Yahweh spoke to Moses and Aaron and said to them,1 The LORD said to Moses and Aaron,
'Speak to the Israelites and say: "Of al animals living on land these are the creatures you may eat:2 "Speak to the Israelites and tell them: Of all land animals these are the ones you may eat:
"You may eat any animal that has a cloven hoof, divided into two parts, and that is a ruminant.3 any animal that has hoofs you may eat, provided it is cloven-footed and chews the cud.
The fol owing, which either chew the cud or have a cloven hoof, are the ones that you may not eat: youwil regard the camel as unclean, because though it is ruminant, it does not have a cloven hoof;4 But you shall not eat any of the following that only chew the cud or only have hoofs: the camel, which indeed chews the cud, but does not have hoofs and is therefore unclean for you;
you wil regard the coney as unclean, because though it is ruminant, it does not have a cloven hoof;5 the rock badger, which indeed chews the cud, but does not have hoofs and is therefore unclean for you;
you wil regard the hare as unclean, because though it is ruminant, it does not have a cloven hoof;6 the hare, which indeed chews the cud, but does not have hoofs and is therefore unclean for you; and the pig,
you wil regard the pig as unclean, because though it has a cloven hoof, divided into two parts, it is nota ruminant.7 which does indeed have hoofs and is cloven-footed, but does not chew the cud and is therefore unclean for you.
You will not eat the meat of these or touch their dead bodies; you wil regard them as unclean.8 Their flesh you shall not eat, and their dead bodies you shall not touch; they are unclean for you.
"Of al that lives in water, these you may eat: "Anything that has fins and scales, and lives in the water, whether in sea or river, you may eat.9 "Of the various creatures that live in the water, you may eat the following: whatever in the seas or in river waters has both fins and scales you may eat.
But anything in sea or river that does not have fins and scales, of al the smal water-creatures and althe living things found there, you wil regard as detestable.10 But of the various creatures that crawl or swim in the water, whether in the sea or in the rivers, all those that lack either fins or scales are loathsome for you,
You wil regard them as detestable; you must not eat their meat and you wil regard their carcases asdetestable.11 and you shall treat them as loathsome. Their flesh you shall not eat, and their dead bodies you shall loathe.
Anything that lives in water, but not having fins and scales, you wil regard as detestable.12 Every water creature that lacks fins or scales is loathsome for you.
"Of the birds these are the ones that you wil regard as detestable; they may not be eaten, they aredetestable for eating: "The tawny vulture, the griffon, the osprey,13 "Of the birds, these you shall loathe and, as loathsome, they shall not be eaten: the eagle, the vulture, the osprey,
the kite, the various kinds of buzzard,14 the kite, the various species of falcons,
all kinds of raven,15 the various species of crows,
the ostrich, the screech owl, the seagul , the various kinds of hawk,16 the ostrich, the nightjar, the gull, the various species of hawks,

ibis, pelican, white vulture,18 the barn owl, the desert owl, the buzzard,
stork, the various kinds of heron, the hoopoe and the bat.19 the stork, the various species of herons, the hoopoe, and the bat.
"Al winged insects moving on four feet you wil regard as detestable for eating.20 "The various winged insects that walk on all fours are loathsome for you.
Of al these winged insects you may eat only the fol owing: those with the sort of legs above their feetwhich enable them to leap over the ground.21 But of the various winged insects that walk on all fours you may eat those that have jointed legs for leaping on the ground;
These are the ones you may eat: the various kinds of migratory locust, the various kinds of solhamlocust, hargol locust and hagab locust.22 hence of these you may eat the following: the various kinds of locusts, the various kinds of grasshoppers, the various kinds of katydids, and the various kinds of crickets.
But al other winged insects on four feet you wil regard as detestable for eating.23 All other winged insects that have four legs are loathsome for you.
"By the fol owing you wil be made unclean. Anyone who touches the carcase of one wil be uncleanuntil evening.24 "Such is the uncleanness that you contract, that everyone who touches their dead bodies shall be unclean until evening,
Anyone who picks up their carcases must wash his clothing and wil be unclean until evening.25 and everyone who picks up any part of their dead bodies shall wash his garments and be unclean until evening.
Animals that have hoofs, but not cloven, and that are not ruminant, you wil regard as unclean;anyone who touches them will be unclean.26 All hoofed animals that are not cloven-footed or do not chew the cud are unclean for you; everyone who touches them becomes unclean.
