Yahweh spoke to Moses and said:1 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
'This is the law to be applied on the day of the purification of someone who has suffered from acontagious skin-disease. Such a person wil be taken to the priest,2 This is the rite of a leper, when he is to be cleansed: he shall be brought to the priest:
and the priest wil go outside the camp. If he finds on examination that the person has recovered fromthe disease,3 Who going out of the camp when he shall And that the leprosy is cleansed,
he wil order the fol owing to be brought for his purification: two live birds that are clean, some cedar wood, scarlet material and hyssop.4 Shall command him that is to be purified, to offer for himself two living sparrows, which it is lawful to eat, and cedar wood, and scarlet, and hyssop.
He will then order one of the birds to be slaughtered in an earthenware pot over running water.5 And he shall command one of the sparrows to be immolated in an earthen vessel over living waters:
He will then take the live bird, the cedar wood, the scarlet material and the hyssop and dip all this(including the live bird) into the blood of the bird slaughtered over running water.6 But the other that is alive he shall dip, with the cedar wood, and the scarlet and the hyssop, in the blood of the sparrow that is immolated:
He will then sprinkle the person to be purified of the skin-disease seven times, and having declared theperson clean, wil set the live bird free to fly off into the countryside.7 Wherewith he shall sprinkle him that is to be cleansed seven times, that he may be rightly purified: and he shall let go the living sparrow, that it may fly into the field.
The person who is being purified will then wash al clothing, shave off al hair, and wash, and wil thenbe clean. After this he will return to the camp, although he wil remain outside his tent for seven days.8 And when the man hath washed his clothes, he shall shave all the hair of his body, and shall be washed with water: and being purified, he shall enter into the camp, yet so that he tarry without his own tent seven days:
On the seventh day he wil shave off all his hair-head, beard and eyebrows; he wil shave off al hishair. After washing his clothing and his body he wil be clean.9 And on the seventh day he shall shave the hair of his head, and his beard and his eyebrows, and the hair of all his body. And having washed again his clothes, and his body,
'On the eighth day he wil take two unblemished lambs, an unblemished ewe one year old, three-tenths of wheaten flour mixed with oil for the cereal offering, and one log of oil.10 On the eighth day he shall take two lambs without blemish, and an ewe of a year old without blemish, and three tenths of flour tempered with oil for a sacrifice, and a sextary of oil apart.
The priest who is performing the purification will place the person who is being purified, with all hisofferings, at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, before Yahweh.11 And when the priest that purifieth the man, hath presented him, and all these things before the Lord, at the door of the tabernacle of the testimony,
He wil then take one of the lambs and offer it as a sacrifice of reparation, as also the log of oil. Withthese he wil make the gesture of offering before Yahweh.12 He shall take a. lamb, and offer it for a trespass offering with the sextary of oil: and having offered all before the Lord,
He wil then slaughter the lamb on that spot inside the holy place where the victims for the sacrificefor sin and for the burnt offering are slaughtered. This reparatory offering, like the sacrifice for sin, wil revert tothe priest: it is especially holy.13 He shall immolate the lamb, where the victim for sin is wont to be immolated, and the holocaust, that is, in the holy place: for as that which is for sin, so also the victim for a trespass offering pertaineth to the priest: it is holy of holies.
The priest wil then take some blood of this sacrifice and put it on the lobe of the right ear, the thumbof the right hand, and the big toe of the right foot of the person who is being purified.14 And the priest taking of the blood of the victim that was immolated for trespass, shall put it upon the tip of the right ear of him that is cleansed, and upon the thumb of his right hand and the great toe of his right foot:
He wil then take the log of oil and pour a little into the hol ow of his left hand.15 And he shall pour of the sextary of oil into his own left. hand,
He wil dip a finger of his right hand into the oil in the hollow of his left hand, and sprinkle the oil withhis finger seven times before Yahweh.16 And shall dip his right finger in it, and sprinkle it before the Lord seven times.
