NEW JERUSALEM	SAGRADA BIBLIA
1 Job spoke next. He said:	1 Jó tomou a palavra nestes termos:
2 If only my misery could be weighed, and al my il s be put together on the scales!	2 Ah! se pudessem pesar minha aflição, e pôr na balança com ela meu infortúnio!
3 But they outweigh the sands of the seas: what wonder then if my words are wild?	3 esta aqui apareceria mais pesada do que a areia dos mares: eis por que minhas palavras são desvairadas.
4 The arrows of Shaddai stick fast in me, my spirit absorbs their poison, God's terrors stand paradedagainst me.	4 As setas do Todo-poderoso estão cravadas em mim, e meu espírito bebe o veneno delas; os terrores de Deus me assediam
5 Does a wild donkey bray when it has grass, or an ox low when its fodder is within reach?	5 Porventura orneja o asno montês, quando tem erva? Muge o touro junto de sua forragem?
6 Is not food insipid, eaten without salt, is there any taste in egg-white?	6 Come-se uma coisa insípida sem sal? Pode alguém saborear aquilo que não tem gosto algum?
7 But the very things my appetite revolts at are now my diet in sickness.	7 Minha alma recusa-se a tocar nisso, meu coração está desgostoso.
8 Will no one hear my prayer, will not God himself grant my hope?	8 Quem me dera que meu voto se cumpra, e que Deus realize minha esperança!
9 May it please God to crush me, to give his hand free play and do away with me!	9 Que Deus consinta em esmagar-me, que deixe suas mãos cortarem meus dias!
10 This thought, at least, would give me comfort (a thril of joy in unrelenting pain), that I never rebel edagainst the Holy One's decrees.	10 Teria pelo menos um consolo, e exultaria em seu impiedoso tormento, por não ter renegado as palavras do Santo.
11 But have I the strength to go on waiting? And why be patient, when doomed to such an end?	11 Pois, que é minha força para que eu espere, qual é meu fim, para me portar com paciência?
12 Is mine the strength of stone, is my flesh made of bronze?	12 Será que tenho a fortaleza das pedras, e será de bronze minha carne?
13 Can I support myself on nothing? Has not al help deserted me?	13 Não encontro socorro algum, qualquer esperança de salvação me foi tirada.
14 Refuse faithful love to your neighbour and you forsake the fear of Shaddai.	14 Recusar a piedade a um amigo é abandonar o temor ao Todo-poderoso.
15 Like the torrent, my brothers have proved deceptive, as fleeting torrents they flow:	15 Meus irmãos são traiçoeiros como a torrente, como as águas das torrentes que somem.
16 the ice makes their waters turgid when, above them, the snow melts,	16 Rolam agitadas pelo gelo, empoçam-se com a neve derretida.
17 but, come the burning summer, they run dry, they vanish in the heat of the sun.	17 No tempo da seca, elas se esgotam, e ao vir o calor, seu leito seca.
18 Caravans leave the trail to find them, go deep into wastelands, and are lost.	18 as caravanas se desviam das veredas, penetram no deserto e perecem;
19 The caravans of Tema look to them, and on them Sheba's convoys build their hopes.	19 As caravanas de Tema espreitavam, os comboios de Sabá contavam com elas;
20 Their trust brings only embarrassment, they reach them only to be thwarted.	20 ficaram transtornados nas suas suposições: ao chegarem ao lugar, ficaram confusos.
21 And this is how you now treat me, terrified at the sight of me, you take fright.	21 É assim que falhais em cumprir o que de vós se esperava nesta hora; a vista de meu infortúnio vos aterroriza.
22 Have I said to you, 'Give me something, make some present for me at your own cost,	22 Porventura, disse-vos eu: Dai-me qualquer coisa de vossos bens, dai-me presentes,
23 snatch me from the grasp of an oppressor, ransom me from the grip of a violent man'?	23 livrai-me da mão do inimigo, e tirai-me do poder dos violentos?
24 Put me right, and I shal say no more; show me where I have been at fault.	24 Ensinai-me e eu me calarei, mostrai-me em que falhei.
25 Fair comment can be borne without resentment, but what are your strictures aimed at?	25 Como são eficazes as expressões conforme a eqüidade! Mas em que podereis surpreender-me?
26 Do you think mere words deserve censure, desperate speech that the wind blows away?	26 Pretendeis censurar palavras? Palavras desesperadas, leva-as o vento.
27 Soon you wil be haggling over the price of an orphan, and sel ing your friend at bargain price!	27 Seríeis capazes de pôr em leilão até mesmo um órfão, de traficar o vosso amigo!
28 Come, I beg you, look at me: man to man, I shal not lie.	28 Vamos, peço-vos, olhai para mim face a face, não mentirei.
29 Relent then, no harm is done; relent then, since I am upright.	29 Vinde de novo; não sejais injustos; vinde: estou inocente nessa questão.
30 Is evil to be found on my lips? Can I not recognise misfortune when I taste it?	30 Haverá iniqüidade em minha língua? Meu paladar não sabe discernir o mal?
