Then the whole assembly of them arose and brought him before Pilate.1 And the whole multitude of them rising up, led him to Pilate.
They brought charges against him, saying, "We found this man misleading our people; he opposes the payment of taxes to Caesar and maintains that he is the Messiah, a king."2 And they began to accuse him, saying: We have found this man perverting our nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, and saying that he is Christ the king.
Pilate asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" He said to him in reply, "You say so."3 And Pilate asked him, saying: Art thou the king of the Jews? But he answering, said: Thou sayest it.
Pilate then addressed the chief priests and the crowds, "I find this man not guilty."4 And Pilate said to the chief priests and to the multitudes: I find no cause in this man.
But they were adamant and said, "He is inciting the people with his teaching throughout all Judea, from Galilee where he began even to here."5 But they were more earnest, saying: He stirreth up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee to this place.
On hearing this Pilate asked if the man was a Galilean;6 But Pilate hearing Galilee, asked if the man were of Galilee?
and upon learning that he was under Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod who was in Jerusalem at that time.7 And when he understood that he was of Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him away to Herod, who was also himself at Jerusalem, in those days.
Herod was very glad to see Jesus; he had been wanting to see him for a long time, for he had heard about him and had been hoping to see him perform some sign.8 And Herod, seeing Jesus, was very glad; for he was desirous of a long time to see him, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to see some sign wrought by him.
He questioned him at length, but he gave him no answer.9 And he questioned him in many words. But he answered him nothing.
The chief priests and scribes, meanwhile, stood by accusing him harshly.10 And the chief priests and the scribes stood by, earnestly accusing him.
(Even) Herod and his soldiers treated him contemptuously and mocked him, and after clothing him in resplendent garb, he sent him back to Pilate.11 And Herod with his army set him at nought, and mocked him, putting on him a white garment, and sent him back to Pilate.
Herod and Pilate became friends that very day, even though they had been enemies formerly.12 And Herod and Pilate were made friends, that same day; for before they were enemies one to another.
Pilate then summoned the chief priests, the rulers, and the people13 And Pilate, calling together the chief priests, and the magistrates, and the people,
and said to them, "You brought this man to me and accused him of inciting the people to revolt. I have conducted my investigation in your presence and have not found this man guilty of the charges you have brought against him,14 Said to them: You have presented unto me this man, as one that perverteth the people; and behold I, having examined him before you, find no cause in this man, in those things wherein you accuse him.
nor did Herod, for he sent him back to us. So no capital crime has been committed by him.15 No, nor Herod neither. For I sent you to him, and behold, nothing worthy of death is done to him.
Therefore I shall have him flogged and then release him."16 I will chastise him therefore, and release him.
17 Now of necessity he was to release unto them one upon the feast day.
But all together they shouted out, "Away with this man! Release Barabbas to us."18 But the whole multitude together cried out, saying: Away with this man, and release unto us Barabbas:
(Now Barabbas had been imprisoned for a rebellion that had taken place in the city and for murder.)19 Who, for a certain sedition made in the city, and for a murder, was cast into prison.
Again Pilate addressed them, still wishing to release Jesus,20 And Pilate again spoke to them, desiring to release Jesus.
but they continued their shouting, "Crucify him! Crucify him!"21 But they cried again, saying: Crucify him, crucify him.
Pilate addressed them a third time, "What evil has this man done? I found him guilty of no capital crime. Therefore I shall have him flogged and then release him."22 And he said to them the third time: Why, what evil hath this man done? I find no cause of death in him. I will chastise him therefore, and let him go.
With loud shouts, however, they persisted in calling for his crucifixion, and their voices prevailed.23 But they were instant with loud voices, requiring that he might be crucified; and their voices prevailed.
The verdict of Pilate was that their demand should be granted.24 And Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they required.
So he released the man who had been imprisoned for rebellion and murder, for whom they asked, and he handed Jesus over to them to deal with as they wished.25 And he released unto them him who for murder and sedition, had been cast into prison, whom they had desired; but Jesus he delivered up to their will.
As they led him away they took hold of a certain Simon, a Cyrenian, who was coming in from the country; and after laying the cross on him, they made him carry it behind Jesus.26 And as they led him away, they laid hold of one Simon of Cyrene, coming from the country; and they laid the cross on him to carry after Jesus.
