NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
1 Why does Shaddai not make known the times he has fixed; why do his faithful never see his Days?1 Ab Omnipotente non sunt abscondita tempora :
qui autem noverunt eum,
ignorant dies illius.
2 The wicked move boundary-marks away, they carry off flock and shepherd.2 Alii terminos transtulerunt ;
diripuerunt greges, et paverunt eos.
3 They drive away the orphan's donkey, as security, they seize the widow's ox.3 Asinum pupillorum abegerunt,
et abstulerunt pro pignore bovem viduæ.
4 The needy have to keep out of the way, poor country people have to keep out of sight.4 Subverterunt pauperum viam,
et oppresserunt pariter mansuetos terræ.
5 Like wild desert donkeys, they go out to work, searching from dawn for food, and at evening forsomething on which to feed their children.5 Alii quasi onagri in deserto egrediuntur ad opus suum :
vigilantes ad prædam, præparant panem liberis.
6 They go harvesting in the field of some scoundrel, they go pilfering in the vineyards of the wicked.6 Agrum non suum demetunt,
et vineam ejus, quem vi oppresserint, vindemiant.
7 They spend the night naked, lacking clothes, with no covering against the cold.7 Nudos dimittunt homines, indumenta tollentes,
quibus non est operimentum in frigore :
8 Mountain rainstorms cut them through, unsheltered, they hug the rocks.8 quos imbres montium rigant,
et non habentes velamen, amplexantur lapides.
9 The orphan child is torn from the breast, the child of the poor is exacted as security.9 Vim fecerunt deprædantes pupillos,
et vulgum pauperem spoliaverunt.
10 They go about naked, lacking clothes, and starving while they carry the sheaves.10 Nudis et incedentibus absque vestitu,
et esurientibus tulerunt spicas.
11 Two little wal s, their shelter at high noon; parched with thirst, they have to tread the winepress.11 Inter acervos eorum meridiati sunt,
qui calcatis torcularibus sitiunt.
12 From the towns come the groans of the dying and the gasp of the wounded crying for help. Yet Godremains deaf to prayer!12 De civitatibus fecerunt viros gemere,
et anima vulneratorum clamavit :
et Deus inultum abire non patitur.
13 In contrast, there are those who reject the light: who know nothing of its ways and who do notfrequent its paths.13 Ipsi fuerunt rebelles lumini :
nescierunt vias ejus,
nec reversi sunt per semitas ejus.
14 When all is dark the murderer leaves his bed to kil the poor and needy. During the night the thiefgoes on the prowl,14 Mane primo consurgit homicida ;
interficit egenum et pauperem :
per noctem vero erit quasi fur.
15 The eye of the adulterer watches for twilight, 'No one wil see me,' he mutters as he masks his face.Inthe daytime they keep out of sight, these people who do not want to know the light.15 Oculus adulteri observat caliginem,
dicens : Non me videbit oculus :
et operiet vultum suum.
16 breaking into houses while the darkness lasts.16 Perfodit in tenebris domos,
sicut in die condixerant sibi,
et ignoraverunt lucem.
17 For al of them, morning is a time of shadow dark as death, since that is when they know what fear is.17 Si subito apparuerit aurora, arbitrantur umbram mortis :
et sic in tenebris quasi in luce ambulant.
18 18 Levis est super faciem aquæ :
maledicta sit pars ejus in terra,
nec ambulet per viam vinearum.
19 19 Ad nimium calorem transeat ab aquis nivium,
et usque ad inferos peccatum illius.
20 20 Obliviscatur ejus misericordia ; dulcedo illius vermes :
non sit in recordatione,
sed conteratur quasi lignum infructuosum.
21 21 Pavit enim sterilem quæ non parit,
et viduæ bene non fecit.
22 22 Detraxit fortes in fortitudine sua,
et cum steterit, non credet vitæ suæ.
23 23 Dedit ei Deus locum pœnitentiæ,
et ille abutitur eo in superbiam :
oculi autem ejus sunt in viis illius.
24 24 Elevati sunt ad modicum, et non subsistent :
et humiliabuntur sicut omnia, et auferentur,
et sicut summitates spicarum conterentur.
25 Is this not so? Who can prove me a liar or show that my words have no substance?25 Quod si non est ita, quis me potest arguere esse mentitum,
et ponere ante Deum verba mea ?
