NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
Yahweh spoke to Moses and Aaron and said to them,1 Locutus est Dominus ad Moysen et Aaron dicens:
'Speak to the Israelites and say: "Of al animals living on land these are the creatures you may eat:2 “ Dicite filiis Israel: Haec sunt animalia, quae comedere debetis de cunctis animantibus terrae.
"You may eat any animal that has a cloven hoof, divided into two parts, and that is a ruminant.3 Omne, quod habet plene divisam ungulam et ruminat in pecoribus, comedetis.
The fol owing, which either chew the cud or have a cloven hoof, are the ones that you may not eat: youwil regard the camel as unclean, because though it is ruminant, it does not have a cloven hoof;4 Haec autem non comedetis ex ruminantibus vel dividentibus ungulam: camelum, quia ruminat quidem, sed non dividit ungulam, inter immunda reputabis;
you wil regard the coney as unclean, because though it is ruminant, it does not have a cloven hoof;5 hyracem, qui ruminat ungulamque non dividit, immundus est;
you wil regard the hare as unclean, because though it is ruminant, it does not have a cloven hoof;6 leporem quoque, nam et ipse ruminat, sed ungulam non dividit;
you wil regard the pig as unclean, because though it has a cloven hoof, divided into two parts, it is nota ruminant.7 et suem, qui, cum ungulam plene dividat, non ruminat.
You will not eat the meat of these or touch their dead bodies; you wil regard them as unclean.8 Horum carnibus non vescemini nec cadavera contingetis, quia immunda sunt vobis.
"Of al that lives in water, these you may eat: "Anything that has fins and scales, and lives in the water, whether in sea or river, you may eat.9 Haec sunt, quae gignuntur in aquis et vesci licitum est: omne, quod habet pinnulas et squamas, tam in mari quam in fluminibus et torrentibus, comedetis.
But anything in sea or river that does not have fins and scales, of al the smal water-creatures and althe living things found there, you wil regard as detestable.10 Quidquid autem pinnulas et squamas non habet, reptilium vel quorumlibet aliorum animalium, quae in aquis moventur, abominabile vobis
You wil regard them as detestable; you must not eat their meat and you wil regard their carcases asdetestable.11 et execrandum erit; carnes eorum non comedetis et morticina vitabitis.
Anything that lives in water, but not having fins and scales, you wil regard as detestable.12 Cuncta, quae non habent pinnulas et squamas in aquis, polluta erunt vobis.
"Of the birds these are the ones that you wil regard as detestable; they may not be eaten, they aredetestable for eating: "The tawny vulture, the griffon, the osprey,13 Haec sunt, quae de avibus comedere non debetis, et vitanda sunt vobis: aquilam et grypem et haliaeetum,
the kite, the various kinds of buzzard,14 milvum ac vulturem iuxta genus suum
all kinds of raven,15 et omne corvini generis,
the ostrich, the screech owl, the seagul , the various kinds of hawk,16 struthionem et noctuam et larum et accipitrem iuxta genus suum,
horned owl, night owl, cormorant, barn owl,17 bubonem et mergulum et ibin,
ibis, pelican, white vulture,18 cycnum et nyctocoracem et porphyrionem,
stork, the various kinds of heron, the hoopoe and the bat.19 erodionem et charadrion iuxta genus suum, upupam quoque et vespertilionem.
"Al winged insects moving on four feet you wil regard as detestable for eating.20 Omne de volucribus, quod reptat super quattuor pedes, abominabile erit vobis.
Of al these winged insects you may eat only the fol owing: those with the sort of legs above their feetwhich enable them to leap over the ground.21 Quidquid autem ambulat quidem super quattuor pedes, sed habet longiora retro crura, per quae salit super terram,
These are the ones you may eat: the various kinds of migratory locust, the various kinds of solhamlocust, hargol locust and hagab locust.22 comedere debetis; ut est bruchus in genere suo et attacus atque ophiomachus ac locusta, singula iuxta genus suum.
But al other winged insects on four feet you wil regard as detestable for eating.23 Quidquid autem ex volucribus reptantibus quattuor tantum habet pedes, execrabile erit vobis.
"By the fol owing you wil be made unclean. Anyone who touches the carcase of one wil be uncleanuntil evening.24 Et quicumque morticina eorum tetigerit, polluetur et erit immundus usque ad vesperum.
Anyone who picks up their carcases must wash his clothing and wil be unclean until evening.25 Et si necesse fuerit, ut portet quippiam horum mortuum, lavabit vestimenta sua et immundus erit usque ad solis occasum.
Animals that have hoofs, but not cloven, and that are not ruminant, you wil regard as unclean;anyone who touches them will be unclean.26 Omne animal, quod habet quidem ungulam, sed non dividit eam nec ruminat, immundum erit vobis; et, qui tetigerit illud, contaminabitur.
