NEW JERUSALEM | DOUAI-RHEIMS |
---|---|
At this, my very heart quakes and leaps out of its place. | 1 At this my heart trembleth, and is moved out of its place. |
Listen, oh listen, to the blast of his voice and the sound that issues from his mouth. | 2 Hear ye attentively the terror of his voice, and the sound that cometh out of his mouth. |
His lightning is hurled across the heaven, it strikes to the extremities of earth. | 3 He beholdeth under all the heavens, and his light is upon the ends of the earth. |
After it comes a roaring sound, God thunders with majestic voice. He does not check his thunderboltsuntil his voice resounds no more. | 4 After it a noise shall roar, he shall thunder with the voice of his majesty, and shall not be found out, when his voice shall be heard. |
Yes, certainly God shows us marvels and does great deeds that we cannot understand. | 5 God shall thunder wonderfully with his voice, he that doth great and unsearchable things. |
When he says to the snow, 'Fal on the earth!' to the showers, 'Now rain hard!' | 6 He commandeth the snow to go down upon the earth, and the winter rain, and the shower of his strength. |
he brings al human activity to a standstil , for everyone to acknowledge his work. | 7 He sealeth up the hand of all men, that every one may know his works. |
The animals go back to their dens and take shelter in their lairs. | 8 Then the beast shall go into his covert, and shall abide in his den. |
The storm wind comes from the Mansion of the South, and the north winds usher in the cold. | 9 Out of the inner parts shall a tempest come, and cold out of the north. |
At the breath of God, ice comes next, the surface of the waters hardens over. | 10 When God bloweth there cometh frost, and again the waters are poured out abundantly. |
He weighs the clouds down with moisture, and the storm clouds radiate his lightning. | 11 Corn desireth clouds, and the clouds spread their light : |
He himself guides their wheeling motion presiding over their seasonal changes. They carry out hisorders to the letter al over this earthly world. | 12 Which go round about, whithersoever the will of him that governeth them shall lead them, to whatsoever he shall command them upon the face of the whole earth : |
Whether to punish earth's peoples or as a work of faithful love, he despatches them. | 13 Whether in one tribe, or in his own land, or in what place soever of his mercy he shall command them to be found. |
Listen to this, Job, without flinching and reflect on the marvel ous works of God. | 14 Hearken to these things, Job : Stand, and consider the wondrous works of God. |
Do you know how God controls them or how his clouds make the lightning flash? | 15 Dost thou know when God commanded the rains, to shew his light of his clouds? |
Do you know how he balances the clouds -- a miracle of consummate skil ? | 16 Knowest thou the great paths of the clouds, and the perfect knowledges? |
When your clothes are hot to your body and the earth lies stil under the south wind, | 17 Are not thy garments hot, when the south wind blows upon the earth? |
can you, like him, stretch out the sky, tempered like a mirror of cast metal? | 18 Thou perhaps hast made the heavens with him, which are most strong, as if they were of molten brass. |
Teach me what we should say to him: but better discuss no further, since we are in the dark. | 19 Shew us what we may say to him : for we are wrapped up in darkness. |
Does he take note when I speak? When human beings give orders, does he take it in? | 20 Who shall tell him the things I speak? even if a man shall speak, he shall be swallowed up. |
There are times when the light vanishes, behind darkening clouds; then comes the wind, sweepingthem away. | 21 But now they see not the light : the air on a sudden shall be thickened into clouds, and the wind shall pass and drive them away. |
and brightness spreads from the north. God is clothed in fearful splendour: | 22 Cold cometh out of the north, and to God praise with fear. |
he, Shaddai, is far beyond our reach. Supreme in power, in equity, excel ing in saving justice, yet nooppressor- | 23 We cannot find him worthily : he is great in strength, and in judgment, and in justice, and he is ineffable. |
no wonder then that people fear him: everyone thoughtful holds him in awe! | 24 Therefore men shall fear him, and all that seem to themselves to be wise, shall not dare to behold him. |
