God of vengeance, Yahweh, God of vengeance, shine forth! | 1 LORD, avenging God, avenging God, shine forth! |
Arise, judge of the world, give back the proud what they deserve! | 2 Rise up, judge of the earth; give the proud what they deserve. |
How long are the wicked, Yahweh, how long are the wicked to triumph? | 3 How long, LORD, shall the wicked, how long shall the wicked glory? |
They bluster and boast, they flaunt themselves, all the evil-doers. | 4 How long will they mouth haughty speeches, go on boasting, all these evildoers? |
They crush your people, Yahweh, they oppress your heritage, | 5 They crush your people, LORD, torment your very own. |
they murder the widow and the stranger, bring the orphan to a violent death. | 6 They kill the widow and alien; the fatherless they murder. |
They say, 'Yahweh is not looking, the God of Jacob is taking no notice.' | 7 They say, "The LORD does not see; the God of Jacob takes no notice." |
Take notice yourselves, you coarsest of people! Fools, when wil you learn some sense? | 8 Understand, you stupid people! You fools, when will you be wise? |
Shal he who implanted the ear not hear, he who fashioned the eye not see? | 9 Does the one who shaped the ear not hear? The one who formed the eye not see? |
Shal he who instructs nations not punish? Yahweh, the teacher of al people, | 10 Does the one who guides nations not rebuke? The one who teaches humans not have knowledge? |
knows human plans and how insipid they are. | 11 The LORD does know human plans; they are only puffs of air. |
How blessed are those you instruct, Yahweh, whom you teach by means of your law, | 12 Happy those whom you guide, LORD, whom you teach by your instruction. |
to give them respite in evil times, til a pit is dug for the wicked. | 13 You give them rest from evil days, while a pit is being dug for the wicked. |
Yahweh will not abandon his people, he wil not desert his heritage; | 14 You, LORD, will not forsake your people, nor abandon your very own. |
for judgement will again become saving justice, and in its wake al upright hearts will fol ow. | 15 Judgment shall again be just, and all the upright of heart will follow it. |
Who rises up on my side against the wicked? Who stands firm on my side against al evil-doers? | 16 Who will rise up for me against the wicked? Who will stand up for me against evildoers? |
If Yahweh did not come to my help, I should soon find myself dwel ing in the silence. | 17 If the LORD were not my help, I would long have been silent in the grave. |
I need only say, 'I am slipping,' for your faithful love, Yahweh, to support me; | 18 When I say, "My foot is slipping," your love, LORD, holds me up. |
however great the anxiety of my heart, your consolations soothe me. | 19 When cares increase within me, your comfort gives me joy. |
Are you partner to a destructive court, that gives disorder the status of law? | 20 Can unjust judges be your allies, those who create burdens in the name of law, |
They make an attack on the life of the upright, and condemn innocent blood. | 21 Those who conspire against the just and condemn the innocent to death? |
No! Yahweh is a stronghold to me, my God is my rock of refuge. | 22 No, the LORD is my secure height, my God, the rock where I find refuge, |
He turns back their guilt on themselves, annihilates them for their wickedness, he annihilates them,Yahweh our God. | 23 Who will turn back their evil upon them and destroy them for their wickedness. Surely the LORD our God will destroy them! |
