Concerning times and seasons, brothers, you have no need for anything to be written to you.1 But of the times and moments, brethren, you need not, that we should write to you;
For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief at night.2 For yourselves know perfectly, that the day of the Lord shall so come, as a thief in the night.
When people are saying, "Peace and security," then sudden disaster comes upon them, like labor pains upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.3 For when they shall say, peace and security; then shall sudden destruction come upon them, as the pains upon her that is with child, and they shall not escape.
But you, brothers, are not in darkness, for that day to overtake you like a thief.4 But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.
For all of you are children of the light and children of the day. We are not of the night or of darkness.5 For all you are the children of light, and children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness. 6 Therefore, let us not sleep, as others do; but let us watch, and be sober.
Therefore, let us not sleep as the rest do, but let us stay alert and sober.6 dummy verses inserted by amos
Those who sleep go to sleep at night, and those who are drunk get drunk at night.7 For they that sleep, sleep in the night; and they that are drunk, are drunk in the night.
But since we are of the day, let us be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love and the helmet that is hope for salvation.8 But let us, who are of the day, be sober, having on the breastplate of faith and charity, and for a helmet the hope of salvation.
For God did not destine us for wrath, but to gain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,9 For God hath not appointed us unto wrath, but unto the purchasing of salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,
who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep we may live together with him.10 Who died for us; that, whether we watch or sleep, we may live together with him.
Therefore, encourage one another and build one another up, as indeed you do.11 For which cause comfort one another; and edify one another, as you also do.
We ask you, brothers, to respect those who are laboring among you and who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you,12 And we beseech you, brethren, to know them who labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you:
and to show esteem for them with special love on account of their work. Be at peace among yourselves.13 That you esteem them more abundantly in charity, for their work's sake. Have peace with them.
We urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, cheer the fainthearted, support the weak, be patient with all.14 And we beseech you, brethren, rebuke the unquiet, comfort the feeble minded, support the weak, be patient towards all men.
See that no one returns evil for evil; rather, always seek what is good (both) for each other and for all.15 See that none render evil for evil to any man; but ever follow that which is good towards each other, and towards all men.
Rejoice always.16 Always rejoice.
Pray without ceasing.17 Pray without ceasing.
In all circumstances give thanks, for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.18 In all things give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you all.
Do not quench the Spirit.19 Extinguish not the spirit.
Do not despise prophetic utterances.20 Despise not prophecies.
Test everything; retain what is good.21 But prove all things; hold fast that which is good.
Refrain from every kind of evil.22 From all appearance of evil refrain yourselves.
May the God of peace himself make you perfectly holy and may you entirely, spirit, soul, and body, be preserved blameless for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.23 And may the God of peace himself sanctify you in all things; that your whole spirit, and soul, and body, may be preserved blameless in the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
The one who calls you is faithful, and he will also accomplish it.24 He is faithful who hath called you, who also will do it.
Brothers, pray for us (too).25 Brethren, pray for us.
Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss.26 Salute all the brethren with a holy kiss.
I adjure you by the Lord that this letter be read to all the brothers.27 I charge you by the Lord, that this epistle be read to all the holy brethren.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.
