NEW JERUSALEMNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
Yahweh spoke to Moses and said:1 The LORD said to Moses,
'This is the law to be applied on the day of the purification of someone who has suffered from acontagious skin-disease. Such a person wil be taken to the priest,2 "This is the law for the victim of leprosy at the time of his purification. He shall be brought to the priest,
and the priest wil go outside the camp. If he finds on examination that the person has recovered fromthe disease,3 who is to go outside the camp to examine him. If the priest finds that the sore of leprosy has healed in the leper,
he wil order the fol owing to be brought for his purification: two live birds that are clean, some cedar wood, scarlet material and hyssop.4 he shall order the man who is to be purified, to get two live, clean birds, as well as some cedar wood, scarlet yarn, and hyssop.
He will then order one of the birds to be slaughtered in an earthenware pot over running water.5 The priest shall then order him to slay one of the birds over an earthen vessel with spring water in it.
He will then take the live bird, the cedar wood, the scarlet material and the hyssop and dip all this(including the live bird) into the blood of the bird slaughtered over running water.6 Taking the living bird with the cedar wood, the scarlet yarn and the hyssop, the priest shall dip them all in the blood of the bird that was slain over the spring water,
He will then sprinkle the person to be purified of the skin-disease seven times, and having declared theperson clean, wil set the live bird free to fly off into the countryside.7 and then sprinkle seven times the man to be purified from his leprosy. When he has thus purified him, he shall let the living bird fly away over the countryside.
The person who is being purified will then wash al clothing, shave off al hair, and wash, and wil thenbe clean. After this he will return to the camp, although he wil remain outside his tent for seven days.8 The man being purified shall then wash his garments and shave off all his hair and bathe in water; only when he is thus made clean may he come inside the camp; but he shall still remain outside his tent for seven days.
On the seventh day he wil shave off all his hair-head, beard and eyebrows; he wil shave off al hishair. After washing his clothing and his body he wil be clean.9 On the seventh day he shall again shave off all the hair of his head, his beard, his eyebrows, and any other hair he may have, and also wash his garments and bathe his body in water; and so he will be clean.
'On the eighth day he wil take two unblemished lambs, an unblemished ewe one year old, three-tenths of wheaten flour mixed with oil for the cereal offering, and one log of oil.10 "On the eighth day he shall take two unblemished male lambs, one unblemished yearling ewe lamb, three tenths of an ephah of fine flour mixed with oil for a cereal offering, and one log of oil.
The priest who is performing the purification will place the person who is being purified, with all hisofferings, at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, before Yahweh.11 The priest who performs the purification ceremony shall place the man who is being purified, as well as all these offerings, before the LORD at the entrance of the meeting tent.
He wil then take one of the lambs and offer it as a sacrifice of reparation, as also the log of oil. Withthese he wil make the gesture of offering before Yahweh.12 Taking one of the male lambs, the priest shall present it as a guilt offering, along with the log of oil, waving them as a wave offering before the LORD.
He wil then slaughter the lamb on that spot inside the holy place where the victims for the sacrificefor sin and for the burnt offering are slaughtered. This reparatory offering, like the sacrifice for sin, wil revert tothe priest: it is especially holy.13 (This lamb he shall slaughter in the sacred place where the sin offering and the holocaust are slaughtered; because, like the sin offering, the guilt offering belongs to the priest and is most sacred.)
The priest wil then take some blood of this sacrifice and put it on the lobe of the right ear, the thumbof the right hand, and the big toe of the right foot of the person who is being purified.14 Then the priest shall take some of the blood of the guilt offering and put it on the tip of the man's right ear, the thumb of his right hand, and the big toe of his right foot.
He wil then take the log of oil and pour a little into the hol ow of his left hand.15 The priest shall also take the log of oil and pour some of it into the palm of his own left hand;
He wil dip a finger of his right hand into the oil in the hollow of his left hand, and sprinkle the oil withhis finger seven times before Yahweh.16 then, dipping his right forefinger in it, he shall sprinkle it seven times before the LORD.
He wil then take some of the oil left in the hollow of his hand and put it on the lobe of the right ear,the thumb of the right hand, and the big toe of the right foot of the person being purified, in addition to the bloodof the sacrifice of reparation.17 Of the oil left in his hand the priest shall put some on the tip of the man's right ear, the thumb of his right hand, and the big toe of his right foot, over the blood of the guilt offering.
