Yahweh spoke to Moses and said:1 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
'This is the law to be applied on the day of the purification of someone who has suffered from acontagious skin-disease. Such a person wil be taken to the priest,2 This is the rite for a leper, when he is to be cleansed. He shall be brought to the priest,
and the priest wil go outside the camp. If he finds on examination that the person has recovered fromthe disease,3 who, departing from the camp, when he has found the leprosy to be cleansed,
he wil order the fol owing to be brought for his purification: two live birds that are clean, some cedar wood, scarlet material and hyssop.4 shall instruct him who is to be purified to offer for himself two living sparrows, which it is lawful to eat, and cedar wood, and vermillion, and hyssop.
He will then order one of the birds to be slaughtered in an earthenware pot over running water.5 And he shall order that one of the sparrows be immolated in an earthen vessel over living waters.
He will then take the live bird, the cedar wood, the scarlet material and the hyssop and dip all this(including the live bird) into the blood of the bird slaughtered over running water.6 But the other living one, with the cedar wood, and the scarlet, and the hyssop, he shall dip in the blood of the immolated sparrow.
He will then sprinkle the person to be purified of the skin-disease seven times, and having declared theperson clean, wil set the live bird free to fly off into the countryside.7 And he shall sprinkle him who is to be cleansed seven times, so that he may be purified justly. And he shall release the living sparrow, so that it may fly away into the field.
The person who is being purified will then wash al clothing, shave off al hair, and wash, and wil thenbe clean. After this he will return to the camp, although he wil remain outside his tent for seven days.8 And when the man will have washed his clothes, he shall shave all the hair from his body, and he shall be washed with water. And having been purified, he shall enter into the camp, only to this extent: that he may remain outside his own tent for seven days.
On the seventh day he wil shave off all his hair-head, beard and eyebrows; he wil shave off al hishair. After washing his clothing and his body he wil be clean.9 And on the seventh day he shall shave the hair of his head, and his beard, and his eyebrows, as well as the hair of his entire body. And having washed his clothes again, and his body,
'On the eighth day he wil take two unblemished lambs, an unblemished ewe one year old, three-tenths of wheaten flour mixed with oil for the cereal offering, and one log of oil.10 on the eighth day, he shall take two immaculate lambs, and a one-year-old female sheep without blemish, and three tenths of fine wheat flour, which has been sprinkled with oil, as a sacrifice, and separately, one twelfth hin of oil.
The priest who is performing the purification will place the person who is being purified, with all hisofferings, at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, before Yahweh.11 And when the priest purifying the man has presented him and all these things in the sight of the Lord at the door of the tabernacle of the testimony,
He wil then take one of the lambs and offer it as a sacrifice of reparation, as also the log of oil. Withthese he wil make the gesture of offering before Yahweh.12 he shall take a lamb and offer it for transgression, with the twelfth hin of oil. And having offered all these before the Lord,
He wil then slaughter the lamb on that spot inside the holy place where the victims for the sacrificefor sin and for the burnt offering are slaughtered. This reparatory offering, like the sacrifice for sin, wil revert tothe priest: it is especially holy.13 he shall immolate the lamb, where the victim for sin is usually immolated with the holocaust, that is, in the holy place. For just as with the one for sin, so also the victim for transgression belongs to the priest. It is the Holy of holies.
The priest wil then take some blood of this sacrifice and put it on the lobe of the right ear, the thumbof the right hand, and the big toe of the right foot of the person who is being purified.14 And taking some of the blood of the victim, which was immolated for transgression, the priest shall place it upon the tip of the right ear of him who is being cleansed, and upon the thumb of his right hand, and likewise the foot.
He wil then take the log of oil and pour a little into the hol ow of his left hand.15 And he shall send some of the twelfth hin of oil into his own left hand,
He wil dip a finger of his right hand into the oil in the hollow of his left hand, and sprinkle the oil withhis finger seven times before Yahweh.16 and he shall dip his right finger in it, and he shall sprinkle it in the sight of the Lord seven times.
