NEW JERUSALEMDOUAI-RHEIMS
'From among the Israelites, summon your brother Aaron and his sons to be priests in my service:Aaron and Aaron's sons Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.1 Take unto thee also Aaron thy brother with his sons, from among the children of Israel, that they may minister to me in the priest's office: Aaron, Nadab, and Abiu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.
For your brother Aaron you wil make sacred vestments to give dignity and magnificence.2 And thou shalt make a holy vesture for Aaron thy brother for glory and for beauty.
You will instruct al the skilled men, whom I have endowed with skil , to make Aaron's vestments for hisconsecration to my priesthood.3 And thou shalt speak to all the wise of heart, whom I have filled with the spirit of wisdom, that they may make Aaron's vestments, in which he being consecrated may minister to me.
These are the vestments which they must make: a pectoral, an ephod, a robe, an embroidered tunic, aturban and a belt. They must make sacred vestments for your brother Aaron and his sons, for them to be priestsin my service.4 And these shall be the vestments that they shall make: A rational and an ephod, a tunick and a strait linen garment, a mitre and a girdle. They shall make the holy vestments for thy brother Aaron and his sons, that they may do the office of priesthood unto me.
They wil use gold and violet material, red-purple and crimson, and finely woven linen.5 And they shall take gold, and violet, and purple, and scarlet twice dyed, and fine linen.
'They wil make the ephod of finely woven linen embroidered with gold, violet-purple, red-purple andcrimson.6 And they shall make the ephod of gold, and violet, and purple, and scarlet twice dyed, and fine twisted linen, embroidered with divers colours.
It wil have two shoulder-straps joined to it; it will be joined to them by its two edges.7 It shall have the two edges joined in the top on both sides, that they may be closed together.
The waistband on the ephod to hold it in position must be of the same workmanship and be of a piecewith it: of gold, violet-purple, red-purple and crimson materials and finely woven linen.8 The very workmanship also and all the variety of the work shall be of gold, and violet, and purple, and scarlet twice dyed, and fine twisted linen.
You will then take two cornelians and engrave them with the names of the sons of Israel,9 And thou shalt take two onyx stones, and shalt grave on them the names of the children of Israel:
six of their names on one stone, the remaining six names on the other, in the order of their birth.10 Six names on one stone, and the other six on the other, according to the order of their birth.
By the stone-carver's art -- seal engraving -- you wil engrave the two stones with the names of thesons of Israel. You will have them mounted in gold settings11 With the work of an engraver and the graving of a jeweller, thou shalt engrave them with the names of the children of Israel, set in gold and compassed about:
and wil put the two stones on the shoulder-straps of the ephod, to commemorate the sons of Israel. In this way Aaron will bear their names on his two shoulders, before Yahweh, as a reminder.12 And thou shalt put them in both sides of the ephod, a memorial for the children of Israel. And Aaron shall bear their names before the Lord upon both shoulders, for a remembrance.
You wil also make golden rosettes,13 Thou shalt make also hooks of gold.
and two chains of pure gold twisted like cord, and wil attach the cord-like chains to the rosettes.14 And two little chains of the purest gold linked one to another, which thou shalt put into the hooks.
'You wil make the breastplate of judgement of the same embroidered work as the ephod; you wilmake it of gold, violet-purple, red-purple and crimson materials and finely woven linen.15 And thou shalt make the rational of judgment with embroidered work of divers colours, according to the workmanship of the ephod, of gold, violet, and purple, and scarlet twice dyed, and fine twisted linen.
It must be square and doubled over, a span in length and a span in width.16 It shall be foursquare and doubled: it shall be the measure of a span both in length and in breadth.
In it you wil set four rows of stones: a sard, topaz and emerald for the first row;17 And thou shalt set in it four rows of stones: in the first row shall be a sardius stone, and a topaz, and an emerald:
for the second row, a garnet, sapphire and diamond;18 In the second a carbuncle, a sapphire and a jasper.
for the third row, a hyacinth, a ruby and an amethyst;19 In the third a ligurius, an agate, and an amethyst:
and for the fourth row, a beryl, a cornelian and a jasper. These must be mounted in gold settings.20 In the fourth a chrysolite, an onyx, and a beryl. They shall be set in gold by their rows.
The stones wil correspond to the names of the sons of Israel, twelve like their names, engraved likeseals, each with the name of one of the twelve tribes.21 And they shall have the names of the children of Israel: with twelve names shall they be engraved, each stone with the name of one according to the twelve tribes.
For the breastplate you wil make chains of pure gold twisted like cords,22 And thou shalt make on the rational chains linked one to another of the purest gold:
and on the breastplate you wil make two gold rings, putting the two rings on the two outside edges ofthe breastplate23 And two rings of gold, which thou shalt put in the two ends at the top of the rational.
and fastening the two gold cords to the two rings on the outside edges of the breastplate.24 And the golden chains thou shalt join to the rings, that are in the ends thereof:
The other two ends of the cords you wil fasten to the two rosettes, putting these on the shoulder-straps of the ephod, on the front.25 And the ends of the chains themselves thou shalt join together with two hooks on both sides of the ephod, which is towards the rational.
