NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
Yahweh spoke to Moses and said:1 Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen dicens:
'This is the law to be applied on the day of the purification of someone who has suffered from acontagious skin-disease. Such a person wil be taken to the priest,2 “ Hic est ri tus leprosi, quando mundandus est: adducetur ad sacerdotem,
and the priest wil go outside the camp. If he finds on examination that the person has recovered fromthe disease,3 qui egressus e castris, cum invenerit lepram esse sanatam,
he wil order the fol owing to be brought for his purification: two live birds that are clean, some cedar wood, scarlet material and hyssop.4 praecipiet, ut sumant pro eo, qui purificatur, duas aves vivas, mundas et lignum cedrinum vermiculumque et hyssopum.
He will then order one of the birds to be slaughtered in an earthenware pot over running water.5 Et unam ex avibus immolari iubebit in vase fictili super aquas viventes.
He will then take the live bird, the cedar wood, the scarlet material and the hyssop and dip all this(including the live bird) into the blood of the bird slaughtered over running water.6 Aliam autem vivam cum ligno cedrino et cocco et hyssopo tinguet in sanguine avis super aquas viventes immolatae,
He will then sprinkle the person to be purified of the skin-disease seven times, and having declared theperson clean, wil set the live bird free to fly off into the countryside.7 quo asperget illum, qui a lepra mundandus est, septies, ut iure purgetur; et dimittet avem vivam, ut in agrum avolet.
The person who is being purified will then wash al clothing, shave off al hair, and wash, and wil thenbe clean. After this he will return to the camp, although he wil remain outside his tent for seven days.8 Cumque laverit homo vestimenta sua, radet omnes pilos corporis, et lavabitur aqua; purificatusque ingredietur castra, ita dumtaxat ut maneat extra tabernaculum suum septem diebus.
On the seventh day he wil shave off all his hair-head, beard and eyebrows; he wil shave off al hishair. After washing his clothing and his body he wil be clean.9 Et die septimo radet capillos capitis barbamque et supercilia ac totius corporis pilos et lavabit vestimenta carnemque suam aqua, et mundus erit.
'On the eighth day he wil take two unblemished lambs, an unblemished ewe one year old, three-tenths of wheaten flour mixed with oil for the cereal offering, and one log of oil.10 Die octavo assumet duos agnos immaculatos et ovem anniculam absque macula et tres decimas ephi similae in sacrificium, quae conspersa sit oleo, et log olei.
The priest who is performing the purification will place the person who is being purified, with all hisofferings, at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, before Yahweh.11 Cumque sacerdos purificans hominem statuerit eum et haec omnia coram Domino in ostio tabernaculi conventus,
He wil then take one of the lambs and offer it as a sacrifice of reparation, as also the log of oil. Withthese he wil make the gesture of offering before Yahweh.12 tollet agnum unum et offeret eum in sacrificium pro delicto, oleique log et, elevatis ante Dominum omnibus,
He wil then slaughter the lamb on that spot inside the holy place where the victims for the sacrificefor sin and for the burnt offering are slaughtered. This reparatory offering, like the sacrifice for sin, wil revert tothe priest: it is especially holy.13 immolabit agnum, ubi immolari solet hostia pro peccato et holocaustum, id est in loco sancto. Sicut enim pro peccato ita et pro delicto ad sacerdotem pertinet sacrificium: sanctum sanctorum est.
The priest wil then take some blood of this sacrifice and put it on the lobe of the right ear, the thumbof the right hand, and the big toe of the right foot of the person who is being purified.14 Assumensque sacerdos de sanguine hostiae pro delicto ponet super extremum auriculae dextrae eius, qui mundatur, et super pollices manus dextrae et pedis;
He wil then take the log of oil and pour a little into the hol ow of his left hand.15 et de olei log mittet in manum suam sinistram
He wil dip a finger of his right hand into the oil in the hollow of his left hand, and sprinkle the oil withhis finger seven times before Yahweh.16 tinguetque digitum dextrum in eo et asperget septies coram Domino.
