[For the choirmaster Tune: 'Lilies . . .' Of the sons of Korah Poem Love song] My heart is stirred by anoble theme, I address my poem to the king, my tongue the pen of an expert scribe.1 Unto the end, for them that shall be changed, for the sons of Core, for understanding. A canticle for the Beloved.
Of al men you are the most handsome, gracefulness is a dew upon your lips, for God has blessed youfor ever.2 My heart hath uttered a good word I speak my works to the king; My tongue is the pen of a scrivener that writeth swiftly.
Warrior, strap your sword at your side, in your majesty and splendour advance,3 Thou art beautiful above the sons of men: grace is poured abroad in thy lips; therefore hath God blessed thee for ever
ride on in the cause of truth, gentleness and uprightness. Stretch the bowstring tight, lending terror toyour right hand.4 Gird thy sword upon thy thigh, O thou most mighty.
Your arrows are sharp, nations lie at your mercy, the king's enemies lose heart.5 With thy comeliness and thy beauty set out, proceed prosperously, and reign. Because of truth and meekness and justice: and thy right hand shall conduct thee wonderfully.
Your throne is from God, for ever and ever, the sceptre of your kingship a sceptre of justice,6 Thy arrows are sharp: under thee shall people fall, into the hearts of the king's enemies.
you love uprightness and detest evil. This is why God, your God, has anointed you with oil ofgladness, as none of your rivals,7 Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: the sceptre of thy kingdom is a sceptre of uprightness.
your robes al myrrh and aloes. From palaces of ivory, harps bring you joy,8 Thou hast loved justice, and hated iniquity: therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.
in your retinue are daughters of kings, the consort at your right hand in gold of Ophir.9 Myrrh and stacte and cassia perfume thy garments, from the ivory houses: out of which
Listen, my daughter, attend to my words and hear; forget your own nation and your ancestral home,10 the daughters of kings have delighted thee in thy glory. The queen stood on thy right hand, in gilded clothing; surrounded with variety.
then the king will fal in love with your beauty; he is your lord, bow down before him.11 Hearken, O daughter, and see, and incline thy ear: and forget thy people and thy father's house.
The daughter of Tyre wil court your favour with gifts, and the richest of peoples12 And the king shall greatly desire thy beauty; for he is the Lord thy God, and him they shall adore.
with jewels set in gold. Clothed13 And the daughters of Tyre with gifts, yea, all the rich among the people, shall entreat thy countenance.
in brocade, the king's daughter is led within to the king with the maidens of her retinue; hercompanions are brought to her,14 All the glory of the king's daughter is within in golden borders,
they enter the king's palace with joy and rejoicing.15 clothed round about with varieties. After her shall virgins be brought to the king: her neighbours shall be brought to thee.
Instead of your ancestors you will have sons; you wil make them rulers over the whole world.16 They shall be brought with gladness and rejoicing: they shall be brought into the temple of the king.
I wil make your name endure from generation to generation, so nations will sing your praise for everand ever.17 Instead of thy fathers, sons are born to thee: thou shalt make them princes over all the earth.
They shall remember thy name throughout all generations. Therefore shall people praise thee for ever; yea, for ever and ever.
