1 Then from the heart of the tempest Yahweh gave Job his answer. He said:	1 Ma il Signore di mezzo al turbine parlò a Giobbe, e disse:
2 Who is this, obscuring my intentions with his ignorant words?	2 Chi è costui, che avviluppa sentenze in ragionamenti da ignorante?
3 Brace yourself like a fighter; I am going to ask the questions, and you are to inform me!	3 Cingi da uomo forte i tuoi fianchi: io ti interrogherò, e tu rispondimi.
4 Where were you when I laid the earth's foundations? Tel me, since you are so wel -informed!	4 Dov' eri tu quand'io gettava i fondamenti della terra? dimmelo se ne sai tanto.
5 Who decided its dimensions, do you know? Or who stretched the measuring line across it?	5 Sai tu chi ne fissò le misure? e chi tese sopra di essa il livello?
6 What supports its pil ars at their bases? Who laid its cornerstone	6 Qual hanno appoggio le basi di lei? e chi pose la sua pietra angolare,
7 to the joyful concert of the morning stars and unanimous acclaim of the sons of God?	7 Allorché davano laude a me tutte insieme le stelle della mattina, e voci di giubilo alzavano tutti i figliuoli di Dio?
8 Who pent up the sea behind closed doors when it leapt tumultuous from the womb,	8 Chi chiuse le porte al mare quand'ei scappò fuora, come uscendo dall'alvo materno?
9 when I wrapped it in a robe of mist and made black clouds its swaddling bands;	9 Quand'io la nube gli diedi per vestimento, e nella caligine lo rinvolsi, come un bambino nelle sue fasce?
10 when I cut out the place I had decreed for it and imposed gates and a bolt?	10 Lo ristrinsi dentro a' confini posti da me, e gli diedi sue porte, e contrafforti;
11 'Come so far,' I said, 'and no further; here your proud waves must break!'	11 E dissi: Sin qua tu verrai, ma non passerai più innanzi, e qui frangerai gli orgogliosi tuoi flutti.
12 Have you ever in your life given orders to the morning or sent the dawn to its post,	12 Forse dopo che sei al mondo desti legge alla luce della mattina, e all'aurora mostrasti il luogo onde uscir fuori?
13 to grasp the earth by its edges and shake the wicked out of it?	13 Hai tu scossi colle tue mani i cardini della terra, e ne hai tu sbalzati gli empj?
14 She turns it as red as a clay seal, she tints it as though it were a dress,	14 Tornerà come fango il sigillo, e sussisterà come una veste:
15 stealing the light from evil-doers and breaking the arm raised to strike.	15 Sarà agli empj tolto il loro splendore, e la eccelsa loro possanza sarà annichilata.
16 Have you been right down to the sources of the sea and walked about at the bottom of the Abyss?	16 Se' tu entrato nel fondo del mare, e hai tu passeggiato nel profondo dell'abisso?
17 Have you been shown the gates of Death, have you seen the janitors of the Shadow dark as death?	17 Son elleno state aperte a te le porte di morte, e que' tenebrosi liminari gli hai tu veduti?

19 Which is the way to the home of the Light, and where does darkness live? -	19 Dove sia che abiti la luce, e qual sia il ripostiglio delle tenebre:
20 You could then show them the way to their proper places, you could put them on the path homeagain!	20 Onde e l'una, e le altre tu condur possa a' luoghi loro, sapendo la via delle case loro.
21 If you do know, you must have been born when they were, you must be very old by now!	21 Sapevi tu una volta di aver a nascere? Eri tu informato del numero de' tuoi giorni?
22 Have you visited the place where the snow is stored? Have you seen the stores of hail,	22 Se' tu entrato dove le nevi si serbano, ed hai tu veduto dove si raccolgan le grandini
23 which I keep for times of distress, for days of battle and war?	23 Preparate da me per farne uso contro il nemico, pel giorno di guerra, e di conflitto?
24 From which direction does the lightning fork, where in the world does the east wind blow itself out?	24 Per quale strada si sparge la luce, e il calore si spande sopra la terra?
25 Who bores a channel for the downpour or clears the way for the rol ing thunder	25 Chi segnò il corso alla impetuosa pioggia, e la strada al tuono romoreggiante?
26 so that rain may fal on lands where no one lives, and the deserts void of human dwel ing,	26 E fece piovere sulla terra deserta priva di abitatore, dove nissun de' mortali pone sua stanza,
27 to meet the needs of the lonely wastes and make grass sprout on the thirsty ground?	27 Inondandola, benché inabitabile, e desolata, affinchè verdi erbette produca?
28 Has the rain a father? Who begets the dewdrops?	28 Chi è il padre della pioggia, e chi generò le gocciole della rugiada?
29 What womb brings forth the ice, who gives birth to the frost of heaven,	29 Da qual seno uscì il ghiaccio, e chi dall'aria mandò il gelo?
30 when the waters grow hard as stone and the surface of the deep congeals?	30 Le acque si indurano come pietre, e la superficie del mar si rappiglia.
31 Can you fasten the harness of the Pleiades, or untie Orion's bands?	31 Potrai tu forse legare le stelle folgoreggianti delle Pleiadi, o sconvolgere il corso di Orione?
32 Can you guide the Crown season by season and show the Bear and its cubs which way to go?	32 Se' tu forse, che fai apparire a suo tempo la stella del mattino, o che fai nascere l'Espero sopra i figliuoli degli uomini?
33 Have you grasped the celestial laws? Could you make their writ run on the earth?	33 Intendi tu l'ordine del cielo, e stabilirai le ragioni di lui sopra la terra?
34 Can your voice carry as far as the clouds and make the pent-up waters do your bidding?	34 Alzerai tu la tua voce alla nube per far venire sopra di te un diluvio di acque?
35 Will lightning flashes come at your command and answer, 'Here we are'?	35 Spedirai tu i folgori, e questi anderanno, e ti diranno al ritorno: Siamo a' tuoi cenni?
36 Who endowed the ibis with wisdom and gave the cock his intel igence?	36 Chi nel petto dell'uomo pose la saggezza, e chi al gallo diede discernimento?
37 Whose skil details every cloud and tilts the water-skins of heaven	37 Chi esporrà il governo de' cieli, e farà tacere la celeste armonia.
38 until the dust solidifies and the cracks in the ground close up?	38 Cosi fu fin da quando si rappesa la polvere sopra la terra, e le sue zolle ai rassodarono.
39 Do you go hunting prey for the lioness; do you satisfy the hunger of young lions	39 Anderai tu a far preda per la lionessa, e satollerai le brame de' suoi lioncini,
40 where they crouch in their den, waiting eagerly in the bushes?	40 Allorché giaciono nelle tane, e stanno ansiosi per le caverne?
41 Who makes provision for the raven when his little ones cry out to God craning their necks in search offood?	41 Chi preparò il suo nudrimento al corvo, allorché i suoi pulcini gracchiano verso Dio, e van qua, e là, perché non han da mangiare?
