1 Elihu went on speaking. He said:	1 Indi Eliu seguitò a dire:
2 Be patient a little longer while I explain, for I have more to say on God's behalf.	2 Soffrimi ancor un poco, ed io mi spiegherò con te: perocché ho tutt'ora da dire per la causa di Dio.
3 I shal range far afield for my arguments to prove my Maker just.	3 Ripiglierò da' suoi principj la mia sentenza, e proverò, che giusto è il mio Creatore.
4 I guarantee, nothing I shal say wil be untrue: you have a man of sound learning here.	4 Perocché veraci, e senza menzogna sono i miei detti, e una dottrina, che è perfetta, a te piacerà.
5 God does not reject anyone whose heart is pure	5 Dio non rigetta i potenti, essendo pur egli il Potente.
6 or let the sinner live on in al his power. He does accord fair judgement to the afflicted;	6 Ma non salva gli empj, e a' poveri rende ragione.
7 he does uphold what the upright deserve. When he raises kings to thrones, if they grow proud of theirunending rule,	7 Non torcerà i suoi sguardi dal giusto: egli è che colloca sopra trono stabile i regi, ed eglino sono esaltati.
8 then he fetters them with chains, they are caught in the bonds of affliction.	8 E se poi saran messi in catena, o annodati da' lacci di povertà,
9 He shows them the import of their deeds, of the sins of pride they have committed.	9 Egli ad essi accennerà le opere loro, e le loro scelleratezze, perocché ei furon crudeli.
10 In their ears he sounds a warning, ordering them to turn back from doing wrong.	10 Aprirà loro le orecchie adiri di correggerli, e gli ammonirà, perché si ritraggano dall'iniquità.
11 If they take notice and obey him, the rest of their days are prosperous and the years pass pleasantly.	11 Se ascolteranno, e saranno docili, finiranno i giorni loro felicemente, e gli anni in gloria:
12 If not, they go down the Canal and perish in their stupidity.	12 Ma se non ascolteranno, urteran nella spada, e periranno nella stoltezza.
13 The stubborn, who cherish their anger and do not cry for help when he chains them,	13 Gli ipocriti, e i furbi provocan l'ira di Dio, e ridotti in catene non alzan la voce a lui.
14 die in the bloom of youth or live among the male prostitutes of the temple.	14 Moriranno di morte violenta, e la loro vita finirà tragli uomini impuri.
15 But God saves the afflicted by his affliction, warning him in his misery.	15 Egli trarrà fuori d'angustia il povero, e nella tribolazione lo istruirà.
16 You, too, he would like to snatch from torment. While you were enjoying boundless abundance, withrich food piled high on your table,	16 Ei ti salverà dalla fossa larga mente angusta, e che non ha fondo sotto di se: ti riposerai alla tua mensa carica di grasse vivande.
17 you did not bring the wicked to trial and did not give fair judgement to the orphan.	17 La tua causa è stata giudicata come di empio: riceverai secondo i meriti di tua causa.
18 Beware of being led astray by abundance, of being corrupted by expensive presents.	18 Non ti soverchi adunque lo sdegno per farti opprimere alcuno, né ti seducano i molti doni.
19 Take the powerful to law, not merely the penniless, those whose arm is strong, not merely the weak.	19 Umilia senza la sferza la tua grandezza, e tutti quelli, che si fanno forti in lor possanza.
20 Do not crush people you do not know to instal your relations in their place.	20 Non allungare la notte (in pensando), come ne' loro paesi alcuni popoli vanno di bene in meglio.
21 Avoid any tendency to wrong-doing, for this is why affliction is testing you now.	21 Guardati dal torcere il passo verso l'iniquità; perocché questa cominciasti a seguire dopo la tua afflizione.
22 See, God is sublime in his strength and who can teach lessons as he does?	22 Rifletti come Dio è eccelso in sua possanza, e nissun de' legislatori è simile a lui.
23 Who has even told him which course to take, or dared to say to him, 'You have done wrong'?	23 Chi potrà indagar le sue vie? E chi potrà dire a lui, Tu hai fatto ingiustizia?
24 Consider, rather, how you may praise his work, a theme that many have sung.	24 Ricordati che tu l'opera di lui non comprendi, che fu celebrata dagli uomini.
25 This is something that everyone can see, gazing, as we do, from afar.	25 Gli uomini tutti lo veggono, ciascuno lo mira da lungi.
26 Yes, the greatness of God exceeds our knowledge, the number of his years is past counting.	26 Certamente Iddio è grande, e sorpassa ogni nostro sapere: e il numero degli anni di lui non può rinvenirsi.
27 It is he who makes the raindrops smal and pulverises the rain into mist.	27 Egli attrae le stille dell'acqua, e versa le piogge come torrenti,
28 And the clouds then pour this out, sending it streaming down on the human race.	28 Che si sciolgono dalle nuvole, onde tutto lassù è coperto.
29 And who can fathom how he spreads the clouds, or why such crashes thunder from his tent?	29 Quando egli vuole distende le nuvole, come suo padiglione,
30 He spreads a mist before him and covers the tops of the mountains.	30 E folgori manda, e i suoi lampi di colassù, e cuopre gli estremi lidi del mare.
31 By these means, he sustains the peoples, giving them plenty to eat.	31 Per mezzo di tali cose egli esercita i suoi giudizj sopra le genti, e al gran numero degli uomini da nutrimento.
32 He gathers up the lightning in his hands, assigning it the mark where to strike.	32 Nelle sue mani nasconde la luce, e le comanda di tornare di nuovo.
33 His crashing gives warning of its coming, anger flashes out against iniquity.	33 Egli fa intendere a chi lo ama, ch'ell' è suo dominio, e che a quella ei può pervenire.
