NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
Yahweh spoke to Moses and said:1 Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen, dicens :
'This is the law to be applied on the day of the purification of someone who has suffered from acontagious skin-disease. Such a person wil be taken to the priest,2 Hic est ritus leprosi, quando mundandus est. Adducetur ad sacerdotem :
and the priest wil go outside the camp. If he finds on examination that the person has recovered fromthe disease,3 qui egressus de castris, cum invenerit lepram esse mundatam,
he wil order the fol owing to be brought for his purification: two live birds that are clean, some cedar wood, scarlet material and hyssop.4 præcipiet ei, qui purificatur, ut offerat duos passeres vivos pro se, quibus vesci licitum est, et lignum cedrinum, vermiculumque et hyssopum.
He will then order one of the birds to be slaughtered in an earthenware pot over running water.5 Et unum ex passeribus immolari jubebit in vase fictili super aquas viventes :
He will then take the live bird, the cedar wood, the scarlet material and the hyssop and dip all this(including the live bird) into the blood of the bird slaughtered over running water.6 alium autem vivum cum ligno cedrino, et cocco et hyssopo, tinget in sanguine passeris immolati,
He will then sprinkle the person to be purified of the skin-disease seven times, and having declared theperson clean, wil set the live bird free to fly off into the countryside.7 quo asperget illum, qui mundandus est, septies, ut jure purgetur : et dimittet passerem vivum, ut in agrum avolet.
The person who is being purified will then wash al clothing, shave off al hair, and wash, and wil thenbe clean. After this he will return to the camp, although he wil remain outside his tent for seven days.8 Cumque laverit homo vestimenta sua, radet omnes pilos corporis, et lavabitur aqua : purificatusque ingredietur castra, ita dumtaxat ut maneat extra tabernaculum suum septem diebus,
On the seventh day he wil shave off all his hair-head, beard and eyebrows; he wil shave off al hishair. After washing his clothing and his body he wil be clean.9 et die septimo radet capillos capitis, barbamque et supercilia, ac totius corporis pilos. Et lotis rursum vestibus et corpore,
'On the eighth day he wil take two unblemished lambs, an unblemished ewe one year old, three-tenths of wheaten flour mixed with oil for the cereal offering, and one log of oil.10 die octavo assumet duos agnos immaculatos, et ovem anniculam absque macula, et tres decimas similæ in sacrificium, quæ conspersa sit oleo, et seorsum olei sextarium.
The priest who is performing the purification will place the person who is being purified, with all hisofferings, at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, before Yahweh.11 Cumque sacerdos purificans hominem, statuerit eum, et hæc omnia coram Domino in ostio tabernaculi testimonii,
He wil then take one of the lambs and offer it as a sacrifice of reparation, as also the log of oil. Withthese he wil make the gesture of offering before Yahweh.12 tollet agnum et offeret eum pro delicto, oleique sextarium : et oblatis ante Dominum omnibus,
He wil then slaughter the lamb on that spot inside the holy place where the victims for the sacrificefor sin and for the burnt offering are slaughtered. This reparatory offering, like the sacrifice for sin, wil revert tothe priest: it is especially holy.13 immolabit agnum, ubi solet immolari hostia pro peccato, et holocaustum, id est, in loco sancto. Sicut enim pro peccato, ita et pro delicto ad sacerdotem pertinet hostia : Sancta sanctorum est.
The priest wil then take some blood of this sacrifice and put it on the lobe of the right ear, the thumbof the right hand, and the big toe of the right foot of the person who is being purified.14 Assumensque sacerdos de sanguine hostiæ, quæ immolata est pro delicto, ponet super extremum auriculæ dextræ ejus qui mundatur, et super pollices manus dextræ et pedis :
He wil then take the log of oil and pour a little into the hol ow of his left hand.15 et de olei sextario mittet in manum suam sinistram,
He wil dip a finger of his right hand into the oil in the hollow of his left hand, and sprinkle the oil withhis finger seven times before Yahweh.16 tingetque digitum dextrum in eo, et asperget coram Domino septies.
