Genesis 36

NEW JERUSALEM	CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAIN
1 These are the descendants of Esau, that is, Edom.	1 Now these are the generations of Esau, who is Edom.
2 Esau chose his wives from the women of Canaan: Adah daughter of Elon the Hittite, Oholibamahdaughter of Anah, son of Zibeon the Horite,	2 Esau took wives from the daughters of Canaan: Adah the daughter of Elon the Hittite, and Oholibamah the daughter of Anah, the daughter of Zibeon the Hivite,
3 Basemath daughter of Ishmael and sister of Nebaioth.	3 and Basemath, the daughter of Ishmael, sister of Nebaioth.
4 Adah bore Eliphaz to Esau, Basemath bore Reuel,	4 Then Adah bore Eliphaz. Basemath conceived Reuel.
5 Oholibamah bore Jeush, Jalam and Korah. These were the sons of Esau born to him in Canaan.	5 Oholibamah conceived Jeush, and Jalam, and Korah. These are the sons of Esau, who were born to him in the land of Canaan.
6 Esau took his wives, his sons and daughters, al the members of his household, his livestock, al hiscattle and al the goods he had acquired in Canaan and left for Seir, away from his brother Jacob.	6 Then Esau took his wives, and sons, and daughters, and every soul of his house, and his substance, and cattle, and whatever he was able to obtain in the land of Canaan, and he went into another region, withdrawing from his brother Jacob.
7 For they had acquired too much to live together. The land in which they were at that time could notsupport them both because of their livestock.	7 For they were very wealthy and were not able to live together. Neither was the land of their sojourn able to sustain them, because of the multitude of their flocks.
8 That is why Edom settled in the mountainous region of Seir. Esau is Edom.	8 And Esau lived at mount Seir: he is Edom.
9 These are the descendants of Esau, ancestor of Edom, in the mountainous region of Seir.	9 So these are the generations of Esau, the father of Edom, at mount Seir,
10 These are the names of Esau's sons: Eliphaz son of Esau's wife Adah, and Reuel son of Esau's wifeBasemath.	10 and these are the names of his sons: Eliphaz the son of Adah, the wife of Esau, likewise Reuel, the son of Basemath, his wife.
11 The sons of Eliphaz were: Teman, Omar, Zepho, Gatam and Kenaz.	11 And Eliphaz had sons: Teman, Omar, Zepho, and Gatam, and Kenez.
12 Eliphaz son of Esau had Timna for concubine and she bore him Amalek. These were the sons ofEsau's wife Adah.	12 Now Timna was the concubine of Eliphaz, the son of Esau. And she bore him Amalek. These are the sons of Adah, the wife of Esau.
13 These were the sons of Reuel: Nahath, Zerah, Shammah and Mizzah. These were the sons ofEsau's wife Basemath.	13 And the sons of Reuel were Nahath and Zerah, Shammah and Mizzah. These are the sons of Basemath, the wife of Esau.
14 And these were the sons of Esau's wife Oholibamah daughter of Anah, son of Zibeon: she bore himJeush, Jalam and Korah.	14 Likewise, these were the sons of Oholibamah, the daughter of Anah, the daughter of Zibeon, the wife of Esau, whom she bore to him: Jeush, and Jalam, and Korah.
15 These are the chieftains of Esau. The descendants of Eliphaz, Esau's eldest son: the chieftains ofTeman, Omar, Zepho, Kenaz,	15 These were leaders of the sons of Esau, the sons of Eliphaz, the firstborn of Esau: leader Teman, leader Omar, leader Zepho, leader Kenez,
16 Gatam and Amalek. These are the chieftains of Eliphaz in Edom and are descended from Adah.	16 leader Korah, leader Gatam, leader Amalek. These are the sons of Eliphaz, in the land of Edom, and these the sons of Adah.
17 The descendants of Esau's son Reuel: the chieftains of Nahath, Zerah, Shammah and Mizzah.These are the chieftains of Reuel in Edom and are descended from Esau's wife Basemath.	17 Likewise, these are the sons of Reuel, the son of Esau: leader Nahath, leader Zerah, leader Shammah, leader Mizzah. And these were the leaders of Reuel, in the land of Edom. These are the sons of Basemath, the wife of Esau.
18 The descendants of Esau's wife Oholibamah: the chieftains of Jeush, Jalam and Korah. These arethe chieftains of Esau's wife Oholibamah daughter of Anah.	18 Now these are the sons of Oholibamah, the wife of Esau: leader Jeush, leader Jalam, leader Korah. These were the leaders of Oholibamah, the daughter of Anah and the wife of Esau.
