Proverbs 18

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA TINTORI
1 Whoever lives alone fol ows private whims, and is angered by advice of any kind.	1 Colui che vuol ritirarsi dall'amico cerca pretesti; ma sarà esecrabile in ogni tempo.
2 A fool takes no pleasure in understanding but only in airing an opinion.	2 Lo stolto non accoglie le parole della prudenza, se tu non parli secondo quello che egli ha nel cuore.
3 When wickedness comes, indignity comes too, and, with contempt, dishonour.	3 L'empio, giunto nel profondo dei peccati, disprezza, ma lo inseguono le ignominie e l'obbrobrio.
4 Deep waters, such are human words: a gushing stream, the utterance of wisdom.	4 Le parole che vengon dalla bocca del saggio sono acqua profonda; è un torrente che inonda la fontana della sapienza.
5 It is not good to show partiality for the wicked and so to deprive the upright when giving judgement.	5 Non sta bene aver riguardi alla persona dell'empio per sviare dalla verità nel giudizio.
6 The lips of a fool go to the law-courts with a mouth that pleads for a beating.	6 Le labbra dello stolto s'impaccian nelle risse, e la sua bocca provoca litigi.
7 The mouth of the fool works its owner's ruin, the lips of a fool are a snare for their owner's life.	7 La bocca dello stolto lo demolisce, e le sue labbra son la sua rovina.
8 The words of a slanderer are tasty morsels that go right down into the bel y.	8 Le parole della lingua doppia sembrar semplici, ma penetran nell'intimo delle viscere. Il timore abbatte il pigro, gli uomini effeminati patiranno la fame.
9 Whoever is idle at work is blood-brother to the destroyer.	9 Chi è molle e infingardo nel suo lavoro è fratello di chi dissipa quanto ha fatto.
10 The name of Yahweh is a strong tower; the upright runs to it and is secure.	10 Il nome del Signore è torre fortissima, a lei ricorre il giusto, e sarà in luogo sicuro.
11 The wealth of the rich forms a stronghold, a high wal , as the rich supposes.	11 I beni del ricco sono la sua città forte, son come valida muraglia intorno a lui.
12 The human heart is haughty until destruction comes, before there can be glory there must be humility.	12 Prima della rovina il cuore dell'uomo s'esalta, e prima d'essere esaltato è umiliato.
13 To retort without first listening is both foolish and embarrassing.	13 Chi risponde prima d'avere ascoltato si mostra stolto e degno di confusione.
14 Sickness the human spirit can endure, but when the spirit is broken, who can bear this?	14 Lo spirito dell'uomo lo sostiene nella sua debolezza, ma lo spirito facile all'ira chi potrà sostenerlo?
15 The heart of the intel igent acquires learning, the ears of the wise search for knowledge.	15 Il cuore prudente acquisterà la scienza, e l'orecchio dei saggi cerca la dottrina.
16 A present will open al doors and win access to the great.	16 Il regalo che fa un uomo gli apre la strada, gli fa largo dinanzi ai principi.
17 The first to plead is adjudged to be upright, until the next comes and cross-examines him.	17 Il giusto è il primo ad accusar se stesso; vien poi il suo amico e l'esamina.
18 The lot puts an end to disputes and decides between men of power.	18 La sorte finisce le contese, e decide anche tra i grandi.
19 A brother offended is worse than a fortified city, and quarrels are like the locks of a keep.	19 Il fratello aiutato dal fratello è come città forte, e i giudizi sono come le sbarre delle porte della città.
20 From the fruit of the mouth is a stomach fil ed, it is the yield of the lips that gives contentment.	20 Col frutto della sua bocca l'uomo empirà il suo ventre, e i proventi dei suoi labbri lo sazieranno.
21 Death and life are in the gift of the tongue, those who indulge it must eat the fruit it yields.	21 Morte e vita sono in potere della lingua, chi ne terrà conto ne mangerà i frutti.
22 He who finds a wife finds happiness, receiving a mark of favour from Yahweh.	22 Chi ha trovato una buona moglie ha trovato una fortuna, e riceverà consolazione dal Signore. Chi ripudia una buona moglie caccia il bene, chi poi tiene un'adultera è stolto ed empio.
23 The language of the poor is entreaty, the answer of the rich harshness.	23 Il povero parla supplicando, e il ricco risponde con durezza.
24 There are friends who point the way to ruin, others are closer than a brother.	24 L'uomo amabile e socievole sarà più amico d'un fratello.