He wil then take some of the oil left in the hollow of his hand and put it on the lobe of the right ear,the thumb of the right hand, and the big toe of the right foot of the person being purified, in addition to the bloodof the sacrifice of reparation.17 But the oil which remains in his left hand, he shall pour over the tip of the right ear of him who is being cleansed, and upon the thumb of his right hand as well as the foot, and upon the blood which was shed for transgression,
The rest of the oil in the hol ow of his hand he will put on the head of the person who is being purified. This is how the priest wil perform the rite of expiation for such a person before Yahweh.18 and upon his head.
'The priest wil then offer the sacrifice for sin, and perform the rite of expiation for uncleanness for theperson who is being purified. After this, he wil slaughter the burnt offering19 And he shall pray for him in the sight of the Lord, and he shall accomplish the sacrifice on behalf of sin. Then he shall immolate the holocaust,
and offer this and the cereal offering on the altar. So, when the priest has performed the rite ofexpiation for him the person wil be clean.20 and place it upon the altar with its libations, and the man will be duly cleansed.
'If he is poor and cannot afford al this, he need take only one lamb, the one for the sacrifice ofreparation, and this will be presented with the gesture of offering to perform the rite of expiation for him. And forthe cereal offering he wil only take one-tenth of wheaten flour mixed with oil, and the log of oil,21 But if he is poor, and his hand is not able to find what has been said, he shall take a lamb as an offering for transgression, so that the priest may pray for him, and a tenth part of fine wheat flour sprinkled with oil, as a sacrifice, and a twelfth hin of oil,
and two turtledoves or two young pigeons, whichever he can afford, one for a sacrifice for sin and theother for the burnt offering.22 and two turtledoves or two young pigeons, of which one may be for sin, and the other as a holocaust.
He wil bring these on the eighth day to the priest at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting beforeYahweh, for his purification.23 And he shall offer them on the eighth day of his purification to the priest at the door of the tabernacle of the testimony in the sight of the Lord.
The priest wil take the lamb for the sacrifice of reparation and the log of oil, and present them beforeYahweh with the gesture of offering.24 And he, receiving the lamb for transgression, and the twelfth hin of oil, shall lift them up together.
He wil then slaughter the lamb for the sacrifice of reparation, take some of its blood and put it on thelobe of the right ear, the thumb of the right hand and the big toe of the right foot of the person who is beingpurified.25 And when the lamb has been immolated, he shall place some of its blood upon the tip of the right ear of him who is being cleansed, and upon the thumb of his right hand, as well as the foot.
He wil pour the oil into the hol ow of his left hand,26 Yet truly, he shall send part of the oil into his own left hand,
and with his finger sprinkle the oil in the hol ow of his left hand seven times before Yahweh.27 and dipping the finger of his right hand in it, he shall sprinkle it seven times before the Lord.
He wil then put some of the oil on the lobe of the right ear, the thumb of the right hand and the bigtoe of the right foot of the person who is being purified, as he did with the blood of the sacrifice of reparation.28 And he shall touch the tip of the right ear of him who is being cleansed, and the thumb of his right hand, as well as the foot, in the place of the blood which was shed for transgression.
The remainder of the oil in the hol ow of his hand he wil put on the head of the person who is beingpurified, thus performing the rite of expiation for him before Yahweh.29 But the remaining part of the oil which is in his left hand, he shall send upon the head of the one being purified, to appease the Lord on his behalf.
Of the two turtledoves or two young pigeons -- whatever he has been able to afford -- he wil offer30 And he shall offer a turtledove or a young pigeon,
a sacrifice for sin with one, and with the other a burnt offering with a cereal offering -- whatever hehas been able to afford. This is how the priest will perform before Yahweh the rite of expiation for the person whois being purified.31 one for transgression, and the other as a holocaust, with their libations.
'Such is the law concerning someone with a contagious skin-disease who cannot afford the means ofpurification.'32 This is the sacrifice of a leper, who is not able to obtain all of the things concerning his cleansing.
Yahweh spoke to Moses and Aaron and said:33 And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying:
'When you reach Canaan, which I am giving you as your possession, if I infect a house with adisease in the country which you are to possess,34 When you will have entered into the land of Canaan, which I will give to you as a possession, if there is the mark of leprosy in a building,
the owner wil come and inform the priest and say, "I have seen something like a skin-disease in thehouse."35 he whose house it is shall go and report to the priest, saying: “It seems to me that the mark of leprosy is in my house.”