Those four-footed animals which walk on the flat of their paws you wil regard as unclean; anyonewho touches their carcases wil be unclean until evening,27 Quod ambulat super plantas pedum ex cunctis animantibus, quae incedunt quadrupedia, immundum erit; qui tetigerit morticina eorum, polluetur usque ad vesperum.
and anyone who picks up their carcases must wash his clothing and wil be unclean until evening.You will regard them as unclean.28 Et, qui portaverit huiuscemodi cadavera, lavabit vestimenta sua et immundus erit usque ad vesperum; quia omnia haec immunda sunt vobis.
"Of the smal creatures which crawl along the ground, these are the ones which you wil regard asunclean: the mole, the rat, the various kinds of lizard:29 Haec quoque inter polluta reputabuntur de his, quae reptant in terra: mustela et mus et lacerta iuxta genus suum,
gecko, koah, letaah, chameleon and tinshamet.30 mygale et testudo et stellio et talpa et chamaeleon:
"Of al the smal creatures, these are the animals which you must regard as disgusting. Anyone whotouches them when they are dead will be unclean until evening.31 omnia haec immunda sunt.
Qui tetigerit morticina eorum, immundus erit usque ad vesperum;
"Any object on which one of these creatures fal s when it is dead becomes unclean: wooden utensil,clothing, skin, sacking, any utensil whatever. It must be immersed in water and wil remain unclean until evening:then it wil be clean.32 et super quod ceciderit quidquam de morticinis eorum, polluetur tam vas ligneum et vestimentum quam pelles et cilicia, et in quocumque fit opus; tinguentur aqua et polluta erunt usque ad vesperum et postea munda.
If the creature fal s into an earthenware vessel, the vessel must be broken; whatever the vesselcontains is unclean.33 Vas autem fictile, in quo horum quidquam intro ceciderit, polluetur et frangendum est.
Any edible food wil be unclean if the water touches it; any drinkable liquid will be unclean, no matterwhat its container.34 Omnis cibus, quem comedetis, si fusa fuerit exinde super eum aqua, immundus erit; et omne liquens, quod bibitur de tali vase, immundum erit.
Anything on which the carcase of such a creature may fal wil be unclean: be it oven or stove, it mustbe destroyed; for they are unclean and you wil regard them as unclean35 Et quidquid de morticinis istiusmodi ceciderit super illud, immundum erit; sive clibani sive chytropodes destruentur: immundi sunt et immundi erunt vobis.
(although springs, wel s and stretches of water wil remain clean); anyone who touches one of theircarcases wil be unclean.36 Fontes tamen et cisternae et omnis aquarum congregatio munda erit. Qui vero morticinum eorum tetigerit, polluetur.
If one of their carcases fal s on any kind of seed, the seed will remain clean;37 Si ceciderint super sementem, non polluent eam;
but if the seed has been moistened and one of their carcases fal s on it, you wil regard it as unclean.38 sin autem quispiam aqua sementem perfuderit, et postea morticinis tacta fuerit, immunda erit vobis.
"If one of the animals that you use as food dies, anyone who touches the carcase wil be unclean untilevening;39 Si mortuum fuerit animal, quod licet vobis comedere, qui cadaver eius tetigerit, immundus erit usque ad vesperum;
anyone who eats any of the carcase must wash his clothing and will remain unclean until evening;anyone who picks up the carcase must wash his clothing and wil remain unclean until evening.40 et, qui comederit ex eo quippiam sive portaverit cadaver eius, lavabit vestimenta sua et immundus erit usque ad vesperum.
"Any creature that swarms on the ground is detestable for eating; it must not be eaten.41 Omne, quod reptat super terram, abominabile erit nec assumetur in cibum.
Anything that moves on its bel y, anything that moves on four legs or more -- in short all the creaturesthat swarm on the ground -- you will not eat, since they are detestable.42 Quidquid super pectus et quidquid quadrupes graditur, vel multos habet pedes sive per humum trahitur, non comedetis, quia abominabile est.
Do not make yourselves detestable with al these swarming creatures; do not defile yourselves withthem, do not be defiled by them.43 Nolite contaminare animas vestras nec tangatis quidquam eorum, ne immundi sitis.
For it is I, Yahweh, who am your God. You have been sanctified and have become holy because I amholy: do not defile yourselves with all these creatures that swarm on the ground.44 Ego enim sum Dominus Deus vester; sanctificamini et sancti estote, quoniam et ego sanctus sum. Ne polluatis animas vestras in omni reptili, quod movetur super terram.
Yes, it is I, Yahweh, who brought you out of Egypt to be your God: you must therefore be holybecause I am holy." '45 Ego enim sum Dominus, qui eduxi vos de terra Aegypti, ut essem vobis in Deum: sancti eritis, quia et ego sanctus sum.
Such is the law concerning animals, birds, al living creatures that move in water and al creaturesthat swarm on the ground.46 Ista est lex animantium et volucrum et omnis animae viventis, quae movetur in aqua et reptat in terra,
Its purpose is to distinguish the clean from the unclean, the creatures that may be eaten from thosethat may not be eaten.47 ut differentias noveritis mundi et immundi, et sciatis quid comedere et quid respuere debeatis ”.
