NEW JERUSALEMDOUAI-RHEIMS
Blessed is anyone who has not sinned in speech and who needs feel no remorse for sins.1 Blessed is the man that hath not slipped by a word out of his mouth, and is not pricked with the remorse of sin.
Blessed is anyone whose conscience brings no reproach and who has never given up hope.2 Happy is he that hath had no sadness of his mind, and who is not fallen from his hope.
Wealth is not the right thing for the niggardly, and what use are possessions to the covetous?3 Riches are not comely for a covetous man and a niggard, and what should an envious man do with gold?
Whoever hoards by stinting himself is hoarding for others, and others wil live sumptuously on hisriches.4 He that gathereth together by wronging his own soul, gathereth for others, and another will squander away his goods in rioting.
If someone is mean to himself, whom does he benefit? he does not even enjoy what is his own.5 He that is evil to himself, to whom will he be good? and he shall not take pleasure in his goods.
No one is meaner than the person who is mean to himself, this is how his wickedness repays him.6 There is none worse than he that envieth himself, and this is the reward of his wickedness:
If he does any good, he does it unintentional y, and in the end he himself reveals his wickedness.7 And if he do good, he doth it ignorantly, and unwillingly: and at the last he discovereth his wickedness.
Wicked the person who has an envious eye, averting his face, and careless of others' lives.8 The eye of the envious is wicked: and he turneth away his face, and despiseth his own soul.
The eye of the grasping is not content with what he has, greed shrivels up the soul.9 The eye of the covetous man is insatiable in his portion of iniquity: he will not be satisfied till he consume his own soul, drying it up.
The miser is grudging of bread, there is famine at his table.10 An evil eye is towards evil things: and he shall not have his fill of bread, but shall be needy and pensive at his own table.
My child, treat yourself as wel as you can afford, and bring worthy offerings to the Lord.11 My son, if thou have any thing, do good to thyself, and offer to God worthy offerings.
Remember that death wil not delay, and that you have never seen Sheol's contract.12 Remember that death is not slow, and that the covenant of hell hath been shewn to thee: for the covenant of this world shall surely die.
Be kind to your friend before you die, treat him as generously as you can afford.13 Do good to thy friend before thou die, and according to thy ability, stretching out thy hand give to the poor.
Do not refuse yourself the good things of today, do not let your share of what is lawfully desired passyou by.14 Defraud not thyself of the good day, and let not the part of a good gift overpass thee.
Wil you not have to leave your fortune to another, and the fruit of your labour to be divided by lot?15 Shalt thou not leave to others to divide by lot thy sorrows and labours?
Give and receive, enjoy yourself -- there are no pleasures to be found in Sheol.16 Give and take, and justify thy soul.
Like clothes, every body wil wear out, the age -- old law is, 'Everyone must die.'17 Before thy death work justice: for in hell there is no finding food.
Like foliage growing on a bushy tree, some leaves fal ing, others growing, so are the generations offlesh and blood: one dies, another is born.18 All flesh shall fade as grass, and as the leaf that springeth out on a green tree.
Every achievement rots away and perishes, and with it goes its author.19 Some grow, and some fall off: so is the generation of flesh and blood, one cometh to an end, and another is born.
Blessed is anyone who meditates on wisdom, and reasons with intelligence,20 Every work that is corruptible shall fail in the end: and the worker thereof shall go with it.
who studies her ways in his heart, and ponders her secrets.21 And every excellent work shall be justified: and the worker thereof shall be honoured therein.
He pursues her like a hunter, and lies in wait by her path;22 Blessed is the man that shall continue in wisdom, and that shall meditate in his justice, and in his mind shall think of the all seeing eye of God.
he peeps in at her windows, and listens at her doors;23 He that considereth her ways in his heart, and hath understanding in her secrets, who goeth after her as one that traceth, and stayeth in her ways:
he lodges close to her house, and fixes his peg in her wal s;24 He who looketh in at her windows, and hearkeneth at her door:
he pitches his tent at her side, and lodges in an excel ent lodging;25 He that lodgeth near her house, and fastening a pin in her walls shall set up his tent nigh unto her, where good things shall rest in his lodging for ever.
he sets his children in her shade, and camps beneath her branches;26 He shall set his children under her shelter, and shall lodge under her branches:
he is sheltered by her from the heat, and in her glory he makes his home.27 He shall be protected under her covering from the heat, and shall rest in her glory.
