Job 38

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 Then from the heart of the tempest Yahweh gave Job his answer. He said:	1 Yahvé répondit à Job du sein de la tempête et dit:
2 Who is this, obscuring my intentions with his ignorant words?	2 Quel est celui-là qui obscurcit mes plans par des propos dénués de sens?
3 Brace yourself like a fighter; I am going to ask the questions, and you are to inform me!	3 Ceins tes reins comme un brave: je vais t'interroger et tu m'instruiras.
4 Where were you when I laid the earth's foundations? Tel me, since you are so wel -informed!	4 Où étais-tu quand je fondai la terre? Parle, si ton savoir est éclairé.
5 Who decided its dimensions, do you know? Or who stretched the measuring line across it?	5 Qui en fixa les mesures, le saurais-tu, ou qui tendit sur elle le cordeau?
6 What supports its pil ars at their bases? Who laid its cornerstone	6 Sur quel appui s'enfoncent ses socles? Qui posa sa pierre angulaire,
7 to the joyful concert of the morning stars and unanimous acclaim of the sons of God?	7 parmi le concert joyeux des étoiles du matin et les acclamations unanimes des Fils de Dieu?
8 Who pent up the sea behind closed doors when it leapt tumultuous from the womb,	8 Qui enferma la mer à deux battants, quand elle sortit du sein, bondissante;
9 when I wrapped it in a robe of mist and made black clouds its swaddling bands;	9 quand je mis sur elle une nuée pour vêtement et fis des nuages sombres ses langes;
10 when I cut out the place I had decreed for it and imposed gates and a bolt?	10 quand je découpai pour elle sa limite et plaçai portes et verrou?
11 'Come so far,' I said, 'and no further; here your proud waves must break!'	11 "Tu n'iras pas plus loin, lui dis-je, ici se brisera l'orgueil de tes flots!"
12 Have you ever in your life given orders to the morning or sent the dawn to its post,	12 As-tu, une fois dans ta vie, commandé au matin? Assigné l'aurore à son poste,
13 to grasp the earth by its edges and shake the wicked out of it?	13 pour qu'elle saisisse la terre par les bords et en secoue les méchants?
14 She turns it as red as a clay seal, she tints it as though it were a dress,	14 Alors elle la change en argile de sceau et la teint comme un vêtement;
15 stealing the light from evil-doers and breaking the arm raised to strike.	15 elle ôte aux méchants leur lumière, brise le bras qui se levait.
16 Have you been right down to the sources of the sea and walked about at the bottom of the Abyss?	16 As-tu pénétré jusqu'aux sources marines, circulé au fond de l'Abîme?
17 Have you been shown the gates of Death, have you seen the janitors of the Shadow dark as death?	17 Les portes de la Mort te furent-elles montrées, as-tu vu les portiers du pays de l'Ombre?
18 Have you an inkling of the extent of the earth? Tell me al about it if you have!	18 As-tu quelque idée des étendues terrestres? Raconte, si tu sais tout cela.
19 Which is the way to the home of the Light, and where does darkness live? -	19 De quel côté habite la lumière, et les ténèbres, où résident-elles,
20 You could then show them the way to their proper places, you could put them on the path homeagain!	20 pour que tu puisses les conduire dans leur domaine, les acheminer vers leur demeure?
21 If you do know, you must have been born when they were, you must be very old by now!	21 Si tu le sais, c'est qu'alors tu étais né, et tu comptes des jours bien nombreux!
22 Have you visited the place where the snow is stored? Have you seen the stores of hail,	22 Es-tu parvenu jusqu'aux dépôts de neige? As-tu vu les réserves de grêle,
23 which I keep for times of distress, for days of battle and war?	23 que je ménage pour les temps de détresse, pour les jours de bataille et de guerre?
24 From which direction does the lightning fork, where in the world does the east wind blow itself out?	24 De quel côté se divise l'éclair, où se répand sur terre le vent d'est?
25 Who bores a channel for the downpour or clears the way for the rol ing thunder	25 Qui perce un canal pour l'averse, fraie la route aux roulements du tonnerre,
26 so that rain may fal on lands where no one lives, and the deserts void of human dwel ing,	26 pour faire pleuvoir sur une terre sans hommes, sur un désert que nul n'habite,
27 to meet the needs of the lonely wastes and make grass sprout on the thirsty ground?	27 pour abreuver les solitudes désolées, faire germer l'herbe sur la steppe?
28 Has the rain a father? Who begets the dewdrops?	28 La pluie a-t-elle un père, ou qui engendre les gouttes de rosée?
29 What womb brings forth the ice, who gives birth to the frost of heaven,	29 De quel ventre sort la glace, et le givre des cieux, qui l'enfante,
30 when the waters grow hard as stone and the surface of the deep congeals?	30 quand les eaux se durcissent comme pierre et que devient compacte la surface de l'abîme?
31 Can you fasten the harness of the Pleiades, or untie Orion's bands?	31 Peux-tu nouer les liens des Pléiades, desserrer les cordes d'Orion,
32 Can you guide the Crown season by season and show the Bear and its cubs which way to go?	32 amener la Couronne en son temps, conduire l'Ourse avec ses petits?
33 Have you grasped the celestial laws? Could you make their writ run on the earth?	33 Connais-tu les lois des Cieux, appliques-tu leur charte sur terre?
34 Can your voice carry as far as the clouds and make the pent-up waters do your bidding?	34 Ta voix s'élève-t-elle jusqu'aux nuées et la masse des eaux t'obéit-elle?
35 Will lightning flashes come at your command and answer, 'Here we are'?	35 Sur ton ordre, les éclairs partent-ils, en te disant: "Nous voici?"
36 Who endowed the ibis with wisdom and gave the cock his intel igence?	36 Qui a mis dans l'ibis la sagesse, donné au coq l'intelligence?
37 Whose skil details every cloud and tilts the water-skins of heaven	37 Qui dénombre les nuages avec compétence et incline les outres des cieux,
38 until the dust solidifies and the cracks in the ground close up?	38 tandis que la poussière s'agglomère et que collent ensemble les glèbes?
39 Do you go hunting prey for the lioness; do you satisfy the hunger of young lions	39 Chasses-tu pour la lionne une proie, apaises-tu l'appétit des lionceaux,
40 where they crouch in their den, waiting eagerly in the bushes?	40 quand ils sont tapis dans leurs tanières, aux aguets dans le fourré?
41 Who makes provision for the raven when his little ones cry out to God craning their necks in search offood?	41 Qui prépare au corbeau sa provende, lorsque ses petits crient vers Dieu et se dressent sans nourriture?
