NEW JERUSALEMDOUAI-RHEIMS
Yahweh spoke to Moses and Aaron and said to them,1 And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying:
'Speak to the Israelites and say: "Of al animals living on land these are the creatures you may eat:2 Say to the children of Israel: These are the animals which you are to eat of all the living things of the earth.
"You may eat any animal that has a cloven hoof, divided into two parts, and that is a ruminant.3 Whatsoever hath the hoof divided, and cheweth the cud among the beasts, you shall eat.
The fol owing, which either chew the cud or have a cloven hoof, are the ones that you may not eat: youwil regard the camel as unclean, because though it is ruminant, it does not have a cloven hoof;4 But whatsoever cheweth indeed the cud, and hath a hoof, but divideth it not, as the camel, and others, that you shall not eat, but shall reckon it among the unclean.
you wil regard the coney as unclean, because though it is ruminant, it does not have a cloven hoof;5 The cherogrillus which cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof, is unclean.
you wil regard the hare as unclean, because though it is ruminant, it does not have a cloven hoof;6 The hare also: for that too cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof.
you wil regard the pig as unclean, because though it has a cloven hoof, divided into two parts, it is nota ruminant.7 And the swine, which, though it divideth the hoof, cheweth not the cud.
You will not eat the meat of these or touch their dead bodies; you wil regard them as unclean.8 The flesh of these you shall not eat, nor shall you touch their carcasses, because they are unclean to you.
"Of al that lives in water, these you may eat: "Anything that has fins and scales, and lives in the water, whether in sea or river, you may eat.9 These are the things that breed in the waters, and which it is lawful to eat. All that hath fins, and scales, as well in the sea, as in the rivers, and the pools, you shall eat.
But anything in sea or river that does not have fins and scales, of al the smal water-creatures and althe living things found there, you wil regard as detestable.10 But whatsoever hath not fins and scales, of those things that move and live in the waters, shall be an abomination to you,
You wil regard them as detestable; you must not eat their meat and you wil regard their carcases asdetestable.11 And detestable : their flesh you shall not eat, and their carcasses you shall avoid.
Anything that lives in water, but not having fins and scales, you wil regard as detestable.12 All that have not fins and scales, in the waters, shall be unclean.
"Of the birds these are the ones that you wil regard as detestable; they may not be eaten, they aredetestable for eating: "The tawny vulture, the griffon, the osprey,13 Of birds these are they which you must not eat, and which are to be avoided by you: The eagle, and the griffon, and the osprey,
the kite, the various kinds of buzzard,14 And the kite, and the vulture, according to their kind,
all kinds of raven,15 And all that is of the raven kind, according to their likeness.
the ostrich, the screech owl, the seagul , the various kinds of hawk,16 The ostrich, and the owl, and the larus, and the hawk according to its kind.
horned owl, night owl, cormorant, barn owl,17 The screech owl, and the cormorant, and the ibis,
ibis, pelican, white vulture,18 And the swan, and the bittern, and the porphyrion,
stork, the various kinds of heron, the hoopoe and the bat.19 The heron, and the charadrion according to its kind, the houp also, and the bat.
"Al winged insects moving on four feet you wil regard as detestable for eating.20 Of things that fly, whatsoever goeth upon four feet, shall be abominable to you.
Of al these winged insects you may eat only the fol owing: those with the sort of legs above their feetwhich enable them to leap over the ground.21 But whatsoever walketh upon four feet, but hath the legs behind longer, wherewith it hoppeth upon the earth,
These are the ones you may eat: the various kinds of migratory locust, the various kinds of solhamlocust, hargol locust and hagab locust.22 That you shall eat, as the bruchus in its kind, the attacus, and ophiomachus, and the locust, every one according to their kind.
But al other winged insects on four feet you wil regard as detestable for eating.23 But of dying things whatsoever hath four feet only, shall be an abomination to you:
"By the fol owing you wil be made unclean. Anyone who touches the carcase of one wil be uncleanuntil evening.24 And whosoever shall touch the carcasses of them, shall be defiled, and shall be unclean until the evening:
Anyone who picks up their carcases must wash his clothing and wil be unclean until evening.25 And if it be necessary that he carry any of these things when they are dead, he shall wash his clothes, and shall be unclean until the sun set.
Animals that have hoofs, but not cloven, and that are not ruminant, you wil regard as unclean;anyone who touches them will be unclean.26 Every beast that hath a hoof, but divideth it not, nor cheweth the cud, shall be unclean: and he that toucheth it, shall be defiled.
