NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
'From among the Israelites, summon your brother Aaron and his sons to be priests in my service:Aaron and Aaron's sons Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.1 Applica quoque ad te Aaron fratrem tuum cum filiis suis de medio filiorum Israël, ut sacerdotio fungantur mihi : Aaron, Nadab, et Abiu, Eleazar, et Ithamar.
For your brother Aaron you wil make sacred vestments to give dignity and magnificence.2 Faciesque vestem sanctam Aaron fratri tuo in gloriam et decorem.
You will instruct al the skilled men, whom I have endowed with skil , to make Aaron's vestments for hisconsecration to my priesthood.3 Et loqueris cunctis sapientibus corde quos replevi spiritu prudentiæ, ut faciant vestes Aaron, in quibus sanctificatus ministret mihi.
These are the vestments which they must make: a pectoral, an ephod, a robe, an embroidered tunic, aturban and a belt. They must make sacred vestments for your brother Aaron and his sons, for them to be priestsin my service.4 Hæc autem erunt vestimenta quæ faciet : rationale et superhumerale, tunicam et lineam strictam, cidarim et balteum. Facient vestimenta sancta fratri tuo Aaron et filiis ejus, ut sacerdotio fungantur mihi.
They wil use gold and violet material, red-purple and crimson, and finely woven linen.5 Accipientque aurum, et hyacinthum, et purpuram, coccumque bis tinctum, et byssum.
'They wil make the ephod of finely woven linen embroidered with gold, violet-purple, red-purple andcrimson.6 Facient autem superhumerale de auro et hyacintho et purpura, coccoque bis tincto, et bysso retorta, opere polymito.
It wil have two shoulder-straps joined to it; it will be joined to them by its two edges.7 Duas oras junctas habebit in utroque latere summitatum, ut in unum redeant.
The waistband on the ephod to hold it in position must be of the same workmanship and be of a piecewith it: of gold, violet-purple, red-purple and crimson materials and finely woven linen.8 Ipsa quoque textura et cuncta operis varietas erit ex auro et hyacintho, et purpura, coccoque bis tincto, et bysso retorta.
You will then take two cornelians and engrave them with the names of the sons of Israel,9 Sumesque duos lapides onychinos, et sculpes in eis nomina filiorum Israël :
six of their names on one stone, the remaining six names on the other, in the order of their birth.10 sex nomina in lapide uno, et sex reliqua in altero, juxta ordinem nativitatis eorum.
By the stone-carver's art -- seal engraving -- you wil engrave the two stones with the names of thesons of Israel. You will have them mounted in gold settings11 Opere sculptoris et cælatura gemmarii, sculpes eos nominibus filiorum Israël, inclusos auro atque circumdatos :
and wil put the two stones on the shoulder-straps of the ephod, to commemorate the sons of Israel. In this way Aaron will bear their names on his two shoulders, before Yahweh, as a reminder.12 et pones in utroque latere superhumeralis, memoriale filiis Israël. Portabitque Aaron nomina eorum coram Domino super utrumque humerum, ob recordationem.
You wil also make golden rosettes,13 Facies et uncinos ex auro,
and two chains of pure gold twisted like cord, and wil attach the cord-like chains to the rosettes.14 et duas catenulas ex auro purissimo sibi invicem cohærentes, quas inseres uncinis.
'You wil make the breastplate of judgement of the same embroidered work as the ephod; you wilmake it of gold, violet-purple, red-purple and crimson materials and finely woven linen.15 Rationale quoque judicii facies opere polymito juxta texturam superhumeralis, ex auro, hyacintho, et purpura, coccoque bis tincto, et bysso retorta.
It must be square and doubled over, a span in length and a span in width.16 Quadrangulum erit et duplex : mensuram palmi habebit tam in longitudine quam in latitudine.
In it you wil set four rows of stones: a sard, topaz and emerald for the first row;17 Ponesque in eo quatuor ordines lapidum : in primo versu erit lapis sardius, et topazius, et smaragdus :
for the second row, a garnet, sapphire and diamond;18 in secundo carbunculus, sapphirus, et jaspis :
for the third row, a hyacinth, a ruby and an amethyst;19 in tertio ligurius, achates, et amethystus :
and for the fourth row, a beryl, a cornelian and a jasper. These must be mounted in gold settings.20 in quarto chrysolithus, onychinus, et beryllus. Inclusi auro erunt per ordines suos.
The stones wil correspond to the names of the sons of Israel, twelve like their names, engraved likeseals, each with the name of one of the twelve tribes.21 Habebuntque nomina filiorum Israël : duodecim nominibus cælabuntur, singuli lapides nominibus singulorum per duodecim tribus.
For the breastplate you wil make chains of pure gold twisted like cords,22 Facies in rationali catenas sibi invicem cohærentes ex auro purissimo,
and on the breastplate you wil make two gold rings, putting the two rings on the two outside edges ofthe breastplate23 et duos annulos aureos, quos pones in utraque rationalis summitate :
and fastening the two gold cords to the two rings on the outside edges of the breastplate.24 catenasque aureas junges annulis, qui sunt in marginibus ejus,
The other two ends of the cords you wil fasten to the two rosettes, putting these on the shoulder-straps of the ephod, on the front.25 et ipsarum catenarum extrema duobus copulabis uncinis in utroque latere superhumeralis quod rationale respicit.
