NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 Then from the heart of the tempest Yahweh gave Job his answer. He said:	1 Allora il Signore rispose a Giobbe di mezzo al turbine così:
2 Who is this, obscuring my intentions with his ignorant words?	2 "Chi è colui che denigra la provvidenza con parole insensate?
3 Brace yourself like a fighter; I am going to ask the questions, and you are to inform me!	3 Cingiti i fianchi come un prode: ti interrogherò e tu mi istruirai.
4 Where were you when I laid the earth's foundations? Tel me, since you are so wel -informed!	4 Dov'eri quando io mettevo le basi della terra? Dillo, se hai tanta sapienza!
5 Who decided its dimensions, do you know? Or who stretched the measuring line across it?	5 Chi fissò le sue proporzioni, se lo sai, e chi tracciò per essa la linea?
6 What supports its pil ars at their bases? Who laid its cornerstone	6 Dove affondano i suoi pilastri, o chi pose la sua pietra angolare,
7 to the joyful concert of the morning stars and unanimous acclaim of the sons of God?	7 mentre le stelle del mattino giubilavano unite, e plaudivano tutti i figli di Dio?
8 Who pent up the sea behind closed doors when it leapt tumultuous from the womb,	8 Chi racchiuse tra due battenti il mare, quando uscì impetuoso dal seno materno,
9 when I wrapped it in a robe of mist and made black clouds its swaddling bands;	9 quando gli diedi le nubi per vestirsi e la foschia per fasciarsi?
10 when I cut out the place I had decreed for it and imposed gates and a bolt?	10 Poi gli imposi un limite, fissando catenacci e porte.
11 'Come so far,' I said, 'and no further; here your proud waves must break!'	11 E gli ingiunsi: "Fin qui arriverai e non oltre, qui si arresterà la superbia delle tue onde!".
12 Have you ever in your life given orders to the morning or sent the dawn to its post,	12 Hai tu un solo dei tuoi giorni comandato al mattino e assegnato all'aurora il suo posto,
13 to grasp the earth by its edges and shake the wicked out of it?	13 perché afferri la terra ai suoi angoli e ne scuota i malvagi?
14 She turns it as red as a clay seal, she tints it as though it were a dress,	14 Allora la terra si trasforma come creta sotto il sigillo, e si tinge come un vestito.
15 stealing the light from evil-doers and breaking the arm raised to strike.	15 Allora è negata al malvagio la luce di essa ed è spezzato il braccio altero.
16 Have you been right down to the sources of the sea and walked about at the bottom of the Abyss?	16 Sei mai giunto alle sorgenti del mare, o hai passeggiato sul fondo dell'abisso?
17 Have you been shown the gates of Death, have you seen the janitors of the Shadow dark as death?	17 Ti sono state indicate le porte della morte e hai visto i portali dell'ombra funerea?
18 Have you an inkling of the extent of the earth? Tell me al about it if you have!	18 Ti sei reso conto dell'ampiezza della terra? Dillo, se sai tutto questo!
19 Which is the way to the home of the Light, and where does darkness live? -	19 Per quale via si va dove abita la luce? e le tenebre dove hanno dimora?
20 You could then show them the way to their proper places, you could put them on the path homeagain!	20 Potresti tu condurle al loro posto, dato che conosci il sentiero delle loro case?
21 If you do know, you must have been born when they were, you must be very old by now!	21 Tu lo sai, perché allora eri già nato, ed il numero dei tuoi anni è assai grande.
22 Have you visited the place where the snow is stored? Have you seen the stores of hail,	22 Sei mai entrato nei serbatoi della neve, hai potuto vedere i depositi della grandine,
23 which I keep for times of distress, for days of battle and war?	23 che io tengo in serbo per il tempo della tribolazione, per il giorno di lotta e di battaglia?
24 From which direction does the lightning fork, where in the world does the east wind blow itself out?	24 Da quale parte si diffonde la luce? Per dove lo scirocco invade la terra?
25 Who bores a channel for the downpour or clears the way for the rol ing thunder	25 Chi ha scavato il canale per le acque torrenziali, e una strada alla nube tonante,
26 so that rain may fal on lands where no one lives, and the deserts void of human dwel ing,	26 per far piovere su una terra disabitata, su un deserto, dove non c'è uomo,
27 to meet the needs of the lonely wastes and make grass sprout on the thirsty ground?	27 per saziare regioni desolate e squallide e far germogliare e spuntare l'erba?
28 Has the rain a father? Who begets the dewdrops?	28 La pioggia ha forse un padre? Chi genera le gocce di rugiada?
29 What womb brings forth the ice, who gives birth to the frost of heaven,	29 Da quale seno è nato il ghiaccio, e la brina del cielo chi l'ha generata?
30 when the waters grow hard as stone and the surface of the deep congeals?	30 Le acque si solidificano come pietra e la faccia dell'abisso si raggela.
31 Can you fasten the harness of the Pleiades, or untie Orion's bands?	31 Puoi tu annodare i legami delle Pleiadi, o sciogliere i vincoli di Orione?
32 Can you guide the Crown season by season and show the Bear and its cubs which way to go?	32 Fai tu spuntare la costellazione a suo tempo, e guidi tu l'Orsa con i suoi piccini?
33 Have you grasped the celestial laws? Could you make their writ run on the earth?	33 Conosci forse le leggi del cielo e determini tu i loro influssi sulla terra?
34 Can your voice carry as far as the clouds and make the pent-up waters do your bidding?	34 Puoi tu dar ordini alle nubi, perché una massa d'acqua ti inondi?
35 Will lightning flashes come at your command and answer, 'Here we are'?	35 Scagli tu i fulmini e partono dicendoti: "Eccoci"?
36 Who endowed the ibis with wisdom and gave the cock his intel igence?	36 Chi ha concesso all'ibis la sapienza, e chi ha dato al gallo intelligenza?
37 Whose skil details every cloud and tilts the water-skins of heaven	37 Chi può contare le nubi con esattezza, e chi riversa gli otri del cielo,
38 until the dust solidifies and the cracks in the ground close up?	38 quando la polvere si fonde in una massa e le zolle si attaccano insieme?
39 Do you go hunting prey for the lioness; do you satisfy the hunger of young lions	39 Vai tu a caccia di preda per la leonessa e sazi la fame dei leoncelli,
40 where they crouch in their den, waiting eagerly in the bushes?	40 quando sono accovacciati nelle tane, o stanno in agguato fra le macchie?
41 Who makes provision for the raven when his little ones cry out to God craning their necks in search offood?	41 Chi procaccia il nutrimento al corvo, quando i suoi nati gridano verso Dio e si agitano per mancanza di cibo?
