1 Elihu went on speaking. He said:	1 - Proseguendo poi Eliu, disse:
2 Be patient a little longer while I explain, for I have more to say on God's behalf.	2 «Aspettami un poco e ti ammaestrerò, giacchè ho ancora altre cose da dire in favor di Dio.
3 I shal range far afield for my arguments to prove my Maker just.	3 Riprenderò le mie cognizioni da principio, e proverò che il mio creatore è giusto:
4 I guarantee, nothing I shal say wil be untrue: you have a man of sound learning here.	4 poichè certamente senza menzogna sono i miei detti, e una scienza perfetta ti piacerà.
5 God does not reject anyone whose heart is pure	5 Dio non rigetta i potenti, essendo egli pure potente;
6 or let the sinner live on in al his power. He does accord fair judgement to the afflicted;	6 ma gli empii egli non salva, e ai poverelli accorda il diritto:
7 he does uphold what the upright deserve. When he raises kings to thrones, if they grow proud of theirunending rule,	7 non distoglie dal giusto gli occhi suoiegli che pone i re sul trono in perpetuo, sì che vengano esaltati.
8 then he fetters them with chains, they are caught in the bonds of affliction.	8 Ma se sono avvinti in catene, e astretti dai legami della miseria,
9 He shows them the import of their deeds, of the sins of pride they have committed.	9 allora egli mostra ad essi il loro agire, e i loro delitti, quanto furon crudeli:
10 In their ears he sounds a warning, ordering them to turn back from doing wrong.	10 apre ancora il loro orecchio all'ammonizione, ed esorta che si convertano dal male.
11 If they take notice and obey him, the rest of their days are prosperous and the years pass pleasantly.	11 Se ascoltano e si sottomettono, finiscono i loro giorni nella felicitàe gli anni loro nella gloria;
12 If not, they go down the Canal and perish in their stupidity.	12 se invece non ascoltano, saranno passati a fil di spada, e periranno nella stoltezza.
13 The stubborn, who cherish their anger and do not cry for help when he chains them,	13 Gl'ipocriti e gli astuti provocano l'ira di Dio, e non innalzano grida quando egli l'incatena;
14 die in the bloom of youth or live among the male prostitutes of the temple.	14 morirà precocemente l'anima loro, e la loro vita finirà fra gl'impuri.
15 But God saves the afflicted by his affliction, warning him in his misery.	15 Egli salva il povero dalla sua angustia, e ammonisce il suo orecchio per mezzo della tribolazione.
16 You, too, he would like to snatch from torment. While you were enjoying boundless abundance, withrich food piled high on your table,	16 Perciò egli ti salverà dalle fauci della distretta; l'ampiezza e non la strettezza sarà il tuo luogo, e riposerai alla tua mensa ricolma di grasse vivande.
17 you did not bring the wicked to trial and did not give fair judgement to the orphan.	17 La causa tua è stata giudicata come di empio, e riceverai [su te] la causa e la sentenza.
18 Beware of being led astray by abundance, of being corrupted by expensive presents.	18 Non ti vinca dunque l'ira, sì che tu opprima qualcuno, nè i molti donativi ti faccian declinare.
19 Take the powerful to law, not merely the penniless, those whose arm is strong, not merely the weak.	19 Sorge forse il tuo grido senza l'angustia, e senza tutti gli strapazzi della violenza?
20 Do not crush people you do not know to instal your relations in their place.	20 Non potrarre la notte....affinchè ascendano i popoli per essi.
21 Avoid any tendency to wrong-doing, for this is why affliction is testing you now.	21 Bada dal piegare verso l'iniquità, poichè questa tu cominciasti a seguire dopo l'afflizione.
22 See, God is sublime in his strength and who can teach lessons as he does?	22 Ecco Dio è eccelso nella sua fortezza, e nessuno è a lui somigliante fra i legislatori.
23 Who has even told him which course to take, or dared to say to him, 'You have done wrong'?	23 Chi potrà scrutare le sue vie? o chi potrà dirgli: - Hai operato cosa iniqua? -
24 Consider, rather, how you may praise his work, a theme that many have sung.	24 Ricordati di magnificare l'operato di lui, che gli uomini celebrano in canto.
25 This is something that everyone can see, gazing, as we do, from afar.	25 Tutti gli uomini lo vedono, ciascuno lo scorge da lontano.
26 Yes, the greatness of God exceeds our knowledge, the number of his years is past counting.	26 Ecco, Dio è grande, vince la nostra scienza, il numero degli anni suoi non si computa.
27 It is he who makes the raindrops smal and pulverises the rain into mist.	27 Egli distacca le gocce della pioggia, ed effonde le piogge a guisa di torrenti:
28 And the clouds then pour this out, sending it streaming down on the human race.	28 le quali profluiscono dalle nubi, che ricoprono ogni cosa al disopra.
29 And who can fathom how he spreads the clouds, or why such crashes thunder from his tent?	29 Se egli vuole estendere le nubi, quale suo padiglione,
30 He spreads a mist before him and covers the tops of the mountains.	30 e far brillare la sua luce al disopra, pur le radici del mare egli ricopre.
31 By these means, he sustains the peoples, giving them plenty to eat.	31 Per mezzo di tali cose egli giudica i popoli, e appresta cibo a numerose genti.
32 He gathers up the lightning in his hands, assigning it the mark where to strike.	32 Nelle sue mani egli asconde la luce, e le comanda di tornar di nuovo;
33 His crashing gives warning of its coming, anger flashes out against iniquity.	33 di lui dà annunzio il suo tuono, [di lui] che effonde l'ira sua sull'iniquità.