The priest wil order the house to be emptied before he goes to examine the infection, or everything inthe house wil become unclean; after which, the priest wil go inside and examine the house;36 And he shall instruct them to carry all things out of the house, before he would enter it and see whether it is leprosy, lest all that is in the house become unclean. And after this, he shall enter to examine the leprosy of the house.
and if on examination he finds the wal s of the house pitted with reddish or greenish depressionswhich appear to be eating away the wall,37 And when he will have seen in its walls something like little hollows, deformed with paleness or redness, and lower than the remaining surface,
the priest wil then go out of the house, to the door, and shut it up for seven days.38 he shall exit by the door of the house, and immediately close it up for seven days.
On the seventh day, the priest will come back and if on examination he finds that the infection hasspread over the walls of the house,39 And returning on the seventh day, he shall examine it. If he finds that the leprosy has spread,
he wil order the infected stones to be removed and thrown into some unclean place outside the town.40 he shall order the stones in which the leprosy is, to be dug out and cast outside the city in an unclean place,
He wil then have all the inside of the house scraped, and the plaster that comes off will be emptied inan unclean place outside the town.41 and that the house be scraped on the inside all around, and that the dust of the scrapings be scattered outside the city in an unclean place,
The stones wil then be replaced with new ones and the house given a new coat of plaster.42 and that other stones be put back, in place of those which had been taken away, and that the house be plastered with other mortar.
'If the infection spreads again after the stones have been removed and the house scraped andreplastered,43 But if, after the stones have been dug out, and the dust wiped away, and it is plastered with other clay,
the priest wil come and examine it. If he finds that the infection has spread, this means that there is acontagious disease in the house: it is unclean.44 the priest, upon entering, will have seen that the leprosy has returned, and that the walls are sprinkled with spots, then it is a persistent leprosy and the house is unclean.
It must be pul ed down and the stones, woodwork and al the plaster be taken to an unclean placeoutside the town.45 And so they shall promptly destroy it, and shall cast its stones and timber, and also all the dust, outside the town in an unclean place.
'Anyone who enters the house while it is closed wil be unclean until evening.46 Whoever enters into the house when it is closed up shall be unclean until evening.
Anyone who sleeps there wil wash his clothes. Anyone who eats there will wash his clothes.47 And whoever will have slept in it, or eaten anything, shall wash his clothes.
But if the priest finds, when he comes to examine the infection, that it has not spread in the housesince it was plastered, he wil declare the house clean, for the infection is cured.48 But if the priest, upon entering, will have seen that the leprosy has not spread in the house, after it had been newly plastered, he shall purify it, restoring it to health.
'As a sacrifice for the defilement of the house, he wil take two birds, some cedar wood, scarletmaterial and hyssop.49 And for its purification, he shall take two sparrows, and cedar wood, and vermillion, as well as hyssop,
He wil slaughter one of the birds in an earthenware pot over running water.50 and, having immolated one sparrow in an earthen vessel over living waters,
He wil then take the cedar wood, the hyssop, the scarlet material and the live bird, dip them into theblood of the slaughtered bird and into the running water and sprinkle the house seven times;51 he shall take the cedar wood, and the hyssop, and the scarlet, and the living sparrow, and he shall dip all these in the blood of the immolated sparrow, and also in the living water, and he shall sprinkle the house seven times.
and after offering the sacrifice for the defilement of the house with the blood of the bird, the runningwater, the live bird, the cedar wood, the hyssop and the scarlet material,52 And he shall purify it as much with the blood of the sparrow as with the living water, and with the living sparrow, and the cedar wood, and the hyssop, and the vermillion.
he wil set the live bird free to fly out of the town into the countryside. Once the rite of expiation hasbeen performed for the house in this way it wil be clean.53 And when he has released the sparrow to fly freely away into the field, he shall pray for the house, and it shall be justly cleansed.
'Such is the law governing all kinds of skin-disease and tinea,54 This is the law of every kind of leprosy and plague:
diseases of clothing and houses,55 of the leprosy of garments and houses,
swel ings, scabs and spots. It defines the occasions when things are unclean and when clean.56 of scars and erupting pustules, of a shining spot, when the appearance is also variegated,
Such is the law on skin-diseases.'57 so that it can be known at what time a thing is clean or unclean.
