NEW AMERICAN BIBLEDOUAI-RHEIMS
When he looked up he saw some wealthy people putting their offerings into the treasury1 And looking on, he saw the rich men cast their gifts into the treasury.
and he noticed a poor widow putting in two small coins.2 And he saw also a certain poor widow casting in two brass mites.
He said, "I tell you truly, this poor widow put in more than all the rest;3 And he said: Verily I say to you, that this poor widow hath cast in more than they all:
for those others have all made offerings from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has offered her whole livelihood."4 For all these have of their abundance cast into the offerings of God: but she of her want, hath cast in all the living that she had.
While some people were speaking about how the temple was adorned with costly stones and votive offerings, he said,5 And some saying of the temple, that it was adorned with goodly stones and gifts, he said:
"All that you see here--the days will come when there will not be left a stone upon another stone that will not be thrown down."6 These things which you see, the days will come in which there shall not be left a stone upon a stone that shall not be thrown down.
Then they asked him, "Teacher, when will this happen? And what sign will there be when all these things are about to happen?"7 And they asked him, saying: Master, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign when they shall begin to come to pass?
He answered, "See that you not be deceived, for many will come in my name, saying, 'I am he,' and 'The time has come.' Do not follow them!8 Who said: Take heed you be not seduced; for many will come in my name, saying, I am he; and the time is at hand: go ye not therefore after them.
When you hear of wars and insurrections, do not be terrified; for such things must happen first, but it will not immediately be the end."9 And when you shall hear of wars and seditions, be not terrified: these things must first come to pass; but the end is not yet presently.
Then he said to them, "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.10 Then he said to them: Nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.
There will be powerful earthquakes, famines, and plagues from place to place; and awesome sights and mighty signs will come from the sky.11 And there shall be great earthquakes in divers places, and pestilences, and famines, and terrors from heaven; and there shall be great signs.
"Before all this happens, however, they will seize and persecute you, they will hand you over to the synagogues and to prisons, and they will have you led before kings and governors because of my name.12 But before all these things, they will lay their hands upon you, and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and into prisons, dragging you before kings and governors, for my name's sake.
It will lead to your giving testimony.13 And it shall happen unto you for a testimony.
Remember, you are not to prepare your defense beforehand,14 Lay it up therefore into your hearts, not to meditate before how you shall answer:
for I myself shall give you a wisdom in speaking that all your adversaries will be powerless to resist or refute.15 For I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to resist and gainsay.
You will even be handed over by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends, and they will put some of you to death.16 And you shall be betrayed by your parents and brethren, and kinsmen and friends; and some of you they will put to death.
You will be hated by all because of my name,17 And you shall be hated by all men for my name's sake.
but not a hair on your head will be destroyed.18 But a hair of your head shall not perish.
By your perseverance you will secure your lives.19 In your patience you shall possess your souls.
"When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, know that its desolation is at hand.20 And when you shall see Jerusalem compassed about with an army; then know that the desolation thereof is at hand.
Then those in Judea must flee to the mountains. Let those within the city escape from it, and let those in the countryside not enter the city,21 Then let those who are in Judea, flee to the mountains; and those who are in the midst thereof, depart out: and those who are in the countries, not enter into it.
for these days are the time of punishment when all the scriptures are fulfilled.22 For these are the days of vengeance, that all things may be fulfilled, that are written.
Woe to pregnant women and nursing mothers in those days, for a terrible calamity will come upon the earth and a wrathful judgment upon this people.23 But woe to them that are with child, and give suck in those days; for there shall be great distress in the land, and wrath upon this people.
They will fall by the edge of the sword and be taken as captives to all the Gentiles; and Jerusalem will be trampled underfoot by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.24 And they shall fall by the edge of the sword; and shall be led away captives into all nations; and Jerusalem shall be trodden down by the Gentiles; till the times of the nations be fulfilled.
"There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and on earth nations will be in dismay, perplexed by the roaring of the sea and the waves.25 And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, by reason of the confusion of the roaring of the sea and of the waves;
People will die of fright in anticipation of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.26 Men withering away for fear, and expectation of what shall come upon the whole world. For the powers of heaven shall be moved;
And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.27 And then they shall see the Son of man coming in a cloud, with great power and majesty.
But when these signs begin to happen, stand erect and raise your heads because your redemption is at hand."28 But when these things begin to come to pass, look up, and lift up your heads, because your redemption is at hand.
He taught them a lesson. "Consider the fig tree and all the other trees.29 And he spoke to them in a similitude. See the fig tree, and all the trees:
When their buds burst open, you see for yourselves and know that summer is now near;30 When they now shoot forth their fruit, you know that summer is nigh;
in the same way, when you see these things happening, know that the kingdom of God is near.31 So you also, when you shall see these things come to pass, know that the kingdom of God is at hand.
Amen, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place.32 Amen, I say to you, this generation shall not pass away, till all things be fulfilled.
Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.33 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.
"Beware that your hearts do not become drowsy from carousing and drunkenness and the anxieties of daily life, and that day catch you by surprise34 And take heed to yourselves, lest perhaps your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting and drunkenness, and the cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly.
like a trap. For that day will assault everyone who lives on the face of the earth.35 For as a snare shall it come upon all that sit upon the face of the whole earth.
Be vigilant at all times and pray that you have the strength to escape the tribulations that are imminent and to stand before the Son of Man."36 Watch ye, therefore, praying at all times, that you may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that are to come, and to stand before the Son of man.
During the day, Jesus was teaching in the temple area, but at night he would leave and stay at the place called the Mount of Olives.37 And in the daytime, he was teaching in the temple; but at night, going out, he abode in the mount that is called Olivet.
And all the people would get up early each morning to listen to him in the temple area.38 And all the people came early in the morning to him in the temple, to hear him.
