drink; but to sit on my right or left hand, is not mine to give to you, but to them for whom it is prepared by my Father.
When the other ten heard this they were indignant with the two brothers.24 And the ten hearing it, were moved with indignation against the two brethren.
But Jesus cal ed them to him and said, 'You know that among the gentiles the rulers lord it over them, and great men make their authority felt.25 But Jesus called them to him, and said: You know that the princes of the Gentiles lord it over them; and they that are the greater, exercise power upon them.
Among you this is not to happen. No; anyone who wants to become great among you must be yourservant,26 It shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be the greater among you, let him be your minister:
and anyone who wants to be first among you must be your slave,27 And he that will be first among you, shall be your servant.
just as the Son of man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.'28 Even as the Son of man is not come to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a redemption for many.
As they left Jericho a large crowd fol owed him.29 And when they went out from Jericho, a great multitude followed him.
And now there were two blind men sitting at the side of the road. When they heard that it was Jesuswho was passing by, they shouted, 'Lord! Have pity on us, son of David.'30 And behold two blind men sitting by the way side, heard that Jesus passed by, and they cried out, saying: O Lord, thou son of David, have mercy on us.
And the crowd scolded them and told them to keep quiet, but they only shouted the louder, 'Lord!Have pity on us, son of David.'31 And the multitude rebuked them that they should hold their peace. But they cried out the more, saying: O Lord, thou son of David, have mercy on us.
Jesus stopped, cal ed them over and said, 'What do you want me to do for you?'32 And Jesus stood, and called them, and said: What will ye that I do to you?
They said to him, 'Lord, let us have our sight back.'33 They say to him: Lord, that our eyes be opened.
Jesus felt pity for them and touched their eyes, and at once their sight returned and they fol owedhim.34 And Jesus having compassion on them, touched their eyes. And immediately they saw, and followed him.