You wil also make two gold rings and put them on the two edges of the breastplate, on the innerside, against the ephod;26 Thou shalt make also two rings of gold which thou shalt put in the top parts of the rational, in the borders that are over against the ephod, and look towards the back parts thereof.
and you wil make two gold rings and put them low down on the front of the two shoulder-pieces ofthe ephod, close to the join, above the waistband of the ephod.27 Moreover also other two rings of gold, which are to be set on each side of the ephod beneath, that looketh towards the nether joining, that the rational may be fitted with the ephod,
The breastplate wil be secured by a violet-purple cord passed through its rings and those of theephod, so that the breastplate wil sit above the waistband and not come apart from the ephod.28 And may be fastened by the rings thereof unto the rings of the ephod with a violet fillet, that the joining artificially wrought may continue, and the rational and the ephod may not be loosed one from the other.
Thus Aaron wil bear the names of the sons of Israel on the breastplate of judgement, on his heart, when he enters the sanctuary, as a reminder, before Yahweh, always.29 And Aaron shall bear the names of the children of Israel in the rational of judgement upon his breast, when he shall enter into the sanctuary, a memorial before the Lord for ever.
To the breastplate of judgement you will add the urim and the thummim, and these wil be on Aaron'sheart when he goes into Yahweh's presence, and Aaron will bear the Israelites' judgement on his heart, inYahweh's presence, always.30 And thou shalt put in the rational of judgment doctrine and truth, which shall be on Aaron's breast, when he shall go in before the Lord: and he shall bear the judgment of the children of Israel on his breast, in the sight of the Lord always.
'You wil make the robe of the ephod entirely of violet-purple.31 And thou shalt make the tunick of the ephod all of violet,
In the centre it will have an opening for the head, the opening to have round it a border woven likethe neck of a coat of mail, so that it wil not get torn.32 In the midst whereof above shall be a hole for the head, and a border round about it woven, as is wont to be made in the outmost parts of garments, that it may not easily be broken.
On its lower hem, you wil make pomegranates of violet-purple, red-purple and crimson, and finelywoven linen al round the hem, with golden bel s between them al round:33 And beneath at the feet of the same tunick round about, thou shalt make as it were pomegranates, of violet, and purple, and scarlet twice dyed, with little bells set between:
a golden bell and then a pomegranate, alternately, al round the lower hem of the robe.34 So that there shall be a golden bell and a pomegranate, and again another golden bell and a pomegranate.
Aaron must wear it when he officiates, and the tinkling will be heard when he goes into the sanctuaryinto Yahweh's presence, or leaves it, and so he wil not incur death.35 And Aaron shall be vested with it in the office of his ministry, that the sound may be heard, when he goeth in and cometh out of the sanctuary, in the sight of the Lord, and that he may not die.
'You wil make a flower of pure gold and on it, as you would engrave a seal, you wil engrave,"Consecrated to Yahweh".36 Thou shalt make also a plate of the purest gold: wherein thou shalt grave with engraver's work, Holy to the Lord.
You wil put it on a violet-purple cord; it wil go on the turban; the front of the turban is the place whereit must go.37 And thou shalt tie it with a violet fillet, and it shall be upon the mitre,
This wil go on Aaron's brow, and Aaron will thus take on himself the short-comings in the holy thingsconsecrated by the Israelites, in all their holy offerings. It wil be on his brow permanently, to make themacceptable to Yahweh.38 Hanging over the forehead of the high priest. And Aaron shall bear the iniquities of those things, which the children of Israel have offered and sanctified, in all their gifts and offerings. And the plate shall be always on his forehead, that the Lord may be well pleased with them.
The tunic you wil weave of fine linen, and make a turban of fine linen, and an embroideredwaistband.39 And thou shalt gird the tunick with fine linen, and thou shalt make a fine linen mitre, and a girdle of embroidered work.
'For the sons of Aaron you will make tunics and waistbands. You wil also make them head-dressesto give dignity and magnificence.40 Moreover for the sons of Aaron thou shalt prepare linen tunicks, and girdles and mitres for glory and beauty:
You wil dress your brother Aaron and his sons in these; you wil then anoint them, invest them andconsecrate them to serve me in the priesthood.41 And with all these things thou shalt vest Aaron thy brother, and his sons with him. And thou shalt consecrate the hands of them all, and shalt sanctify them, that they may do the office of priesthood unto me.
You wil also make them linen breeches reaching from waist to thigh, to cover their bare flesh.42 Thou shalt make also linen breeches, to cover the flesh of their nakedness from the reins to the thighs:
Aaron and his sons wil wear these when they go into the Tent of Meeting and when they approachthe altar to serve in the sanctuary, as a precaution against incurring mortal guilt. This is a perpetual decree forAaron and for his descendants after him.'