19 These were the sons of Esau -- that is, Edom -- and these are their chieftains.	19 These are the sons of Esau, and these were their leaders: this is Edom.
20 These are the sons of Seir the Horite, natives of the country: Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah,	20 These are the sons of Seir, the Horite, the inhabitants of the land: Lotan, and Shobal, and Zibeon, and Anah,
21 Dishon, Ezer and Dishan; these were the Horite chieftains descended from Seir, in Edom.	21 and Dishon, and Ezer, and Dishan. These were the leaders of the Horites, the sons of Seir, in the land of Edom.
22 The sons of Lotan were Hori and Hemam, and Lotan's sister was Timna.	22 Now Lotan produced sons: Hori and Heman. But the sister of Lotan was Timna.
23 These are the sons of Shobal: Alvan, Manahath, Ebal, Shepho and Onam.	23 And these are the sons of Shobal: Alvan, and Manahath, and Ebal, and Shepho, and Onam.
24 These are the sons of Zibeon: Aiah, Anah -- the Anah who found the hot springs in the desert whilepasturing his father Zibeon's donkeys.	24 And these are the sons of Zibeon: Aiah and Anah. This is the Anah who found the hot springs in the wilderness, when he was pasturing the donkeys of his father Zibeon.
25 These are the children of Anah: Dishon, and Oholibamah daughter of Anah.	25 And he had a son Dishon, and a daughter Oholibamah.
26 These are the sons of Dishon: Hemdan, Eshban, Ithran and Cheran.	26 And these are the sons of Dishon: Hemdan, and Esheban, and Ithran, and Cheran.
27 These are the sons of Ezer: Bilhan, Zaavan and Akan.	27 Likewise, these are the sons of Ezer: Bilhan, and Zaavan, and Akan.
28 These are the sons of Dishan: Uz and Aran.	28 Then Dishan had sons: Uz and Aran.
29 These are the Horite chieftains: the chieftains of Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah,	29 These were the leaders of the Horites: leader Lotan, leader Shobal, leader Zibeon, leader Anah,
30 Dishon, Ezer and Dishan. These are the chieftains of the Horites, by their clans, in Seir.	30 leader Dishon, leader Ezer, leader Disan. These were leaders of the Horites who ruled in the land of Seir.
31 These are the kings who reigned in Edom before an Israelite king.	31 Now before the sons of Israel had a king, the kings who ruled in the land of Edom were these:
32 In Edom reigned Bela son of Beor; his city was cal ed Dinhabah.	32 Bela the son of Beor, and the name of his city was Dinhabah.
33 Bela died and Jobab son of Zerah, from Bozrah, succeeded.	33 Then Bela died, and Jobab, the son of Zerah from Bozrah, reigned in his place.
34 Jobab died and Husham from the land of the Temanites succeeded.	34 And when Jobab was dead, Husham of the land of the Temanites reigned in his place.
35 Husham died and Hadad son of Bedad succeeded; he defeated the Midianites in Moab, and his citywas called Avith.	35 Likewise, this one having died, Hadad the son of Bedad reigned in his place. He struck down Midian in the region of Moab. And the name of his city was Avith.
36 Hadad died and Samlah of Masrekah succeeded.	36 And when Adad was dead, Samlah of Masrekah reigned in his place.
37 Samlah died and Shaul of Rehoboth-ha-Nahar succeeded.	37 Likewise, this one being dead, Shaul of the river Rehoboth, reigned in his place.
38 Shaul died and Baal-Hanan son of Achbor succeeded.	38 And when he also had passed away, Baal-hanan, the son of Achbor, succeeded to the kingdom.
39 Baal-Hanan died and Hadad succeeded; his city was called Pau and his wife's name was Mehetabeldaughter of Matred, from Mezahab.	39 Likewise, this one being dead, Hadar reigned in his place; and the name of his city was Pau. And his wife was called Mehetabel, the daughter of Matred, daughter of Mezahab.
40 These are the names of the chieftains of Esau -- according to their clans and localities: the chieftainsof Timna, Alvah, Jetheth,	40 Therefore, these were the names of the leaders of Esau, by their families, and places, and in their vocabulary: leader Timna, leader Alvah, leader Jetheth,
41 Oholibamah, Elah, Pinon,	41 leader Oholibamah, leader Elah, leader Pinon,
42 Kenaz, Teman, Mibzar,	42 leader Kanez, leader Teman, leader Mibzar,
43 Magdiel and Iram. These are the chieftains of Edom, as settled in the territory which they own. Esauwas Edom's ancestor.	43 leader Magdiel, leader Iram. These were the leaders of Edom living in the land of their rule: this is Esau, the father of Idumea.