He wil then take some of the oil left in the hollow of his hand and put it on the lobe of the right ear,the thumb of the right hand, and the big toe of the right foot of the person being purified, in addition to the bloodof the sacrifice of reparation.17 And the rest of the oil in his left band, he shall pour upon the tip of the right ear of him that is cleansed, and upon the thumb of his right hand and the great toe of his right foot, and upon the blood that was shed for trespass,
The rest of the oil in the hol ow of his hand he will put on the head of the person who is being purified. This is how the priest wil perform the rite of expiation for such a person before Yahweh.18 And upon his head.
'The priest wil then offer the sacrifice for sin, and perform the rite of expiation for uncleanness for theperson who is being purified. After this, he wil slaughter the burnt offering19 And he shall pray for him before the Lord, and shall offer the sacrifice for sin: then shall he immolate the holocaust,
and offer this and the cereal offering on the altar. So, when the priest has performed the rite ofexpiation for him the person wil be clean.20 And put it on the altar with the libations thereof, and the man shall be rightly cleansed.
'If he is poor and cannot afford al this, he need take only one lamb, the one for the sacrifice ofreparation, and this will be presented with the gesture of offering to perform the rite of expiation for him. And forthe cereal offering he wil only take one-tenth of wheaten flour mixed with oil, and the log of oil,21 But if he be poor, and his hand cannot find the things aforesaid: he shall take a lamb for an offering for trespass, that the priest may pray for him, and a tenth part of hour tempered with oil for a sacrifice, and a sextary of oil,
and two turtledoves or two young pigeons, whichever he can afford, one for a sacrifice for sin and theother for the burnt offering.22 And two turtles or two young pigeons, of which one may be for sin, and the other for a holocaust:
He wil bring these on the eighth day to the priest at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting beforeYahweh, for his purification.23 And he shall offer them on the eighth day of his purification to the priest, at the door of the tabernacle of the testimony before the Lord.
The priest wil take the lamb for the sacrifice of reparation and the log of oil, and present them beforeYahweh with the gesture of offering.24 And the priest receiving the lamb for trespass, and the sextary of oil, shall elevate them together.
He wil then slaughter the lamb for the sacrifice of reparation, take some of its blood and put it on thelobe of the right ear, the thumb of the right hand and the big toe of the right foot of the person who is beingpurified.25 And the lamb being immolated, he shall put of the blood thereof upon the tip of the right ear of him that is cleansed, and upon the thumb of his right hand, and the great toe of his right foot:
He wil pour the oil into the hol ow of his left hand,26 But he shall pour part of the oil into his own left hand,
and with his finger sprinkle the oil in the hol ow of his left hand seven times before Yahweh.27 And dipping the finger of his right hand in it, he shall sprinkle it seven times before the Lord:
He wil then put some of the oil on the lobe of the right ear, the thumb of the right hand and the bigtoe of the right foot of the person who is being purified, as he did with the blood of the sacrifice of reparation.28 And he shall touch the tip of the right ear of him that is cleansed, and the thumb of his right hand and the great toe of his right foot, in the place of the blood that was shed for trespass.
The remainder of the oil in the hol ow of his hand he wil put on the head of the person who is beingpurified, thus performing the rite of expiation for him before Yahweh.29 And the other part of the oil that is in his left hand, he shall pour upon the head of the purified person, that he may appease the Lord for him.
Of the two turtledoves or two young pigeons -- whatever he has been able to afford -- he wil offer30 And he shall offer a turtle, or young pigeon,
a sacrifice for sin with one, and with the other a burnt offering with a cereal offering -- whatever hehas been able to afford. This is how the priest will perform before Yahweh the rite of expiation for the person whois being purified.31 One for trespass, and the other for a holocaust, with their libations.
'Such is the law concerning someone with a contagious skin-disease who cannot afford the means ofpurification.'32 This is the sacrifice of a leper, that is not able to have all things that appertain to his cleansing.
