1 Then from the heart of the tempest Yahweh gave Job his answer. He said:	1 Il Signore prese a dire a Giobbe in mezzo all’uragano:
2 Who is this, obscuring my intentions with his ignorant words?	2 «Chi è mai costui che oscura il mio piano con discorsi da ignorante?
3 Brace yourself like a fighter; I am going to ask the questions, and you are to inform me!	3 Cingiti i fianchi come un prode: io t’interrogherò e tu mi istruirai!
4 Where were you when I laid the earth's foundations? Tel me, since you are so wel -informed!	4 Quando ponevo le fondamenta della terra, tu dov’eri? Dimmelo, se sei tanto intelligente!
5 Who decided its dimensions, do you know? Or who stretched the measuring line across it?	5 Chi ha fissato le sue dimensioni, se lo sai, o chi ha teso su di essa la corda per misurare?
6 What supports its pil ars at their bases? Who laid its cornerstone	6 Dove sono fissate le sue basi o chi ha posto la sua pietra angolare,
7 to the joyful concert of the morning stars and unanimous acclaim of the sons of God?	7 mentre gioivano in coro le stelle del mattino e acclamavano tutti i figli di Dio?
8 Who pent up the sea behind closed doors when it leapt tumultuous from the womb,	8 Chi ha chiuso tra due porte il mare, quando usciva impetuoso dal seno materno,
9 when I wrapped it in a robe of mist and made black clouds its swaddling bands;	9 quando io lo vestivo di nubi e lo fasciavo di una nuvola oscura,
10 when I cut out the place I had decreed for it and imposed gates and a bolt?	10 quando gli ho fissato un limite, e gli ho messo chiavistello e due porte
11 'Come so far,' I said, 'and no further; here your proud waves must break!'	11 dicendo: “Fin qui giungerai e non oltre e qui s’infrangerà l’orgoglio delle tue onde”?
12 Have you ever in your life given orders to the morning or sent the dawn to its post,	12 Da quando vivi, hai mai comandato al mattino e assegnato il posto all’aurora,
13 to grasp the earth by its edges and shake the wicked out of it?	13 perché afferri la terra per i lembi e ne scuota via i malvagi,
14 She turns it as red as a clay seal, she tints it as though it were a dress,	14 ed essa prenda forma come creta premuta da sigillo e si tinga come un vestito,
15 stealing the light from evil-doers and breaking the arm raised to strike.	15 e sia negata ai malvagi la loro luce e sia spezzato il braccio che si alza a colpire?
16 Have you been right down to the sources of the sea and walked about at the bottom of the Abyss?	16 Sei mai giunto alle sorgenti del mare e nel fondo dell’abisso hai tu passeggiato?
17 Have you been shown the gates of Death, have you seen the janitors of the Shadow dark as death?	17 Ti sono state svelate le porte della morte e hai visto le porte dell’ombra tenebrosa?
18 Have you an inkling of the extent of the earth? Tell me al about it if you have!	18 Hai tu considerato quanto si estende la terra? Dillo, se sai tutto questo!
19 Which is the way to the home of the Light, and where does darkness live? -	19 Qual è la strada dove abita la luce e dove dimorano le tenebre,
20 You could then show them the way to their proper places, you could put them on the path homeagain!	20 perché tu le possa ricondurre dentro i loro confini e sappia insegnare loro la via di casa?
21 If you do know, you must have been born when they were, you must be very old by now!	21 Certo, tu lo sai, perché allora eri già nato e il numero dei tuoi giorni è assai grande!
22 Have you visited the place where the snow is stored? Have you seen the stores of hail,	22 Sei mai giunto fino ai depositi della neve, hai mai visto i serbatoi della grandine,
23 which I keep for times of distress, for days of battle and war?	23 che io riserbo per l’ora della sciagura, per il giorno della guerra e della battaglia?
24 From which direction does the lightning fork, where in the world does the east wind blow itself out?	24 Per quali vie si diffonde la luce, da dove il vento d’oriente invade la terra?
25 Who bores a channel for the downpour or clears the way for the rol ing thunder	25 Chi ha scavato canali agli acquazzoni e una via al lampo tonante,
26 so that rain may fal on lands where no one lives, and the deserts void of human dwel ing,	26 per far piovere anche sopra una terra spopolata, su un deserto dove non abita nessuno,
27 to meet the needs of the lonely wastes and make grass sprout on the thirsty ground?	27 per dissetare regioni desolate e squallide e far sbocciare germogli verdeggianti?
28 Has the rain a father? Who begets the dewdrops?	28 Ha forse un padre la pioggia? O chi fa nascere le gocce della rugiada?
29 What womb brings forth the ice, who gives birth to the frost of heaven,	29 Dal qual grembo esce il ghiaccio e la brina del cielo chi la genera,
30 when the waters grow hard as stone and the surface of the deep congeals?	30 quando come pietra le acque si induriscono e la faccia dell’abisso si raggela?
31 Can you fasten the harness of the Pleiades, or untie Orion's bands?	31 Puoi tu annodare i legami delle Plèiadi o sciogliere i vincoli di Orione?
32 Can you guide the Crown season by season and show the Bear and its cubs which way to go?	32 Puoi tu far spuntare a suo tempo le costellazioni o guidare l’Orsa insieme con i suoi figli?
33 Have you grasped the celestial laws? Could you make their writ run on the earth?	33 Conosci tu le leggi del cielo o ne applichi le norme sulla terra?
34 Can your voice carry as far as the clouds and make the pent-up waters do your bidding?	34 Puoi tu alzare la voce fino alle nubi per farti inondare da una massa d’acqua?
35 Will lightning flashes come at your command and answer, 'Here we are'?	35 Scagli tu i fulmini ed essi partono dicendoti: “Eccoci!”?
36 Who endowed the ibis with wisdom and gave the cock his intel igence?	36 Chi mai ha elargito all’ibis la sapienza o chi ha dato al gallo intelligenza?
37 Whose skil details every cloud and tilts the water-skins of heaven	37 Chi mai è in grado di contare con esattezza le nubi e chi può riversare gli otri del cielo,
38 until the dust solidifies and the cracks in the ground close up?	38 quando la polvere del suolo diventa fango e le zolle si attaccano insieme?
39 Do you go hunting prey for the lioness; do you satisfy the hunger of young lions	39 Sei forse tu che vai a caccia di preda per la leonessa e sazi la fame dei leoncelli,
40 where they crouch in their den, waiting eagerly in the bushes?	40 quando sono accovacciati nelle tane o stanno in agguato nei nascondigli?
41 Who makes provision for the raven when his little ones cry out to God craning their necks in search offood?	41 Chi prepara al corvo il suo pasto, quando i suoi piccoli gridano verso Dio e vagano qua e là per mancanza di cibo?