The rest of the oil in the hol ow of his hand he will put on the head of the person who is being purified. This is how the priest wil perform the rite of expiation for such a person before Yahweh.18 The rest of the oil in his hand the priest shall put on the head of the man being purified. Thus shall the priest make atonement for him before the LORD.
'The priest wil then offer the sacrifice for sin, and perform the rite of expiation for uncleanness for theperson who is being purified. After this, he wil slaughter the burnt offering19 Only after he has offered the sin offering in atonement for the man's uncleanness shall the priest slaughter the holocaust
and offer this and the cereal offering on the altar. So, when the priest has performed the rite ofexpiation for him the person wil be clean.20 and offer it, together with the cereal offering, on the altar before the LORD. When the priest has thus made atonement for him, the man will be clean.
'If he is poor and cannot afford al this, he need take only one lamb, the one for the sacrifice ofreparation, and this will be presented with the gesture of offering to perform the rite of expiation for him. And forthe cereal offering he wil only take one-tenth of wheaten flour mixed with oil, and the log of oil,21 "If a man is poor and cannot afford so much, he shall take one male lamb for a guilt offering, to be used as a wave offering in atonement for himself, one tenth of an ephah of fine flour mixed with oil for a cereal offering, a log of oil,
and two turtledoves or two young pigeons, whichever he can afford, one for a sacrifice for sin and theother for the burnt offering.22 and two turtledoves or pigeons, which he can more easily afford, the one as a sin offering and the other as a holocaust.
He wil bring these on the eighth day to the priest at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting beforeYahweh, for his purification.23 On the eighth day of his purification he shall bring them to the priest, at the entrance of the meeting tent before the LORD.
The priest wil take the lamb for the sacrifice of reparation and the log of oil, and present them beforeYahweh with the gesture of offering.24 Taking the guilt-offering lamb, along with the log of oil, the priest shall wave them as a wave offering before the LORD.
He wil then slaughter the lamb for the sacrifice of reparation, take some of its blood and put it on thelobe of the right ear, the thumb of the right hand and the big toe of the right foot of the person who is beingpurified.25 When he has slaughtered the guilt-offering lamb, he shall take some of its blood, and put it on the tip of the right ear of the man being purified, on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot.
He wil pour the oil into the hol ow of his left hand,26 The priest shall then pour some of the oil into the palm of his own left hand
and with his finger sprinkle the oil in the hol ow of his left hand seven times before Yahweh.27 and with his right forefinger sprinkle it seven times before the LORD.
He wil then put some of the oil on the lobe of the right ear, the thumb of the right hand and the bigtoe of the right foot of the person who is being purified, as he did with the blood of the sacrifice of reparation.28 Some of the oil in his hand the priest shall also put on the tip of the man's right ear, the thumb of his right hand, and the big toe of his right foot, over the blood of the guilt offering.
The remainder of the oil in the hol ow of his hand he wil put on the head of the person who is beingpurified, thus performing the rite of expiation for him before Yahweh.29 The rest of the oil in his hand the priest shall put on the man's head. Thus shall he make atonement for him before the LORD.
Of the two turtledoves or two young pigeons -- whatever he has been able to afford -- he wil offer30 Then, of the turtledoves or pigeons, such as the man can afford,
a sacrifice for sin with one, and with the other a burnt offering with a cereal offering -- whatever hehas been able to afford. This is how the priest will perform before Yahweh the rite of expiation for the person whois being purified.31 the priest shall offer up one as a sin offering and the other as a holocaust, along with the cereal offering. Thus shall the priest make atonement before the LORD for the man who is to be purified.
'Such is the law concerning someone with a contagious skin-disease who cannot afford the means ofpurification.'32 This is the law for one afflicted with leprosy who has insufficient means for his purification."
Yahweh spoke to Moses and Aaron and said:33 The LORD said to Moses and Aaron,
'When you reach Canaan, which I am giving you as your possession, if I infect a house with adisease in the country which you are to possess,34 "When you come into the land of Canaan, which I am giving you to possess, if I put a leprous infection on any house of the land you occupy,
the owner wil come and inform the priest and say, "I have seen something like a skin-disease in thehouse."35 the owner of the house shall come and report to the priest, 'It looks to me as if my house were infected.'