He wil then take some of the oil left in the hollow of his hand and put it on the lobe of the right ear,the thumb of the right hand, and the big toe of the right foot of the person being purified, in addition to the bloodof the sacrifice of reparation.17 Quod autem reliquum est olei in laeva manu, fundet super extremum auriculae dextrae eius, qui mundatur, et super pollices manus ac pedis dextri et super sanguinem sacrificii pro delicto
The rest of the oil in the hol ow of his hand he will put on the head of the person who is being purified.This is how the priest wil perform the rite of expiation for such a person before Yahweh.18 et super caput eius, qui mundatur; expiabitque eum coram Domino
'The priest wil then offer the sacrifice for sin, and perform the rite of expiation for uncleanness for theperson who is being purified. After this, he wil slaughter the burnt offering19 et faciet sacrificium pro peccato. Tunc immolabit holocaustum
and offer this and the cereal offering on the altar. So, when the priest has performed the rite ofexpiation for him the person wil be clean.20 et ponet illud in altari cum sacrificio similae, et homo rite mundabitur.
'If he is poor and cannot afford al this, he need take only one lamb, the one for the sacrifice ofreparation, and this will be presented with the gesture of offering to perform the rite of expiation for him. And forthe cereal offering he wil only take one-tenth of wheaten flour mixed with oil, and the log of oil,21 Quod si pauper est, et non potest manus eius invenire, quae dicta sunt, assumet agnum pro delicto ad elationem, ut expiet eum sacerdos, decimamque partem similae conspersae oleo in sacrificium et olei log
and two turtledoves or two young pigeons, whichever he can afford, one for a sacrifice for sin and theother for the burnt offering.22 duosque turtures sive duos pullos columbae, quos manus eius invenire poterit, unum pro peccato et alterum in holocaustum.
He wil bring these on the eighth day to the priest at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting beforeYahweh, for his purification.23 Offeretque ea die octavo purificationis suae sacerdoti ad ostium tabernaculi conventus coram Domino.
The priest wil take the lamb for the sacrifice of reparation and the log of oil, and present them beforeYahweh with the gesture of offering.24 Qui suscipiens agnum pro delicto et log olei levabit simul coram Domino;
He wil then slaughter the lamb for the sacrifice of reparation, take some of its blood and put it on thelobe of the right ear, the thumb of the right hand and the big toe of the right foot of the person who is beingpurified.25 immolatoque agno pro delicto, de sanguine eius ponet super extremum auriculae dextrae illius, qui mundatur, et super pollices manus eius ac pedis dextri;
He wil pour the oil into the hol ow of his left hand,26 olei vero partem mittet in manum suam sinistram.
and with his finger sprinkle the oil in the hol ow of his left hand seven times before Yahweh.27 In quo tinguens digitum dextrae manus asperget septies coram Domino;
He wil then put some of the oil on the lobe of the right ear, the thumb of the right hand and the bigtoe of the right foot of the person who is being purified, as he did with the blood of the sacrifice of reparation.28 tangetque extremum auriculae dextrae illius, qui mundatur, et pollices manus ac pedis dextri super locum sanguinis, qui effusus est pro delicto.
The remainder of the oil in the hol ow of his hand he wil put on the head of the person who is beingpurified, thus performing the rite of expiation for him before Yahweh.29 Reliquam autem partem olei, quae est in sinistra manu, mittet super caput hominis, qui purificatur, in expiationem eius coram Domino;
Of the two turtledoves or two young pigeons -- whatever he has been able to afford -- he wil offer30 et turtures sive pullos columbae, quos manus illius invenerit, offeret,
a sacrifice for sin with one, and with the other a burnt offering with a cereal offering -- whatever hehas been able to afford. This is how the priest will perform before Yahweh the rite of expiation for the person whois being purified.31 unum pro delicto et alterum in holocaustum cum sacrificio similae, et sic expiabit eum sacerdos coram Domino.
'Such is the law concerning someone with a contagious skin-disease who cannot afford the means ofpurification.'32 Hoc est sacrificium leprosi, qui habere non potest omnia in emundationem sui ”.
Yahweh spoke to Moses and Aaron and said:33 Locutus est Dominus ad Moysen et Aaron dicens:
'When you reach Canaan, which I am giving you as your possession, if I infect a house with adisease in the country which you are to possess,34 “ Cum ingressi fueritis terram Chanaan, quam ego dabo vobis in possessionem, si fuerit plaga leprae in aedibus terrae possessionis vestrae,
the owner wil come and inform the priest and say, "I have seen something like a skin-disease in thehouse."35 ibit, cuius est domus, nuntians sacerdoti et dicet: "Quasi plaga videtur mihi esse in domo mea".