You wil also make two gold rings and put them on the two edges of the breastplate, on the innerside, against the ephod;26 Facies et duos annulos aureos, quos pones in summitatibus rationalis, in oris, quæ e regione sunt superhumeralis, et posteriora ejus aspiciunt.
and you wil make two gold rings and put them low down on the front of the two shoulder-pieces ofthe ephod, close to the join, above the waistband of the ephod.27 Necnon et alios duos annulos aureos, qui ponendi sunt in utroque latere superhumeralis deorsum, quod respicit contra faciem juncturæ inferioris, ut aptari possit cum superhumerali,
The breastplate wil be secured by a violet-purple cord passed through its rings and those of theephod, so that the breastplate wil sit above the waistband and not come apart from the ephod.28 et stringatur rationale annulis suis cum annulis superhumeralis vitta hyacinthina, ut maneat junctura fabrefacta, et a se invicem rationale et superhumerale nequeant separari.
Thus Aaron wil bear the names of the sons of Israel on the breastplate of judgement, on his heart, when he enters the sanctuary, as a reminder, before Yahweh, always.29 Portabitque Aaron nomina filiorum Israël in rationali judicii super pectus suum, quando ingredietur Sanctuarium, memoriale coram Domino in æternum.
To the breastplate of judgement you will add the urim and the thummim, and these wil be on Aaron'sheart when he goes into Yahweh's presence, and Aaron will bear the Israelites' judgement on his heart, inYahweh's presence, always.30 Pones autem in rationali judicii Doctrinam et Veritatem, quæ erunt in pectore Aaron, quando ingredietur coram Domino : et gestabit judicium filiorum Israël in pectore suo, in conspectu Domini semper.
'You wil make the robe of the ephod entirely of violet-purple.31 Facies et tunicam superhumeralis totam hyacinthinam,
In the centre it will have an opening for the head, the opening to have round it a border woven likethe neck of a coat of mail, so that it wil not get torn.32 in cujus medio supra erit capitium, et ora per gyrum ejus textilis, sicut fieri solet in extremis vestium partibus, ne facile rumpatur.
On its lower hem, you wil make pomegranates of violet-purple, red-purple and crimson, and finelywoven linen al round the hem, with golden bel s between them al round:33 Deorsum vero, ad pedes ejusdem tunicæ, per circuitum, quasi mala punica facies, ex hyacintho, et purpura, et cocco bis tincto, mistis in medio tintinnabulis,
a golden bell and then a pomegranate, alternately, al round the lower hem of the robe.34 ita ut tintinnabulum sit aureum et malum punicum : rursumque tintinnabulum aliud aureum et malum punicum.
Aaron must wear it when he officiates, and the tinkling will be heard when he goes into the sanctuaryinto Yahweh's presence, or leaves it, and so he wil not incur death.35 Et vestietur ea Aaron in officio ministerii, ut audiatur sonitus quando ingreditur et egreditur sanctuarium in conspectu Domini, et non moriatur.
'You wil make a flower of pure gold and on it, as you would engrave a seal, you wil engrave,"Consecrated to Yahweh".36 Facies et laminam de auro purissimo, in qua sculpes opere cælatoris, Sanctum Domino.
You wil put it on a violet-purple cord; it wil go on the turban; the front of the turban is the place whereit must go.37 Ligabisque eam vitta hyacinthina, et erit super tiaram,
This wil go on Aaron's brow, and Aaron will thus take on himself the short-comings in the holy thingsconsecrated by the Israelites, in all their holy offerings. It wil be on his brow permanently, to make themacceptable to Yahweh.38 imminens fronti pontificis. Portabitque Aaron iniquitates eorum, quæ obtulerunt et sanctificaverunt filii Israël, in cunctis muneribus et donariis suis. Erit autem lamina semper in fronte ejus, ut placatus sit eis Dominus.
The tunic you wil weave of fine linen, and make a turban of fine linen, and an embroideredwaistband.39 Stringesque tunicam bysso, et tiaram byssinam facies, et balteum opere plumarii.
'For the sons of Aaron you will make tunics and waistbands. You wil also make them head-dressesto give dignity and magnificence.40 Porro filiis Aaron tunicas lineas parabis et balteos ac tiaras in gloriam et decorem :
You wil dress your brother Aaron and his sons in these; you wil then anoint them, invest them andconsecrate them to serve me in the priesthood.41 vestiesque his omnibus Aaron fratrem tuum et filios ejus cum eo. Et cunctorum consecrabis manus, sanctificabisque illos, ut sacerdotio fungantur mihi.
You wil also make them linen breeches reaching from waist to thigh, to cover their bare flesh.42 Facies et feminalia linea, ut operiant carnem turpitudinis suæ, a renibus usque ad femora :
Aaron and his sons wil wear these when they go into the Tent of Meeting and when they approachthe altar to serve in the sanctuary, as a precaution against incurring mortal guilt. This is a perpetual decree forAaron and for his descendants after him.'43 et utentur eis Aaron et filii ejus quando ingredientur tabernaculum testimonii, vel quando appropinquant ad altare ut ministrent in sanctuario, ne iniquitatis rei moriantur. Legitimum sempiternum erit Aaron, et semini ejus post eum.
