NEW JERUSALEMLXX
Elihu went on speaking. He said:1 προσθεις δε ελιους ετι λεγει
Be patient a little longer while I explain, for I have more to say on God's behalf.2 μεινον με μικρον ετι ινα διδαξω σε ετι γαρ εν εμοι εστιν λεξις
I shal range far afield for my arguments to prove my Maker just.3 αναλαβων την επιστημην μου μακραν εργοις δε μου δικαια ερω
I guarantee, nothing I shal say wil be untrue: you have a man of sound learning here.4 επ' αληθειας και ουκ αδικα ρηματα αδικως συνιεις
God does not reject anyone whose heart is pure5 γιγνωσκε δε οτι ο κυριος ου μη αποποιησηται τον ακακον δυνατος ισχυι καρδιας
or let the sinner live on in al his power. He does accord fair judgement to the afflicted;6 ασεβη ου μη ζωοποιησει και κριμα πτωχων δωσει
he does uphold what the upright deserve. When he raises kings to thrones, if they grow proud of theirunending rule,7 ουκ αφελει απο δικαιου οφθαλμους αυτου και μετα βασιλεων εις θρονον και καθιει αυτους εις νεικος και υψωθησονται
then he fetters them with chains, they are caught in the bonds of affliction.8 και ει πεπεδημενοι εν χειροπεδαις συσχεθησονται εν σχοινιοις πενιας
He shows them the import of their deeds, of the sins of pride they have committed.9 και αναγγελει αυτοις τα εργα αυτων και τα παραπτωματα αυτων οτι ισχυσουσιν
In their ears he sounds a warning, ordering them to turn back from doing wrong.10 αλλα του δικαιου εισακουσεται και ειπεν οτι επιστραφησονται εξ αδικιας
If they take notice and obey him, the rest of their days are prosperous and the years pass pleasantly.11 εαν ακουσωσιν και δουλευσωσιν συντελεσουσιν τας ημερας αυτων εν αγαθοις και τα ετη αυτων εν ευπρεπειαις
If not, they go down the Canal and perish in their stupidity.12 ασεβεις δε ου διασωζει παρα το μη βουλεσθαι ειδεναι αυτους τον κυριον και διοτι νουθετουμενοι ανηκοοι ησαν
The stubborn, who cherish their anger and do not cry for help when he chains them,13 και υποκριται καρδια ταξουσιν θυμον ου βοησονται οτι εδησεν αυτους
die in the bloom of youth or live among the male prostitutes of the temple.14 αποθανοι τοινυν εν νεοτητι η ψυχη αυτων η δε ζωη αυτων τιτρωσκομενη υπο αγγελων
But God saves the afflicted by his affliction, warning him in his misery.15 ανθ' ων εθλιψαν ασθενη και αδυνατον κριμα δε πραεων εκθησει
You, too, he would like to snatch from torment. While you were enjoying boundless abundance, withrich food piled high on your table,16 και προσετι ηπατησεν σε εκ στοματος εχθρου αβυσσος καταχυσις υποκατω αυτης και κατεβη τραπεζα σου πληρης πιοτητος
you did not bring the wicked to trial and did not give fair judgement to the orphan.17 ουχ υστερησει δε απο δικαιων κριμα
Beware of being led astray by abundance, of being corrupted by expensive presents.18 θυμος δε επ' ασεβεις εσται δι' ασεβειαν δωρων ων εδεχοντο επ' αδικιαις
Take the powerful to law, not merely the penniless, those whose arm is strong, not merely the weak.19 μη σε εκκλινατω εκων ο νους δεησεως εν αναγκη οντων αδυνατων και παντας τους κραταιουντας ισχυν
Do not crush people you do not know to instal your relations in their place.20 μη εξελκυσης την νυκτα του αναβηναι λαους αντ' αυτων
Avoid any tendency to wrong-doing, for this is why affliction is testing you now.21 αλλα φυλαξαι μη πραξης ατοπα επι τουτον γαρ εξειλω απο πτωχειας
See, God is sublime in his strength and who can teach lessons as he does?22 ιδου ο ισχυρος κραταιωσει εν ισχυι αυτου τις γαρ εστιν κατ' αυτον δυναστης
Who has even told him which course to take, or dared to say to him, 'You have done wrong'?23 τις δε εστιν ο εταζων αυτου τα εργα η τις ο ειπας επραξεν αδικα
Consider, rather, how you may praise his work, a theme that many have sung.24 μνησθητι οτι μεγαλα εστιν αυτου τα εργα ων ηρξαν ανδρες
This is something that everyone can see, gazing, as we do, from afar.25 πας ανθρωπος ειδεν εν εαυτω οσοι τιτρωσκομενοι εισιν βροτοι
Yes, the greatness of God exceeds our knowledge, the number of his years is past counting.26 ιδου ο ισχυρος πολυς και ου γνωσομεθα αριθμος ετων αυτου και απεραντος
It is he who makes the raindrops smal and pulverises the rain into mist.27 αριθμηται δε αυτω σταγονες υετου και επιχυθησονται υετω εις νεφελην
And the clouds then pour this out, sending it streaming down on the human race.28 ρυησονται παλαιωματα εσκιασεν δε νεφη επι αμυθητων βροτων [8α] ωραν εθετο κτηνεσιν οιδασιν δε κοιτης ταξιν [8β] επι τουτοις πασιν ουκ εξισταται σου η διανοια ουδε διαλλασσεται σου η καρδια απο σωματος
And who can fathom how he spreads the clouds, or why such crashes thunder from his tent?29 και εαν συνη απεκτασεις νεφελης ισοτητα σκηνης αυτου
He spreads a mist before him and covers the tops of the mountains.30 ιδου εκτεινει επ' αυτον ηδω και ριζωματα της θαλασσης εκαλυψεν
By these means, he sustains the peoples, giving them plenty to eat.31 εν γαρ αυτοις κρινει λαους δωσει τροφην τω ισχυοντι
He gathers up the lightning in his hands, assigning it the mark where to strike.32 επι χειρων εκαλυψεν φως και ενετειλατο περι αυτης εν απαντωντι
His crashing gives warning of its coming, anger flashes out against iniquity.33 αναγγελει περι αυτου φιλον αυτου κτησις και περι αδικιας