The priest wil order the house to be emptied before he goes to examine the infection, or everything inthe house wil become unclean; after which, the priest wil go inside and examine the house;36 At ille praecipiet, ut efferant universa de domo, priusquam ingrediatur eam, et videat plagam, ne immunda fiant omnia, quae in domo sunt. Intrabitque postea, ut consideret domum;
and if on examination he finds the wal s of the house pitted with reddish or greenish depressionswhich appear to be eating away the wall,37 et, cum viderit in parietibus illius quasi valliculas pallore sive rubore deformes et humiliores superficie reliqua,
the priest wil then go out of the house, to the door, and shut it up for seven days.38 egredietur ostium domus et statim claudet eam septem diebus.
On the seventh day, the priest will come back and if on examination he finds that the infection hasspread over the walls of the house,39 Reversusque die septimo considerabit eam; si invenerit crevisse plagam,
he wil order the infected stones to be removed and thrown into some unclean place outside the town.40 iubebit erui lapides, in quibus plaga est, et proici eos extra civitatem in loco immundo;
He wil then have all the inside of the house scraped, and the plaster that comes off will be emptied inan unclean place outside the town.41 domum autem ipsam radi intrinsecus per circuitum et spargi pulverem rasurae extra urbem in locum immundum
The stones wil then be replaced with new ones and the house given a new coat of plaster.42 lapidesque alios reponi pro his, qui ablati fuerint, et luto alio liniri domum.
'If the infection spreads again after the stones have been removed and the house scraped andreplastered,43 Sin autem plaga rursum effloruerit in domo, postquam eruti sunt lapides et pulvis erasus et alia terra lita,
the priest wil come and examine it. If he finds that the infection has spread, this means that there is acontagious disease in the house: it is unclean.44 et ingressus sacerdos viderit crevisse plagam in domo: lepra est maligna et domus immunda.
It must be pul ed down and the stones, woodwork and al the plaster be taken to an unclean placeoutside the town.45 Quam statim destruent et lapides eius ac ligna atque universum pulverem domus proicient extra oppidum in loco immundo.
'Anyone who enters the house while it is closed wil be unclean until evening.46 Qui intraverit domum, quando clausa est, immundus erit usque ad vesperum;
Anyone who sleeps there wil wash his clothes. Anyone who eats there will wash his clothes.47 et, qui dormierit in ea vel comederit quippiam, lavabit vestimenta sua.
But if the priest finds, when he comes to examine the infection, that it has not spread in the housesince it was plastered, he wil declare the house clean, for the infection is cured.48 Quod si introiens sacerdos viderit plagam non crevisse in domo, postquam denuo lita est, mundam eam esse decernet, reddita sanitate.
'As a sacrifice for the defilement of the house, he wil take two birds, some cedar wood, scarletmaterial and hyssop.49 Et in purificationem eius sumet duas aves lignumque cedrinum et vermiculum atque hyssopum
He wil slaughter one of the birds in an earthenware pot over running water.50 et, immolata una avi in vase fictili super aquas vivas,
He wil then take the cedar wood, the hyssop, the scarlet material and the live bird, dip them into theblood of the slaughtered bird and into the running water and sprinkle the house seven times;51 tollet lignum cedrinum et hyssopum et coccum et avem vivam et intinguet omnia in sanguine avis immolatae atque in aquis viventibus et asperget domum septies;
and after offering the sacrifice for the defilement of the house with the blood of the bird, the runningwater, the live bird, the cedar wood, the hyssop and the scarlet material,52 purificabitque eam tam in sanguine avis quam in aquis viventibus et in avi viva lignoque cedrino et hyssopo atque vermiculo;
he wil set the live bird free to fly out of the town into the countryside. Once the rite of expiation hasbeen performed for the house in this way it wil be clean.53 cumque dimiserit avem avolare extra urbem in agrum libere, expiabit domum, et erit munda.
'Such is the law governing all kinds of skin-disease and tinea,54 Ista est lex omnis leprae et scabiei,
diseases of clothing and houses,55 leprae vestium et domorum,
swel ings, scabs and spots. It defines the occasions when things are unclean and when clean.56 tumoris et pustulae et lucentis maculae,
Such is the law on skin-diseases.'57 ut possit sciri quo tempore immundum quid vel mundum sit ”.