He wil then take some of the oil left in the hollow of his hand and put it on the lobe of the right ear,the thumb of the right hand, and the big toe of the right foot of the person being purified, in addition to the bloodof the sacrifice of reparation.17 Quod autem reliquum est olei in læva manu, fundet super extremum auriculæ dextræ ejus qui mundatur, et super pollices manus ac pedis dextri, et super sanguinem qui effusus est pro delicto,
The rest of the oil in the hol ow of his hand he will put on the head of the person who is being purified. This is how the priest wil perform the rite of expiation for such a person before Yahweh.18 et super caput ejus.
'The priest wil then offer the sacrifice for sin, and perform the rite of expiation for uncleanness for theperson who is being purified. After this, he wil slaughter the burnt offering19 Rogabitque pro eo coram Domino, et faciet sacrificium pro peccato : tunc immolabit holocaustum,
and offer this and the cereal offering on the altar. So, when the priest has performed the rite ofexpiation for him the person wil be clean.20 et ponet illud in altari cum libamentis suis, et homo rite mundabitur.
'If he is poor and cannot afford al this, he need take only one lamb, the one for the sacrifice ofreparation, and this will be presented with the gesture of offering to perform the rite of expiation for him. And forthe cereal offering he wil only take one-tenth of wheaten flour mixed with oil, and the log of oil,21 Quod si pauper est, et non potest manus ejus invenire quæ dicta sunt pro delicto, assumet agnum ad oblationem, ut roget pro eo sacerdos, decimamque partem similæ conspersæ oleo in sacrificium, et olei sextarium,
and two turtledoves or two young pigeons, whichever he can afford, one for a sacrifice for sin and theother for the burnt offering.22 duosque turtures sive duos pullos columbæ, quorum unus sit pro peccato, et alter in holocaustum :
He wil bring these on the eighth day to the priest at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting beforeYahweh, for his purification.23 offeretque ea die octavo purificationis suæ sacerdoti, ad ostium tabernaculi testimonii coram Domino.
The priest wil take the lamb for the sacrifice of reparation and the log of oil, and present them beforeYahweh with the gesture of offering.24 Qui suscipiens agnum pro delicto et sextarium olei, levabit simul :
He wil then slaughter the lamb for the sacrifice of reparation, take some of its blood and put it on thelobe of the right ear, the thumb of the right hand and the big toe of the right foot of the person who is beingpurified.25 immolatoque agno, de sanguine ejus ponet super extremum auriculæ dextræ illius qui mundatur, et super pollices manus ejus ac pedis dextri :
He wil pour the oil into the hol ow of his left hand,26 olei vero partem mittet in manum suam sinistram,
and with his finger sprinkle the oil in the hol ow of his left hand seven times before Yahweh.27 in quo tingens digitum dextræ manus asperget septies coram Domino :
He wil then put some of the oil on the lobe of the right ear, the thumb of the right hand and the bigtoe of the right foot of the person who is being purified, as he did with the blood of the sacrifice of reparation.28 tangetque extremum dextræ auriculæ illius qui mundatur, et pollices manus ac pedis dextri, in loco sanguinis qui effusus est pro delicto :
The remainder of the oil in the hol ow of his hand he wil put on the head of the person who is beingpurified, thus performing the rite of expiation for him before Yahweh.29 reliquam autem partem olei, quæ est in sinistra manu, mittet super caput purificati, ut placet pro eo Dominum :
Of the two turtledoves or two young pigeons -- whatever he has been able to afford -- he wil offer30 et turturem sive pullum columbæ offeret,
a sacrifice for sin with one, and with the other a burnt offering with a cereal offering -- whatever hehas been able to afford. This is how the priest will perform before Yahweh the rite of expiation for the person whois being purified.31 unum pro delicto, et alterum in holocaustum cum libamentis suis.
'Such is the law concerning someone with a contagious skin-disease who cannot afford the means ofpurification.'32 Hoc est sacrificium leprosi, qui habere non potest omnia in emundationem sui.
Yahweh spoke to Moses and Aaron and said:33 Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen et Aaron, dicens :
'When you reach Canaan, which I am giving you as your possession, if I infect a house with adisease in the country which you are to possess,34 Cum ingressi fueritis terram Chanaan, quam ego dabo vobis in possessionem, si fuerit plaga lepræ in ædibus,
the owner wil come and inform the priest and say, "I have seen something like a skin-disease in thehouse."35 ibit cujus est domus, nuntians sacerdoti, et dicet : Quasi plaga lepræ videtur mihi esse in domo mea.