Those four-footed animals which walk on the flat of their paws you wil regard as unclean; anyonewho touches their carcases wil be unclean until evening,27 Of the various quadrupeds, all those that walk on paws are unclean for you; everyone who touches their dead bodies shall be unclean until evening,
and anyone who picks up their carcases must wash his clothing and wil be unclean until evening.You will regard them as unclean.28 and everyone who picks up their dead bodies shall wash his garments and be unclean until evening. Such is their uncleanness for you.
"Of the smal creatures which crawl along the ground, these are the ones which you wil regard asunclean: the mole, the rat, the various kinds of lizard:29 "Of the creatures that swarm on the ground, the following are unclean for you: the rat, the mouse, the various kinds of lizards,
gecko, koah, letaah, chameleon and tinshamet.30 the gecko, the chameleon, the agama, the skink, and the mole.
"Of al the smal creatures, these are the animals which you must regard as disgusting. Anyone whotouches them when they are dead will be unclean until evening.31 Among the various swarming creatures, these are unclean for you. Everyone who touches them when they are dead shall be unclean until evening.
"Any object on which one of these creatures fal s when it is dead becomes unclean: wooden utensil,clothing, skin, sacking, any utensil whatever. It must be immersed in water and wil remain unclean until evening:then it wil be clean.32 Everything on which one of them falls when dead becomes unclean. Any such article that men use, whether it be an article of wood, cloth, leather or goat hair, must be put in water and remain unclean until evening, when it again becomes clean.
If the creature fal s into an earthenware vessel, the vessel must be broken; whatever the vesselcontains is unclean.33 Should any of these creatures fall into a clay vessel, everything in it becomes unclean, and the vessel itself you must break.
Any edible food wil be unclean if the water touches it; any drinkable liquid will be unclean, no matterwhat its container.34 Any solid food that was in contact with water, and any liquid that men drink, in any such vessel become unclean.
Anything on which the carcase of such a creature may fal wil be unclean: be it oven or stove, it mustbe destroyed; for they are unclean and you wil regard them as unclean35 Any object on which one of their dead bodies falls, becomes unclean; if it is an oven or a jar-stand, this must be broken to pieces; they are unclean and shall be treated as unclean by you.
(although springs, wel s and stretches of water wil remain clean); anyone who touches one of theircarcases wil be unclean.36 However, a spring or a cistern for collecting water remains clean; but whoever touches the dead body becomes unclean.
If one of their carcases fal s on any kind of seed, the seed will remain clean;37 Any sort of cultivated grain remains clean even though one of their dead bodies falls on it;
but if the seed has been moistened and one of their carcases fal s on it, you wil regard it as unclean.38 but if the grain has become moistened, it becomes unclean when one of these falls on it.
"If one of the animals that you use as food dies, anyone who touches the carcase wil be unclean untilevening;39 "When one of the animals that you could otherwise eat, dies of itself, anyone who touches its dead body shall be unclean until evening;
anyone who eats any of the carcase must wash his clothing and will remain unclean until evening;anyone who picks up the carcase must wash his clothing and wil remain unclean until evening.40 and anyone who eats of its dead body shall wash his garments and be unclean until evening; so also, anyone who removes its dead body shall wash his garments and be unclean until evening.
"Any creature that swarms on the ground is detestable for eating; it must not be eaten.41 "All the creatures that swarm on the ground are loathsome and shall not be eaten.
Anything that moves on its bel y, anything that moves on four legs or more -- in short all the creaturesthat swarm on the ground -- you will not eat, since they are detestable.42 Whether it crawls on its belly, goes on all fours, or has many legs, you shall eat no swarming creature: they are loathsome.
Do not make yourselves detestable with al these swarming creatures; do not defile yourselves withthem, do not be defiled by them.43 Do not make yourselves loathsome or unclean with any swarming creature through being contaminated by them.
For it is I, Yahweh, who am your God. You have been sanctified and have become holy because I amholy: do not defile yourselves with all these creatures that swarm on the ground.44 For I, the LORD, am your God; and you shall make and keep yourselves holy, because I am holy. You shall not make yourselves unclean, then, by any swarming creature that crawls on the ground.
Yes, it is I, Yahweh, who brought you out of Egypt to be your God: you must therefore be holybecause I am holy." '45 Since I, the LORD, brought you up from the land of Egypt that I might be your God, you shall be holy, because I am holy.
Such is the law concerning animals, birds, al living creatures that move in water and al creaturesthat swarm on the ground.46 "This is the law for animals and birds and for all the creatures that move about in the water or swarm on the ground,
Its purpose is to distinguish the clean from the unclean, the creatures that may be eaten from thosethat may not be eaten.47 that you may distinguish between the clean and the unclean, between creatures that may be eaten and those that may not be eaten."
