Proverbs 18

1 Whoever lives alone fol ows private whims, and is angered by advice of any kind.	1 Alkalmat keres, aki szakítani akar barátjával, az ilyen pedig gyalázatos lesz mindenkor.
2 A fool takes no pleasure in understanding but only in airing an opinion.	2 A balga nem fogadja be az okosság igéit, ha nem azt mondod, amit elméjében forgat.
3 When wickedness comes, indignity comes too, and, with contempt, dishonour.	3 Ha az istentelen elér a gonoszság fenekéig, fitymál, de nyomában van a szégyen és a gyalázat!
4 Deep waters, such are human words: a gushing stream, the utterance of wisdom.	4 A bölcs férfi szájában a szavak olyanok, mint a mély víz, mint a kiáradó patak, és mint a bölcsesség forrása.
5 It is not good to show partiality for the wicked and so to deprive the upright when giving judgement.	5 Nem helyes kedvezni a gonosz személyének, mert eltérsz az igaz ítélettől.
6 The lips of a fool go to the law-courts with a mouth that pleads for a beating.	6 A balga ajka viszályba keveredik, szája pedig perlekedést szít.
7 The mouth of the fool works its owner's ruin, the lips of a fool are a snare for their owner's life.	7 Romlást hoz a balgára a szája, és ajka kelepce a lelkének.
8 The words of a slanderer are tasty morsels that go right down into the bel y.	8 A besúgó beszéde olyan, mint az ínyencség, s a gyomor belsejébe hatol. A lustát leveri a félelem, s a puhányok lelke éhezik.
9 Whoever is idle at work is blood-brother to the destroyer.	9 Aki lágy és tunya a dolga végzésében, édes testvére a tékozlónak.
10 The name of Yahweh is a strong tower; the upright runs to it and is secure.	10 Az Úr neve erős torony, hozzá menekül az igaz, és biztonságban van.
11 The wealth of the rich forms a stronghold, a high wal , as the rich supposes.	11 A gazdag vagyona erős város számára, úgy veszi őt körül, mint az erős fal.
12 The human heart is haughty until destruction comes, before there can be glory there must be humility.	12 Mielőtt összetörne, felfuvalkodik az ember szíve, a dicsőség előtt pedig alázatosság jár.
13 To retort without first listening is both foolish and embarrassing.	13 Aki felel, mielőtt valamit meghallgatna, balgának és szégyenteljesnek mutatkozik.
14 Sickness the human spirit can endure, but when the spirit is broken, who can bear this?	14 A férfilélek eltűri a betegséget, de ki tudja elviselni a haragra hajlamos lelket?
15 The heart of the intel igent acquires learning, the ears of the wise search for knowledge.	15 Az értelmes szív megszerzi a tudást, s a bölcsek füle keresi a tudományt.
16 A present will open al doors and win access to the great.	16 Az ajándék tágassá teszi az utat az ember számára, s a nagyok színe elé juttatja.
17 The first to plead is adjudged to be upright, until the next comes and cross-examines him.	17 Igazat adnak annak, aki a pörben elsőnek jut szóhoz, azután eljön az ellenfele és kivallatja.
18 The lot puts an end to disputes and decides between men of power.	18 A sorshúzás viszályokat szüntet, és igazságot tesz a hatalmasok között.
19 A brother offended is worse than a fortified city, and quarrels are like the locks of a keep.	19 Erős város a testvér, akit testvére megsegít. A törvénylátás a városkapu retesze.
20 From the fruit of the mouth is a stomach fil ed, it is the yield of the lips that gives contentment.	20 Mindenkinek a szája gyümölcsével telik meg a gyomra, s attól lakik jól, ami ajkán terem.
21 Death and life are in the gift of the tongue, those who indulge it must eat the fruit it yields.	21 A nyelv által jöhet halál is, élet is, ki mit szeret, annak gyümölcsét élvezi.
22 He who finds a wife finds happiness, receiving a mark of favour from Yahweh.	22 Aki jó feleséget talál, szerencsét talál, s az Úrtól jótéteményben részesül, aki jó feleséget űz el, elűzi magától a szerencsét, de aki a házasságtörőt megtartja, balga az és istentelen.
23 The language of the poor is entreaty, the answer of the rich harshness.	23 A szegény esdekelve beszél, a gazdag pedig keményen válaszol.
24 There are friends who point the way to ruin, others are closer than a brother.	24 Van barát, aki kellemes a társalgásban, és van olyan, aki szeret, és testvérnél is ragaszkodóbb.
