Proverbs 18

1 Whoever lives alone fol ows private whims, and is angered by advice of any kind.	1 Chi si tiene appartato cerca il suo piacere e con ogni stratagemma attacca brighe.
2 A fool takes no pleasure in understanding but only in airing an opinion.	2 Lo stolto non ama la prudenza, ma vuole solo far mostra dei suoi sentimenti.
3 When wickedness comes, indignity comes too, and, with contempt, dishonour.	3 Con la malvagità viene il disprezzo, con il disonore anche l’ignominia.
4 Deep waters, such are human words: a gushing stream, the utterance of wisdom.	4 Le parole della bocca dell’uomo sono acqua profonda, la fonte della sapienza è un torrente che straripa.
5 It is not good to show partiality for the wicked and so to deprive the upright when giving judgement.	5 Non è bene usare riguardi al malvagio per far torto al giusto in un giudizio.
6 The lips of a fool go to the law-courts with a mouth that pleads for a beating.	6 Le labbra dello stolto suscitano liti e la sua bocca gli provoca percosse.
7 The mouth of the fool works its owner's ruin, the lips of a fool are a snare for their owner's life.	7 La bocca dello stolto è la sua rovina e le sue labbra sono una trappola per la sua vita.
8 The words of a slanderer are tasty morsels that go right down into the bel y.	8 Le parole del calunniatore sono come ghiotti bocconi che scendono fin nel più intimo.
9 Whoever is idle at work is blood-brother to the destroyer.	9 Chi è già indolente nel suo lavoro è fratello del dissipatore.
10 The name of Yahweh is a strong tower; the upright runs to it and is secure.	10 Torre fortificata è il nome del Signore: il giusto vi si rifugia ed è al sicuro.
11 The wealth of the rich forms a stronghold, a high wal , as the rich supposes.	11 I beni del ricco sono la sua roccaforte, sono come un’alta muraglia nella sua immaginazione.
12 The human heart is haughty until destruction comes, before there can be glory there must be humility.	12 Prima della caduta il cuore dell’uomo si esalta, prima della gloria c’è l’umiltà.
13 To retort without first listening is both foolish and embarrassing.	13 Chi risponde prima di avere ascoltato, mostra stoltezza e ne avrà vergogna.
14 Sickness the human spirit can endure, but when the spirit is broken, who can bear this?	14 Lo spirito dell’uomo lo sostiene nella malattia, ma uno spirito depresso chi lo solleverà?
15 The heart of the intel igent acquires learning, the ears of the wise search for knowledge.	15 Il cuore intelligente acquista la scienza, l’orecchio dei saggi ricerca il sapere.
16 A present will open al doors and win access to the great.	16 Il dono che l’uomo fa gli spiana la via e lo introduce alla presenza dei grandi.
17 The first to plead is adjudged to be upright, until the next comes and cross-examines him.	17 Il primo a parlare in una lite sembra aver ragione, ma viene il suo avversario e lo confuta.
18 The lot puts an end to disputes and decides between men of power.	18 La sorte fa cessare le contese e decide fra i potenti.
19 A brother offended is worse than a fortified city, and quarrels are like the locks of a keep.	19 Un fratello offeso è più inespugnabile d’una roccaforte, le liti sono come le sbarre di un castello.
20 From the fruit of the mouth is a stomach fil ed, it is the yield of the lips that gives contentment.	20 Con il frutto della bocca ci si sazia il ventre, ognuno si sazia con il prodotto delle sue labbra.
21 Death and life are in the gift of the tongue, those who indulge it must eat the fruit it yields.	21 Morte e vita sono in potere della lingua e chi ne fa buon uso ne mangerà i frutti.
22 He who finds a wife finds happiness, receiving a mark of favour from Yahweh.	22 Chi trova una moglie trova una fortuna e ottiene il favore del Signore.
23 The language of the poor is entreaty, the answer of the rich harshness.	23 Il povero parla con suppliche, il ricco risponde con durezza.
24 There are friends who point the way to ruin, others are closer than a brother.	24 Ci sono compagni che si rovinano a vicenda, ma anche amici più affezionati di un fratello.