Yahweh spoke to Moses and Aaron and said:33 And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying:
'When you reach Canaan, which I am giving you as your possession, if I infect a house with adisease in the country which you are to possess,34 When you shall be come into the land of Chanaan, which I will give you for a possession, if there be the plague of leprosy in a house,
the owner wil come and inform the priest and say, "I have seen something like a skin-disease in thehouse."35 He whose house it is, shall go and tell the priest, saying: It seemeth to me, that there is the plague of leprosy in my house,
The priest wil order the house to be emptied before he goes to examine the infection, or everything inthe house wil become unclean; after which, the priest wil go inside and examine the house;36 And he shall command, that they carry forth all things out of the house, before he go into it, and see whether it have the leprosy, lest all things become unclean that are in the house. And afterwards he shall go in to view the leprosy of the house.
and if on examination he finds the wal s of the house pitted with reddish or greenish depressionswhich appear to be eating away the wall,37 And if he see in the walls thereof as it were little dints, disfigured with paleness or redness, and lower than all the rest,
the priest wil then go out of the house, to the door, and shut it up for seven days.38 He shall go out of the door of the house, and forthwith shut it up seven days,
On the seventh day, the priest will come back and if on examination he finds that the infection hasspread over the walls of the house,39 And returning on the seventh day, he shall look upon it. If he find that the leprosy is spread,
he wil order the infected stones to be removed and thrown into some unclean place outside the town.40 He shall command, that the stones wherein the leprosy is, be taken out, and cast without the city into an unclean place:
He wil then have all the inside of the house scraped, and the plaster that comes off will be emptied inan unclean place outside the town.41 And that the house be scraped on the inside round about, and the dust of the scraping be scattered without the city into an unclean place:
The stones wil then be replaced with new ones and the house given a new coat of plaster.42 And that other stones be laid in the place of them that were taken away, and the house be plastered with other mortar.
'If the infection spreads again after the stones have been removed and the house scraped andreplastered,43 But if, after the stones be taken out, and the dust scraped off, and it be plastered with other earth,
the priest wil come and examine it. If he finds that the infection has spread, this means that there is acontagious disease in the house: it is unclean.44 The priest going in perceive that the leprosy is returned, and the walls full of spots, it is a lasting leprosy, and the house is unclean:
It must be pul ed down and the stones, woodwork and al the plaster be taken to an unclean placeoutside the town.45 And they shall destroy it forthwith, and shall cast the stones and timber thereof, and all the dust without the town into an unclean place.
'Anyone who enters the house while it is closed wil be unclean until evening.46 He that entereth into the house when it is shut, shall be unclean until evening,
Anyone who sleeps there wil wash his clothes. Anyone who eats there will wash his clothes.47 And he that sleepeth in it, and eateth any thing, shall wash his clothes.
But if the priest finds, when he comes to examine the infection, that it has not spread in the housesince it was plastered, he wil declare the house clean, for the infection is cured.48 But if the priest going in perceive that the leprosy is not spread in the house, after it was plastered again, he shall purify it, it being cured,
'As a sacrifice for the defilement of the house, he wil take two birds, some cedar wood, scarletmaterial and hyssop.49 And for the purification thereof he shall take two sparrows, and cedar wood, and scarlet, and hyssop:
He wil slaughter one of the birds in an earthenware pot over running water.50 And having immolated one sparrow In an earthen vessel over living waters,
He wil then take the cedar wood, the hyssop, the scarlet material and the live bird, dip them into theblood of the slaughtered bird and into the running water and sprinkle the house seven times;51 He shall take the cedar wood, and the hyssop, and the scarlet, and the living sparrow, and shall dip all in the blood of the sparrow that is immolated, and in the living water, and he shall sprinkle the house seven times:
and after offering the sacrifice for the defilement of the house with the blood of the bird, the runningwater, the live bird, the cedar wood, the hyssop and the scarlet material,52 And shall purify it as well with the blood of the sparrow, as with the living water, and with the living sparrow, and with the cedar wood, and the hyssop, and the scarlet.
he wil set the live bird free to fly out of the town into the countryside. Once the rite of expiation hasbeen performed for the house in this way it wil be clean.53 And when he hath let go the sparrow to fly freely away into the field, he shall pray for the house, and it shall be rightly cleansed.
'Such is the law governing all kinds of skin-disease and tinea,54 This is the law of every kind of leprosy and stroke.
diseases of clothing and houses,55 Of the leprosy of garments and houses,
swel ings, scabs and spots. It defines the occasions when things are unclean and when clean.56 Of a scar and of blisters breaking out, of a shining spot, and when the colours are diversely changed:
Such is the law on skin-diseases.'57 That it may be known when a thing is clean or unclean.