The priest wil order the house to be emptied before he goes to examine the infection, or everything inthe house wil become unclean; after which, the priest wil go inside and examine the house;36 The priest shall then order the house to be cleared out before he goes in to examine the infection, lest everything in the house become unclean. Only after this is he to go in to examine the house.
and if on examination he finds the wal s of the house pitted with reddish or greenish depressionswhich appear to be eating away the wall,37 If the priest, on examining it, finds that the infection on the walls of the house consists of greenish or reddish depressions which seem to go deeper than the surface of the wall,
the priest wil then go out of the house, to the door, and shut it up for seven days.38 he shall close the door of the house behind him and quarantine the house for seven days.
On the seventh day, the priest will come back and if on examination he finds that the infection hasspread over the walls of the house,39 On the seventh day the priest shall return to examine the house again. If he finds that the infection has spread on the walls,
he wil order the infected stones to be removed and thrown into some unclean place outside the town.40 he shall order the infected stones to be pulled out and cast in an unclean place outside the city.
He wil then have all the inside of the house scraped, and the plaster that comes off will be emptied inan unclean place outside the town.41 The whole inside of the house shall then be scraped, and the mortar that has been scraped off shall be dumped in an unclean place outside the city.
The stones wil then be replaced with new ones and the house given a new coat of plaster.42 Then new stones shall be brought and put in the place of the old stones, and new mortar shall be made and plastered on the house.
'If the infection spreads again after the stones have been removed and the house scraped andreplastered,43 "If the infection breaks out once more after the stones have been pulled out and the house has been scraped and replastered,
the priest wil come and examine it. If he finds that the infection has spread, this means that there is acontagious disease in the house: it is unclean.44 the priest shall come again; and if he finds that the infection has spread in the house, it is corrosive leprosy, and the house is unclean.
It must be pul ed down and the stones, woodwork and al the plaster be taken to an unclean placeoutside the town.45 It shall be pulled down, and all its stones, beams and mortar shall be hauled away to an unclean place outside the city.
'Anyone who enters the house while it is closed wil be unclean until evening.46 Whoever enters a house while it is quarantined shall be unclean until evening.
Anyone who sleeps there wil wash his clothes. Anyone who eats there will wash his clothes.47 Whoever sleeps or eats in such a house shall also wash his garments.
But if the priest finds, when he comes to examine the infection, that it has not spread in the housesince it was plastered, he wil declare the house clean, for the infection is cured.48 If the priest finds, when he comes to examine the house, that the infection has in fact not spread after the plastering, he shall declare the house clean, since the infection has been healed.
'As a sacrifice for the defilement of the house, he wil take two birds, some cedar wood, scarletmaterial and hyssop.49 To purify the house, he shall take two birds, as well as cedar wood, scarlet yarn, and hyssop.
He wil slaughter one of the birds in an earthenware pot over running water.50 One of the birds he shall slay over an earthen vessel with spring water in it.
He wil then take the cedar wood, the hyssop, the scarlet material and the live bird, dip them into theblood of the slaughtered bird and into the running water and sprinkle the house seven times;51 Then, taking the cedar wood, the hyssop and the scarlet yarn, together with the living bird, he shall dip them all in the blood of the slain bird and the spring water, and sprinkle the house seven times.
and after offering the sacrifice for the defilement of the house with the blood of the bird, the runningwater, the live bird, the cedar wood, the hyssop and the scarlet material,52 Thus shall he purify the house with the bird's blood and the spring water, along with the living bird, the cedar wood, the hyssop, and the scarlet yarn.
he wil set the live bird free to fly out of the town into the countryside. Once the rite of expiation hasbeen performed for the house in this way it wil be clean.53 He shall then let the living bird fly away over the countryside outside the city. When he has thus made atonement for it, the house will be clean.
'Such is the law governing all kinds of skin-disease and tinea,54 "This is the law for every kind of human leprosy and scall,
diseases of clothing and houses,55 for leprosy of garments and houses,
swel ings, scabs and spots. It defines the occasions when things are unclean and when clean.56 as well as for scabs, pustules and blotches,
Such is the law on skin-diseases.'57 so that it may be manifest when there is a state of uncleanness and when a state of cleanness. This is the law for leprosy."
