Proverbs 18

NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 Whoever lives alone fol ows private whims, and is angered by advice of any kind.	1 Segue il suo piacere colui che si separa; dell'altrui parere egli si beffa.
2 A fool takes no pleasure in understanding but only in airing an opinion.	2 Lo stolto non ama aver la scienza, ma far mostra di avere intelligenza.
3 When wickedness comes, indignity comes too, and, with contempt, dishonour.	3 Quando viene l'empietà viene anche il disprezzo e con la turpitudine l'obbrobrio.
4 Deep waters, such are human words: a gushing stream, the utterance of wisdom.	4 Acque profonde son le parole che pronuncia l'uomo, torrente straripante è la fonte di saggezza.
5 It is not good to show partiality for the wicked and so to deprive the upright when giving judgement.	5 Favorire l'empio non è bene, per ostacolare il giusto nel giudizio.
6 The lips of a fool go to the law-courts with a mouth that pleads for a beating.	6 Le labbra dello stolto portano alla lite e la sua bocca gli procura i colpi.
7 The mouth of the fool works its owner's ruin, the lips of a fool are a snare for their owner's life.	7 La bocca dello stolto è la sua rovina, le sue labbra sono un laccio alla sua vita.
8 The words of a slanderer are tasty morsels that go right down into the bel y.	8 Le parole del denigratore sono come bocconi deliziosi, che scendono fino al fondo delle viscere.
9 Whoever is idle at work is blood-brother to the destroyer.	9 Chi si mostra negligente nel lavoro, costui è fratello di chi lo vuol distruggere.
10 The name of Yahweh is a strong tower; the upright runs to it and is secure.	10 Una fortezza è il nome del Signore; a lui ricorre il giusto ed è al sicuro.
11 The wealth of the rich forms a stronghold, a high wal , as the rich supposes.	11 La fortuna del ricco è la sua fortezza; un alto muro nella sua opinione.
12 The human heart is haughty until destruction comes, before there can be glory there must be humility.	12 Prima della sua rovina s'innalza il cuor dell'uomo, prima della gloria c'è l'umiliazione.
13 To retort without first listening is both foolish and embarrassing.	13 Chi risponde prima di ascoltare è stoltezza per lui e confusione.
14 Sickness the human spirit can endure, but when the spirit is broken, who can bear this?	14 Lo spirito dell'uomo sostiene la sua fragilità; lo spirito abbattuto chi lo rialzerà?
15 The heart of the intel igent acquires learning, the ears of the wise search for knowledge.	15 Un cuore intelligente acquista conoscenza e l'orecchio dei saggi cerca la scienza.
16 A present will open al doors and win access to the great.	16 Il dono dell'uomo tutto gli spalanca e alla presenza dei grandi lo conduce.
17 The first to plead is adjudged to be upright, until the next comes and cross-examines him.	17 Si dà ragione al primo in una lite, ma viene il suo avversario e lo contesta.
18 The lot puts an end to disputes and decides between men of power.	18 La sorte mette fine alle contese e tra i potenti dà una decisione.
19 A brother offended is worse than a fortified city, and quarrels are like the locks of a keep.	19 Un fratello aiutato da un fratello è come una fortezza; gli amici come il catenaccio di un castello.
20 From the fruit of the mouth is a stomach fil ed, it is the yield of the lips that gives contentment.	20 Col lavoro della bocca si sazia lo stomaco dell'uomo; col frutto delle sue labbra si soddisfa.
21 Death and life are in the gift of the tongue, those who indulge it must eat the fruit it yields.	21 Morte e vita sono in potere della lingua; chi ne sa fare uso ne assaggerà il frutto.
22 He who finds a wife finds happiness, receiving a mark of favour from Yahweh.	22 Chi ha trovato una sposa ha trovato un tesoro; ha ottenuto una grazia dal Signore.
23 The language of the poor is entreaty, the answer of the rich harshness.	23 Il povero parla supplicando, il ricco invece risponde con durezza.
24 There are friends who point the way to ruin, others are closer than a brother.	24 Ci sono amici che mandano in rovina ma c'è l'amico più caro di un fratello.