Those four-footed animals which walk on the flat of their paws you wil regard as unclean; anyonewho touches their carcases wil be unclean until evening,27 That which walketh upon hands of all animals which go on all four, shall be unclean: he that shall touch their carcasses shall be defiled until evening.
and anyone who picks up their carcases must wash his clothing and wil be unclean until evening. You will regard them as unclean.28 And he that shall carry such carcasses, shall wash his clothes, and shall be unclean until evening: because all these things are unclean to you.
"Of the smal creatures which crawl along the ground, these are the ones which you wil regard asunclean: the mole, the rat, the various kinds of lizard:29 These also shall be reckoned among unclean things, of all that move upon the earth, the weasel, and the mouse, and the crocodile, every one according to their kind:
gecko, koah, letaah, chameleon and tinshamet.30 The shrew, and the chameleon, and the stello, and the lizard, and the mole:
"Of al the smal creatures, these are the animals which you must regard as disgusting. Anyone whotouches them when they are dead will be unclean until evening.31 All these are unclean. He that toucheth their carcasses shall be unclean until the evening.
"Any object on which one of these creatures fal s when it is dead becomes unclean: wooden utensil, clothing, skin, sacking, any utensil whatever. It must be immersed in water and wil remain unclean until evening:then it wil be clean.32 And upon what thing soever any of their carcasses shall fall, it shall be defiled, whether it be a vessel of wood, or a garment, or skins or haircloths; or any thing in which work is done, they shall be dipped in water, and shall be unclean until the evening, and so afterwards shall be clean.
If the creature fal s into an earthenware vessel, the vessel must be broken; whatever the vesselcontains is unclean.33 But an earthen vessel, into which any of these shall fall, shall be defiled, and therefore is to be broken.
Any edible food wil be unclean if the water touches it; any drinkable liquid will be unclean, no matterwhat its container.34 Any meat which you eat, if water from such a vessel be poured upon it, shall be unclean; and every liquor that is drunk out of any such vessel, shall be unclean.
Anything on which the carcase of such a creature may fal wil be unclean: be it oven or stove, it mustbe destroyed; for they are unclean and you wil regard them as unclean35 And upon whatsoever thing any of these dead beasts shall fall, it shall be unclean: whether it be oven, or pots with feet, they shall be destroyed, and shall be unclean.
(although springs, wel s and stretches of water wil remain clean); anyone who touches one of theircarcases wil be unclean.36 But fountains and cisterns, and all gatherings together of waters shall be clean. He that toucheth their carcasses shall be defiled.
If one of their carcases fal s on any kind of seed, the seed will remain clean;37 If it fall upon seed corn, it shall not defile it.
but if the seed has been moistened and one of their carcases fal s on it, you wil regard it as unclean.38 But if any man pour water upon the seed, and afterwards it be touched by the carcasses, it shall be forthwith defiled.
"If one of the animals that you use as food dies, anyone who touches the carcase wil be unclean untilevening;39 If any beast die, of which it is lawful for you to eat, he that toucheth the carcass thereof, shall be unclean until the evening:
anyone who eats any of the carcase must wash his clothing and will remain unclean until evening;anyone who picks up the carcase must wash his clothing and wil remain unclean until evening.40 And he that eateth or carrieth any thing thereof, shall wash his clothes, and shall be unclean until the evening.
"Any creature that swarms on the ground is detestable for eating; it must not be eaten.41 All that creepeth upon the earth shall be abominable, neither shall it be taken for meat.
Anything that moves on its bel y, anything that moves on four legs or more -- in short all the creaturesthat swarm on the ground -- you will not eat, since they are detestable.42 Whatsoever goeth upon the breast on four feet, or hath many feet, or traileth on the earth, you shall not eat, because it is abominable.
Do not make yourselves detestable with al these swarming creatures; do not defile yourselves withthem, do not be defiled by them.43 Do not defile your souls, nor touch aught thereof, lest you be unclean,
For it is I, Yahweh, who am your God. You have been sanctified and have become holy because I amholy: do not defile yourselves with all these creatures that swarm on the ground.44 For I am the Lord your God: be holy because I am holy. Defile not your souls by any creeping thing, that moveth upon the earth.
Yes, it is I, Yahweh, who brought you out of Egypt to be your God: you must therefore be holybecause I am holy." '45 For I am the Lord, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that I might be your God.
Such is the law concerning animals, birds, al living creatures that move in water and al creaturesthat swarm on the ground.46 You shall be holy, because I am holy. This is the law of beasts and fowls, and of every living creature that moveth in the waters, and creepeth on the earth:
Its purpose is to distinguish the clean from the unclean, the creatures that may be eaten from thosethat may not be eaten.47 That you may know the differences of the clean, and unclean, and know what you ought to eat, and what to refuse.
