Job 34

1 Elihu continued his speech. He said:	1 Poi Eliu, continuando a parlare, disse anche questo:
2 And now, you sages, listen to what I say, lend me your ears, you learned men.	2 « O sapienti, ascoltate le mie parole, o prudenti, statemi a sentire:
3 The ear distinguishes the value of what is said, just as the palate can tel one food from another.	3 giacchè l'orecchio giudica le parole come il palato discerne i cibi.
4 Let us consider together God's ruling and decide what we all mean by good.	4 Formiamoci un giudizio, e vediamo tra noi quale sia il meglio.
5 Job has been saying, 'I am upright and God denies me fair judgement.	5 Giobbe ha detto: Io son giusto: e Dio non mi rende giustizia;
6 My judge is treating me cruel y, my wound is incurable, for no fault of mine.'	6 nel giudizio fatto contro di me ci sono degli sbagli; la mia piaga è atroce senza che io abbia peccato:
7 Can anyone else exist like Job, who laps up mockery like water,	7 chi è mai come Giobbe che beve l'insulto come l'acqua,
8 who consorts with evil-doers and marches in step with the wicked?	8 e cammina con quei che commettono l'iniquità, e s'imbranca cogli scelerati?
9 Did he not say, 'No one derives any benefit from enjoying the society of God'?	9 Infatti ha detto: L'uomo non piacerà a Dio, quand'anche corresse assieme con lui.
10 Listen to me then, like intel igent people. Far be evil from God or injustice from Shaddai!	10 Or dunque ascoltatemi, o uomini assennati. Lungi da Dio l'empietà, e dall'onnipotente l'ingiustizia.
11 For he pays people back for what they do, treating each as his own conduct deserves.	11 Egli infatti renderà all'uomo secondo le sue opere, e retribuirà a ciascuno secondo la sua condotta.
12 Be sure of it: God never does wrong, Shaddai does not pervert what is just.	12 Di certo Dio non condanna senza ragione, e l'Onnipotente non perverte la giustizia.
13 Did someone else entrust the world to his care was he given charge of the universe by someoneelse?	13 Qual altro ha Egli costituito sopra la terra? A chi ha dato il governo dell'universo da lui creato?
14 If he were to recal his spirit, to concentrate his breath back in himself,	14 Se restringesse in sè il suo pensiero, se ritirasse a sè lo spirito e il fiato,
15 all flesh would instantly perish and al people would return to dust.	15 sogni carne verrebbe meno, e l'uomo ritornerebbe in cenere.
16 If you have any intel igence, listen to this, lend your ear to the sound of my words.	16 Se tu sei intelligente, ascolta quanto si dice, e sta' attento al suono delle mie parole.
17 Could an enemy of fair judgement ever govern? Would you dare condemn the Upright One, theAlmighty,	17 Può forse essere sanato colui che non ama la giustizia? E come fai a condannare a questa maniera colui che è il Giusto?
18 who says to a king, 'You are a scoundrel!' and to nobles, 'You are wicked!',	18 Colui che dice al re: Apostata, e chiama i grandi scelerati;
19 who is unimpressed by princes and makes no distinction between rich and poor, since al alike havebeen made by him?	19 colui che non guarda in faccia ai potenti, e non fa conto del tiranno quando è in litigio col povero, perché tutti sono opera delle sue mani.
20 They die suddenly, at dead of night, they perish -- these great ones -- and disappear: it costs him noeffort to remove a tyrant.	20 Essi moriranno all'improvviso, nel mezzo della notte, ne saran turbati i popoli, ed essi passeranno, e il violento sarà portato via senza la mano (dell'uomo).
21 For his eyes keep watch on human ways, and he observes every step.	21 Infatti Dio tien d'occhio la condotta dei mortali e considera tutti i loro passi.
22 No darkness, no shadow dark as death where wrong-doers can hide!	22 Non vi son tenebre, nè ombra di morte ove possano nascondersi quelli che operano l'iniquità.
23 He serves no writ on anyone, no summons to appear before God's court:	23 Non è più in potere dell'uomo di comparire al giudizio di Dio.
24 he breaks the powerful without enquiry and sets up others in their places.	24 Egli ne stritolerà una moltitudine innumerevole, e ne stabilirà altri al loro posto.
25 He knows the sort of things they do! He overthrows them at night, to be trampled on.	25 Conoscendo le loro opere, li travolge nella notte e li fa stritolare;
26 He beats them like criminals chained up for al to see,	26 li colpisce come empi in presenza di tutti.
27 since they have turned their backs on him, having understood so little of his ways	27 Essi come per partito preso si allontanarono da lui e non vollero comprendere nessuna delle sue vie,
28 as to make the cries of the weak rise to him and let him hear the appeal of the afflicted.	28 in modo da far giungere a lui il gemito del povero, da fargli sentire i lamenti degl'infelici.
29 But if he is stil silent and no one can move him, if he veils his face, so that no one can see him, he istaking pity on nations and individuals,	29 Se Egli dà pace, chi potrà condannare? Se Egli nasconde il suo volto, chi potrà contemplarlo, sia delle nazioni che di tutti gli uomini?
30 is setting some wrong-doer free from the meshes of affliction.	30 E gli fa regnare l'ipocrita a motivo dei peccati del popolo.
31 When such a one says to God, 'I was misled, I shal not do wrong any more;	31 Giacchè io ho parlato davanti a Dio, non t'impedirò di parlare.
32 although I have sinned, instruct me; although I did wrong, I will not do it again,'	32 Se ho sbagliato, mostramelo, e se ho parlato male non dirò altro.
33 in your opinion, should he punish such a one -- you who have rejected his decisions? This is for youto decide -- not for me!- so kindly enlighten us!	33 Forse che Dio non ti domanderà conto dell'iniquità, perchè ti è dispiaciuto? Tu e non io hai cominciato a parlare, or se hai qualche cosa di meglio, parla.
34 Ordinary sensible people, however, wil say to me, and so wil any sage who has been listening tome,	34 Parlino con me gli uomini intelligenti, e l'uomo saggio mi ascolti.
35 'Job's words are spoken without any knowledge, what he says shows no intel igence.	35 Ma Giobbe ha parlato stoltamente, e le sue parole non suonan buona dottrina.
36 Kindly examine him thoroughly, since his answers imply that he is a criminal.	36 Padremio, sia provato Giobbe sino alla fine, non risparmiare l'uomo iniquo;
37 For to his sin he now adds rebellion, bringing law to an end among us and heaping abuse on God.'	37 perchè egli aggiunge ai suoi peccati la bestemmia. Frattanto sia fra noi messo alle strette, e poi coi suoi discorsi chiami in giudizio Dio ».