A large crowd of people followed Jesus, including many women who mourned and lamented him.27 And there followed him a great multitude of people, and of women, who bewailed and lamented him.
Jesus turned to them and said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep instead for yourselves and for your children,28 But Jesus turning to them, said: Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not over me; but weep for yourselves, and for your children.
for indeed, the days are coming when people will say, 'Blessed are the barren, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed.'29 For behold, the days shall come, wherein they will say: Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that have not borne, and the paps that have not given suck.
At that time people will say to the mountains, 'Fall upon us!' and to the hills, 'Cover us!'30 Then shall they begin to say to the mountains: Fall upon us; and to the hills: Cover us.
for if these things are done when the wood is green what will happen when it is dry?"31 For if in the green wood they do these things, what shall be done in the dry?
Now two others, both criminals, were led away with him to be executed.32 And there were also two other malefactors led with him to be put to death.
When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him and the criminals there, one on his right, the other on his left.33 And when they were come to the place which is called Calvary, they crucified him there; and the robbers, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.
[Then Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, they know not what they do."] They divided his garments by casting lots.34 And Jesus said: Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. But they, dividing his garments, cast lots.
The people stood by and watched; the rulers, meanwhile, sneered at him and said, "He saved others, let him save himself if he is the chosen one, the Messiah of God."35 And the people stood beholding, and the rulers with them derided him, saying: He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ, the elect of God.
Even the soldiers jeered at him. As they approached to offer him wine36 And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar,
they called out, "If you are King of the Jews, save yourself."37 And saying: If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself.
Above him there was an inscription that read, "This is the King of the Jews."38 And there was also a superscription written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
Now one of the criminals hanging there reviled Jesus, saying, "Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us."39 And one of those robbers who were hanged, blasphemed him, saying: If thou be Christ, save thyself and us.
The other, however, rebuking him, said in reply, "Have you no fear of God, for you are subject to the same condemnation?40 But the other answering, rebuked him, saying: Neither dost thou fear God, seeing thou art condemned under the same condemnation?
And indeed, we have been condemned justly, for the sentence we received corresponds to our crimes, but this man has done nothing criminal."41 And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this man hath done no evil.
Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom."42 And he said to Jesus: Lord, remember me when thou shalt come into thy kingdom.
He replied to him, "Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise."43 And Jesus said to him: Amen I say to thee, this day thou shalt be with me in paradise.
It was now about noon and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon44 And it was almost the sixth hour; and there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.
because of an eclipse of the sun. Then the veil of the temple was torn down the middle.45 And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst.
Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Father, into your hands I commend my spirit"; and when he had said this he breathed his last.46 And Jesus crying out with a loud voice, said: Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit. And saying this, he gave up the ghost.
The centurion who witnessed what had happened glorified God and said, "This man was innocent beyond doubt."47 Now the centurion, seeing what was done, glorified God, saying: Indeed this was a just man.
When all the people who had gathered for this spectacle saw what had happened, they returned home beating their breasts;48 And all the multitude of them that were come together to that sight, and saw the things that were done, returned striking their breasts.
but all his acquaintances stood at a distance, including the women who had followed him from Galilee and saw these events.49 And all his acquaintance, and the women that had followed him from Galilee, stood afar off, beholding these things.
Now there was a virtuous and righteous man named Joseph who, though he was a member of the council,50 And behold there was a man named Joseph, who was a counsellor, a good and just man,
had not consented to their plan of action. He came from the Jewish town of Arimathea and was awaiting the kingdom of God.51 (The same had not consented to their counsel and doings;) of Arimathea, a city of Judea; who also himself looked for the kingdom of God.
He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.52 This man went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus.
After he had taken the body down, he wrapped it in a linen cloth and laid him in a rock-hewn tomb in which no one had yet been buried.53 And taking him down, he wrapped him in fine linen, and laid him in a sepulchre that was hewed in stone, wherein never yet any man had been laid.
It was the day of preparation, and the sabbath was about to begin.54 And it was the day of the Parasceve, and the sabbath drew on.
The women who had come from Galilee with him followed behind, and when they had seen the tomb and the way in which his body was laid in it,55 And the women that were come with him from Galilee, following after, saw the sepulchre, and how his body was laid.
they returned and prepared spices and perfumed oils. Then they rested on the sabbath according to the commandment.56 And returning, they prepared spices and ointments; and on the sabbath day they rested, according to the commandment.
