1 Then from the heart of the tempest Yahweh gave Job his answer. He said:	1 - Prese allora a parlare il Signore a Giobbe dalla procella e disse:
2 Who is this, obscuring my intentions with his ignorant words?	2 «Chi è costui che intreccia sentenze in discorsi da ignorante?
3 Brace yourself like a fighter; I am going to ask the questions, and you are to inform me!	3 Ricingi pur da uomo [prode] i tuoi fianchi, io t'interrogherò e tu rispondimi.
4 Where were you when I laid the earth's foundations? Tel me, since you are so wel -informed!	4 Ov'eri tu quando io gettavo le fondamenta della terra? Dimmelo se hai intelligenza.
5 Who decided its dimensions, do you know? Or who stretched the measuring line across it?	5 Chi fissò le sue dimensioni, che tu sappia? ovvero chi stese sovr'essa la livella?
6 What supports its pil ars at their bases? Who laid its cornerstone	6 Su che cosa stanno infisse le sue basi, o chi gettò la sua pietra angolare,
7 to the joyful concert of the morning stars and unanimous acclaim of the sons of God?	7 mentre m'innalzavano lodi in coro gli astri del mattino, ed esultavano tutti i figli di Dio?
8 Who pent up the sea behind closed doors when it leapt tumultuous from the womb,	8 Chi rinchiuse con porte il mare, quando eruppe come uscendo dall'utero?
9 when I wrapped it in a robe of mist and made black clouds its swaddling bands;	9 quando io gli posi una nube come manto, e di caligine l'avvolsi come in fasce:
10 when I cut out the place I had decreed for it and imposed gates and a bolt?	10 e lo circondai con i miei confini, mettendovi sbarra ed usci,
11 'Come so far,' I said, 'and no further; here your proud waves must break!'	11 e dissi: - Fin qui verrai, ma non passerai oltre, e qui infrangerai i tuoi orgogliosi flutti? -
12 Have you ever in your life given orders to the morning or sent the dawn to its post,	12 Hai tu forse, dacchè sei nato, dato legge al mattino, e insegnato all'aurora il posto suo?
13 to grasp the earth by its edges and shake the wicked out of it?	13 sì che tu afferri e scuota i lembi della terra, e faccia sbalzare gli empii da essa:
14 She turns it as red as a clay seal, she tints it as though it were a dress,	14 trasformandosi ella qual creta d'un sigillo, e diventi [rossa] come un vestimento,
15 stealing the light from evil-doers and breaking the arm raised to strike.	15 venendo sottratta agli empii la loro luce, e il braccio del violento sia spezzato.
16 Have you been right down to the sources of the sea and walked about at the bottom of the Abyss?	16 Sei tu forse entrato nelle profondità del mare, e nel più recondito abisso ti sei tu aggirato?
17 Have you been shown the gates of Death, have you seen the janitors of the Shadow dark as death?	17 Si sono forse dischiuse per te le porte della morte, e le porte tenebrose hai tu vedute?
18 Have you an inkling of the extent of the earth? Tell me al about it if you have!	18 Hai tu considerato la latitudine della terra? Dimmi, se sai tutto questo.
19 Which is the way to the home of the Light, and where does darkness live? -	19 Qual è la strada per ove dimora la luce, e la tenebra dove sta di posto?
20 You could then show them the way to their proper places, you could put them on the path homeagain!	20 onde tu conduca ciascuna ai suoi confini, essendo esperto dei sentieri di sua dimora.
21 If you do know, you must have been born when they were, you must be very old by now!	21 Sapevi tu allora che dovevi nascere? e conoscevi tu il numero dei giorni tuoi?
22 Have you visited the place where the snow is stored? Have you seen the stores of hail,	22 Sei tu entrato nei depositi della neve, e i depositi della grandine hai tu visitati?
23 which I keep for times of distress, for days of battle and war?	23 quelli che ho preparato per i tempi di guerra, per il giorno di mischia e di battaglia?
24 From which direction does the lightning fork, where in the world does the east wind blow itself out?	24 Qual è la via per cui si diffonde la luce, e s'espande il calore sulla terra?
25 Who bores a channel for the downpour or clears the way for the rol ing thunder	25 Chi ha segnato il corso alla pioggia impetuosa, e la strada al nembo tonante,
26 so that rain may fal on lands where no one lives, and the deserts void of human dwel ing,	26 sì che piova su contrada ove l'uomo non è, sul deserto ove nessun mortale dimora,
27 to meet the needs of the lonely wastes and make grass sprout on the thirsty ground?	27 per inondare il luogo impervio e desolatoe far germogliare erbe verdeggianti?
28 Has the rain a father? Who begets the dewdrops?	28 Chi è mai il padre della pioggia, o chi ha generato le stille della rugiada?
29 What womb brings forth the ice, who gives birth to the frost of heaven,	29 Dall'utero di chi, è uscito il ghiaccio, e la brina del cielo chi l'ha generata,
30 when the waters grow hard as stone and the surface of the deep congeals?	30 [allorchè] come pietra le acque s'induriscono, e la superficie dell'abisso si restringe?
31 Can you fasten the harness of the Pleiades, or untie Orion's bands?	31 Puoi tu forse legare le folgoranti stelle Pleiadi, ovver disperdere il giro di Arturo?
32 Can you guide the Crown season by season and show the Bear and its cubs which way to go?	32 Fai uscire forse tu la stella mattutina a suo tempo, e quella vespertina fai sorgere sui figli della terra?
33 Have you grasped the celestial laws? Could you make their writ run on the earth?	33 Conosci tu forse l'ordine del cielo, e determini la sua influenza sulla terra?
34 Can your voice carry as far as the clouds and make the pent-up waters do your bidding?	34 Alzi tu forse verso la nube la tua voce, affinchè un profluvio d'acqua ti ricopra?
35 Will lightning flashes come at your command and answer, 'Here we are'?	35 Scagli tu forse i fulmini, che partanoe ritornando ti dicano: - Eccoci -?
36 Who endowed the ibis with wisdom and gave the cock his intel igence?	36 Chi ha posto in seno all'uomo la sapienza? ovvero chi ha dato al gallo intelligenza?
37 Whose skil details every cloud and tilts the water-skins of heaven	37 Chi spiegherà la relazione dei cieli, e gli otri dei cieli chi può svuotare,
38 until the dust solidifies and the cracks in the ground close up?	38 allorchè si rassoda [per siccità] la polvere sulla terra, e le zolle si ammassano insieme?
39 Do you go hunting prey for the lioness; do you satisfy the hunger of young lions	39 Prendi tu forse la preda per la leonessa, e la brama dei leoncelli tu sazii,
40 where they crouch in their den, waiting eagerly in the bushes?	40 allorchè s'accovacciano nelle tane, e da dentro alle caverne stanno ad insidiare?
41 Who makes provision for the raven when his little ones cry out to God craning their necks in search offood?	41 Chi fornisce nutrimento al corvo, quando i suoi piccoli gridano verso Dio, vagolando perchè non hanno cibo?
