1 Thessalonians 5

1 Concerning times and seasons, brothers, you have no need for anything to be written to you.	1 Περὶ δὲ τῶν χρόνων καὶ τῶν καιρῶν, ἀδελφοί, οὐ χρείαν ἔχετε ὑμῖν γράφεσθαι,
2 For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief at night.	2 αὐτοὶ γὰρ ἀκριβῶς οἴδατε ὅτι ἡμέρα κυρίου ὡς κλέπτης ἐν νυκτὶ οὕτως ἔρχεται.
3 When people are saying, "Peace and security," then sudden disaster comes upon them, like labor pains upon a pregnant woman,and they will not escape.	3 ὅταν λέγωσιν· εἰρήνη καὶ ἀσφάλεια, τότε αἰφνίδιος αὐτοῖς ἐφίσταται ὄλεθρος ὥσπερ ἡ ὠδὶν τῇ ἐν γαστρὶ ἐχούσῃ, καὶ οὐ μὴ ἐκφύγωσιν.
4 But you, brothers, are not in darkness, for that day to overtake you like a thief.	4 ὑμεῖς δέ, ἀδελφοί, οὐκ ἐστὲ ἐν σκότει, ἵνα ἡ ἡμέρα ὑμᾶς ὡς κλέπτης καταλάβῃ·
5 For all of you are children of the light and children of the day. We are not of the night or of darkness.	5 πάντες γὰρ ὑμεῖς υἱοὶ φωτός ἐστε καὶ υἱοὶ ἡμέρας. Οὐκ ἐσμὲν νυκτὸς οὐδὲ σκότους·
6 Therefore, let us not sleep as the rest do, but let us stay alert and sober.	6 ἄρα οὖν μὴ καθεύδωμεν ὡς οἱ λοιποὶ ἀλλὰ γρηγορῶμεν καὶ νήφωμεν.
7 Those who sleep go to sleep at night, and those who are drunk get drunk at night.	7 Οἱ γὰρ καθεύδοντες νυκτὸς καθεύδουσιν καὶ οἱ μεθυσκόμενοι νυκτὸς μεθύουσιν·
8 But since we are of the day, let us be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love and the helmet that is hope for salvation.	8 ἡμεῖς δὲ ἡμέρας ὄντες νήφωμεν ἐνδυσάμενοι θώρακα πίστεως καὶ ἀγάπης καὶ περικεφαλαίαν ἐλπίδα σωτηρίας·
9 For God did not destine us for wrath, but to gain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,	9 ὅτι οὐκ ἔθετο ἡμᾶς ὁ θεὸς εἰς ὀργὴν ἀλλ’ εἰς περιποίησιν σωτηρίας διὰ τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ
10 who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep we may live together with him.	10 τοῦ ἀποθανόντος ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν, ἵνα εἴτε γρηγορῶμεν εἴτε καθεύδωμεν ἅμα σὺν αὐτῷ ζήσωμεν.
11 Therefore, encourage one another and build one another up, as indeed you do.	11 Διὸ παρακαλεῖτε ἀλλήλους καὶ οἰκοδομεῖτε εἷς τὸν ἕνα, καθὼς καὶ ποιεῖτε.
12 We ask you, brothers, to respect those who are laboring among you and who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you,	12 Ἐρωτῶμεν δὲ ὑμᾶς, ἀδελφοί, εἰδέναι τοὺς κοπιῶντας ἐν ὑμῖν καὶ προϊσταμένους ὑμῶν ἐν κυρίῳ καὶ νουθετοῦντας ὑμᾶς
13 and to show esteem for them with special love on account of their work. Be at peace among yourselves.	13 καὶ ἡγεῖσθαι αὐτοὺς ὑπερεκπερισσοῦ ἐν ἀγάπῃ διὰ τὸ ἔργον αὐτῶν. εἰρηνεύετε ἐν ἑαυτοῖς.
14 We urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, cheer the fainthearted, support the weak, be patient with all.	14 Παρακαλοῦμεν δὲ ὑμᾶς, ἀδελφοί, νουθετεῖτε τοὺς ἀτάκτους, παραμυθεῖσθε τοὺς ὀλιγοψύχους, ἀντέχεσθε τῶν ἀσθενῶν, μακροθυμεῖτε πρὸς πάντας.
15 See that no one returns evil for evil; rather, always seek what is good (both) for each other and for all.	15 ὁρᾶτε μή τις κακὸν ἀντὶ κακοῦ τινι ἀποδῷ, ἀλλὰ πάντοτε τὸ ἀγαθὸν διώκετε [καὶ] εἰς ἀλλήλους καὶ εἰς πάντας.
16 Rejoice always.	16 Πάντοτε χαίρετε,
17 Pray without ceasing.	17 ἀδιαλείπτως προσεύχεσθε,
18 In all circumstances give thanks, for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.	18 ἐν παντὶ εὐχαριστεῖτε· τοῦτο γὰρ θέλημα θεοῦ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ εἰς ὑμᾶς.
19 Do not quench the Spirit.	19 τὸ πνεῦμα μὴ σβέννυτε,
20 Do not despise prophetic utterances.	20 προφητείας μὴ ἐξουθενεῖτε,
21 Test everything; retain what is good.	21 πάντα δὲ δοκιμάζετε, τὸ καλὸν κατέχετε,
22 Refrain from every kind of evil.	22 ἀπὸ παντὸς εἴδους πονηροῦ ἀπέχεσθε.
23 May the God of peace himself make you perfectly holy and may you entirely, spirit, soul, and body, be preserved blameless for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.	23 Αὐτὸς δὲ ὁ θεὸς τῆς εἰρήνης ἁγιάσαι ὑμᾶς ὁλοτελεῖς, καὶ ὁλόκληρον ὑμῶν τὸ πνεῦμα καὶ ἡ ψυχὴ καὶ τὸ σῶμα ἀμέμπτως ἐν τῇ παρουσίᾳ τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τηρηθείη.
24 The one who calls you is faithful, and he will also accomplish it.	24 πιστὸς ὁ καλῶν ὑμᾶς, ὃς καὶ ποιήσει.
25 Brothers, pray for us (too).	25 Ἀδελφοί, προσεύχεσθε [καὶ] περὶ ἡμῶν.
26 Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss.	26 Ἀσπάσασθε τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς πάντας ἐν φιλήματι ἁγίῳ.
27 I adjure you by the Lord that this letter be read to all the brothers.	27 Ἐνορκίζω ὑμᾶς τὸν κύριον ἀναγνωσθῆναι τὴν ἐπιστολὴν πᾶσιν τοῖς ἀδελφοῖς.
28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.	28 Ἡ χάρις τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ μεθ’ ὑμῶν.
