1 Whoever lives alone fol ows private whims, and is angered by advice of any kind.	1 L’égoïste suit son bon plaisir; il se hérisse contre tout conseil.
2 A fool takes no pleasure in understanding but only in airing an opinion.	2 Le sot ne veut pas réfléchir, mais étaler ses opinions.
3 When wickedness comes, indignity comes too, and, with contempt, dishonour.	3 La méchanceté attire le mépris, une conduite honteuse attire les reproches.
4 Deep waters, such are human words: a gushing stream, the utterance of wisdom.	4 La parole humaine est une eau profonde, une fontaine jaillissante, une source de vie.
5 It is not good to show partiality for the wicked and so to deprive the upright when giving judgement.	5 Il n’est pas bien de céder au méchant, et de condamner celui qui est dans son droit.
6 The lips of a fool go to the law-courts with a mouth that pleads for a beating.	6 Les réflexions du sot attirent la dispute; quand il parle, il appelle la bagarre.
7 The mouth of the fool works its owner's ruin, the lips of a fool are a snare for their owner's life.	7 Le sot parle et se fait tort à lui-même: il se prépare un piège.
8 The words of a slanderer are tasty morsels that go right down into the bel y.	8 Les paroles du médisant sont comme des friandises; elles glissent doucement jusqu’au fond des entrailles.
9 Whoever is idle at work is blood-brother to the destroyer.	9 Celui qui se relâche dans son travail est frère de celui qui démolit.
10 The name of Yahweh is a strong tower; the upright runs to it and is secure.	10 Le nom de Yahvé est une forteresse; le juste y accourt et s’y trouve en sécurité.
11 The wealth of the rich forms a stronghold, a high wal , as the rich supposes.	11 La fortune du riche, voilà sa ville forte; elle lui semble un rempart imprenable.
12 The human heart is haughty until destruction comes, before there can be glory there must be humility.	12 L’arrogance de l’homme a précédé sa ruine; l’humilité a précédé la gloire.
13 To retort without first listening is both foolish and embarrassing.	13 Qui répond avant d’avoir écouté passe pour stupide et se couvre de ridicule.
14 Sickness the human spirit can endure, but when the spirit is broken, who can bear this?	14 L’esprit de l’homme est ce qui le maintient dans sa maladie; mais comment relever l’esprit abattu?
15 The heart of the intel igent acquires learning, the ears of the wise search for knowledge.	15 Un esprit ouvert acquiert des connaissances; l’oreille du sage est à la recherche du savoir.
16 A present will open al doors and win access to the great.	16 Un cadeau vous ouvre les portes; c’est la façon de s’introduire auprès des grands.
17 The first to plead is adjudged to be upright, until the next comes and cross-examines him.	17 Dans une dispute, le premier a raison; mais l’autre se présente, et tout est à revoir.
18 The lot puts an end to disputes and decides between men of power.	18 Le tirage à pile ou face pourrait résoudre bien des querelles, et même trancher entre des puissants.
19 A brother offended is worse than a fortified city, and quarrels are like the locks of a keep.	19 Un frère aidé par son frère est comme une forteresse, et des amis, comme les verrous d’une tour.
20 From the fruit of the mouth is a stomach fil ed, it is the yield of the lips that gives contentment.	20 Tout ce que tu as dit, tu t’en rempliras l’estomac; tu mangeras jusqu’à plus faim ce qui est tombé de tes lèvres.
21 Death and life are in the gift of the tongue, those who indulge it must eat the fruit it yields.	21 La langue a pouvoir sur la mort et sur la vie; selon l’usage qu’on en fait, on en goûtera les fruits.
22 He who finds a wife finds happiness, receiving a mark of favour from Yahweh.	22 Qui a trouvé une épouse a trouvé le bonheur; c’est Yahvé qui lui en fait la grâce.
23 The language of the poor is entreaty, the answer of the rich harshness.	23 Le mendiant parle en suppliant, mais le riche lui répond avec dureté.
24 There are friends who point the way to ruin, others are closer than a brother.	24 Il y a des amis qui conduisent au malheur, mais tel autre est plus attaché qu’un frère.