The priest wil order the house to be emptied before he goes to examine the infection, or everything inthe house wil become unclean; after which, the priest wil go inside and examine the house;36 At ille præcipiet ut efferant universa de domo, priusquam ingrediatur eam, et videat utrum leprosa sit, ne immunda fiant omnia quæ in domo sunt. Intrabitque postea ut consideret lepram domus :
and if on examination he finds the wal s of the house pitted with reddish or greenish depressionswhich appear to be eating away the wall,37 et cum viderit in parietibus illius quasi valliculas pallore sive rubore deformes, et humiliores superficie reliqua,
the priest wil then go out of the house, to the door, and shut it up for seven days.38 egredietur ostium domus, et statim claudet illam septem diebus.
On the seventh day, the priest will come back and if on examination he finds that the infection hasspread over the walls of the house,39 Reversusque die septimo, considerabit eam : si invenerit crevisse lepram,
he wil order the infected stones to be removed and thrown into some unclean place outside the town.40 jubebit erui lapides in quibus lepra est, et projici eos extra civitatem in locum immundum :
He wil then have all the inside of the house scraped, and the plaster that comes off will be emptied inan unclean place outside the town.41 domum autem ipsam radi intrinsecus per circuitum, et spargi pulverem rasuræ extra urbem in locum immundum,
The stones wil then be replaced with new ones and the house given a new coat of plaster.42 lapidesque alios reponi pro his qui ablati fuerint, et luto alio liniri domum.
'If the infection spreads again after the stones have been removed and the house scraped andreplastered,43 Sin autem postquam eruti sunt lapides, et pulvis erasus, et alia terra lita,
the priest wil come and examine it. If he finds that the infection has spread, this means that there is acontagious disease in the house: it is unclean.44 ingressus sacerdos viderit reversam lepram, et parietes respersos maculis, lepra est perseverans, et immunda domus :
It must be pul ed down and the stones, woodwork and al the plaster be taken to an unclean placeoutside the town.45 quam statim destruent, et lapides ejus ac ligna, atque universum pulverem projicient extra oppidum in locum immundum.
'Anyone who enters the house while it is closed wil be unclean until evening.46 Qui intraverit domum quando clausa est, immundus erit usque ad vesperum :
Anyone who sleeps there wil wash his clothes. Anyone who eats there will wash his clothes.47 et qui dormierit in ea, et comederit quippiam, lavabit vestimenta sua.
But if the priest finds, when he comes to examine the infection, that it has not spread in the housesince it was plastered, he wil declare the house clean, for the infection is cured.48 Quod si introiens sacerdos viderit lepram non crevisse in domo, postquam denuo lita fuerit, purificabit eam reddita sanitate :
'As a sacrifice for the defilement of the house, he wil take two birds, some cedar wood, scarletmaterial and hyssop.49 et in purificationem ejus sumet duos passeres, lignumque cedrinum, et vermiculum atque hyssopum :
He wil slaughter one of the birds in an earthenware pot over running water.50 et immolato uno passere in vase fictili super aquas vivas,
He wil then take the cedar wood, the hyssop, the scarlet material and the live bird, dip them into theblood of the slaughtered bird and into the running water and sprinkle the house seven times;51 tollet lignum cedrinum, et hyssopum, et coccum, et passerem vivum, et tinget omnia in sanguine passeris immolati, atque in aquis viventibus, et asperget domum septies,
and after offering the sacrifice for the defilement of the house with the blood of the bird, the runningwater, the live bird, the cedar wood, the hyssop and the scarlet material,52 purificabitque eam tam in sanguine passeris quam in aquis viventibus, et in passere vivo, lignoque cedrino et hyssopo atque vermiculo.
he wil set the live bird free to fly out of the town into the countryside. Once the rite of expiation hasbeen performed for the house in this way it wil be clean.53 Cumque dimiserit passerem avolare in agrum libere, orabit pro domo, et jure mundabitur.
'Such is the law governing all kinds of skin-disease and tinea,54 Ista est lex omnis lepræ et percussuræ,
diseases of clothing and houses,55 lepræ vestium et domorum,
swel ings, scabs and spots. It defines the occasions when things are unclean and when clean.56 cicatricis et erumpentium papularum, lucentis maculæ, et in varias species, coloribus immutatis,
Such is the law on skin-diseases.'57 ut possit sciri quo tempore mundum quid, vel immundum sit.
