Job 38

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLIA
1 Then from the heart of the tempest Yahweh gave Job his answer. He said:	1 Yahveh respondió a Job desde el seno de la tempestad y dijo:
2 Who is this, obscuring my intentions with his ignorant words?	2 ¿Quién es éste que empaña el Consejo con razones sin sentido?
3 Brace yourself like a fighter; I am going to ask the questions, and you are to inform me!	3 Ciñe tus lomos como un bravo: voy a interrogarte, y tú me instruirás.
4 Where were you when I laid the earth's foundations? Tel me, since you are so wel -informed!	4 Dónde estabas tú cuando fundaba yo la tierra? Indícalo, si sabes la verdad.
5 Who decided its dimensions, do you know? Or who stretched the measuring line across it?	5 ¿Quién fijó sus medidas? ¿lo sabrías? ¿quién tiró el cordel sobre ella?
6 What supports its pil ars at their bases? Who laid its cornerstone	6 ¿Sobre qué se afirmaron sus bases? ¿quién asentó su piedra angular,
7 to the joyful concert of the morning stars and unanimous acclaim of the sons of God?	7 entre el clamor a coro de las estrellas del alba y las aclamaciones de todos los Hijos de Dios?
8 Who pent up the sea behind closed doors when it leapt tumultuous from the womb,	8 ¿Quién encerró el mar con doble puerta, cuando del seno materno salía borbotando;
9 when I wrapped it in a robe of mist and made black clouds its swaddling bands;	9 cuando le puse una nube por vestido y del nubarrón hice sus pañales;
10 when I cut out the place I had decreed for it and imposed gates and a bolt?	10 cuando le tracé sus linderos y coloqué puertas y cerrojos?
11 'Come so far,' I said, 'and no further; here your proud waves must break!'	11 «¡Llegarás hasta aquí, no más allá - le dije -, aquí se romperá el orgullo de tus olas!»
12 Have you ever in your life given orders to the morning or sent the dawn to its post,	12 ¿Has mandado, una vez en tu vida, a la mañana, has asignado a la aurora su lugar,
13 to grasp the earth by its edges and shake the wicked out of it?	13 para que agarre a la tierra por los bordes y de ella sacuda a los malvados?
14 She turns it as red as a clay seal, she tints it as though it were a dress,	14 Ella se trueca en arcilla de sello, se tiñe lo mismo que un vestido.
15 stealing the light from evil-doers and breaking the arm raised to strike.	15 Se quita entonces su luz a los malvados, y queda roto el brazo que se alzaba.
16 Have you been right down to the sources of the sea and walked about at the bottom of the Abyss?	16 ¿Has penetrado hasta las fuentes del mar? ¿has circulado por el fondo del Abismo?
17 Have you been shown the gates of Death, have you seen the janitors of the Shadow dark as death?	17 ¿Se te han mostrado las puertas de la Muerte? ¿has visto las puertas del país de la Sombra?
18 Have you an inkling of the extent of the earth? Tell me al about it if you have!	18 ¿Has calculado las anchuras de la tierra? Cuenta, si es que sabes, todo esto.
19 Which is the way to the home of the Light, and where does darkness live? -	19 ¿Por dónde se va a la morada de la luz? y las tinieblas, ¿dónde tienen su sitio?,
20 You could then show them the way to their proper places, you could put them on the path homeagain!	20 para que puedas llevarlas a su término, guiarlas por los senderos de su casa.
21 If you do know, you must have been born when they were, you must be very old by now!	21 Si lo sabes, ¡es que ya habías nacido entonces, y bien larga es la cuenta de tus días!
22 Have you visited the place where the snow is stored? Have you seen the stores of hail,	22 ¿Has llegado a los depósitos de nieve? ¿Has visto las reservas de granizo,
23 which I keep for times of distress, for days of battle and war?	23 que yo guardo para el tiempo de angustia, para el día de batalla y de combate?
24 From which direction does the lightning fork, where in the world does the east wind blow itself out?	24 ¿Por qué camino se reparte la luz, o se despliega el solano por la tierra?
25 Who bores a channel for the downpour or clears the way for the rol ing thunder	25 ¿Quién abre un canal al aguacero, a los giros de los truenos un camino,
26 so that rain may fal on lands where no one lives, and the deserts void of human dwel ing,	26 para llover sobre tierra sin hombre, sobre el desierto donde no hay un alma,
27 to meet the needs of the lonely wastes and make grass sprout on the thirsty ground?	27 para abrevar a las soledades desoladas y hacer brotar en la estepa hierba verde?
28 Has the rain a father? Who begets the dewdrops?	28 ¿Tiene padre la lluvia? ¿quién engendra las gotas de rocío?
29 What womb brings forth the ice, who gives birth to the frost of heaven,	29 ¿De qué seno sale el hielo? ¿quién da a luz la escarcha del cielo,
30 when the waters grow hard as stone and the surface of the deep congeals?	30 cuando las aguas se aglutinan como piedra y se congela la superficie del abismo?
31 Can you fasten the harness of the Pleiades, or untie Orion's bands?	31 ¿Puedes tú anudar los lazos de las Pléyades o desatar las cuerdas de Orión?
32 Can you guide the Crown season by season and show the Bear and its cubs which way to go?	32 ¿Haces salir la Corona a su tiempo? ¿conduces a la Osa con sus crías?
33 Have you grasped the celestial laws? Could you make their writ run on the earth?	33 ¿Conoces las leyes de los Cielos? ¿aplicas su fuero en la tierra?
34 Can your voice carry as far as the clouds and make the pent-up waters do your bidding?	34 ¿Levantas tu voz hasta las nubes?, la masa de las aguas, ¿te obedece?
35 Will lightning flashes come at your command and answer, 'Here we are'?	35 A tu orden, ¿los relámpagos parten, diciéndote: «Aquí estamos»?
36 Who endowed the ibis with wisdom and gave the cock his intel igence?	36 ¿Quién puso en el ibis la sabiduría? ¿quién dio al gallo inteligencia?
37 Whose skil details every cloud and tilts the water-skins of heaven	37 ¿Quién tiene pericia para contar las nubes? ¿quién inclina los odres de los cielos,
38 until the dust solidifies and the cracks in the ground close up?	38 cuando se aglutina el polvo en una masa y los terrones se pegan entre sí?
39 Do you go hunting prey for the lioness; do you satisfy the hunger of young lions	39 ¿Cazas tú acaso la presa a la leona? ¿calmas el hambre de los leoncillos,
40 where they crouch in their den, waiting eagerly in the bushes?	40 cuando en sus guaridas están acurrucados, o en los matorrales al acecho?
41 Who makes provision for the raven when his little ones cry out to God craning their necks in search offood?	41 ¿Quién prepara su provisión al cuervo, cuando sus crías gritan hacia Dios, cuando se estiran faltos de comida?
