1 My son, if you receive my words and treasure my commands,	1 - Figliuol mio, se vuoi accogliere le mie parole, e mettere in serbo i miei precetti,
2 Turning your ear to wisdom, inclining your heart to understanding;	2 per ben prestar orecchio alla sapienza, piega il tuo cuore a conoscere la prudenza.
3 Yes, if you call to intelligence, and to understanding raise your voice;	3 Perchè se avrai invocata la sapienza e piegato il cuore alla prudenza,
4 If you seek her like silver, and like hidden treasures search her out:	4 e se l'andrai cercando come il denaro, scavando come per scoprire tesori nascosti;
5 Then will you understand the fear of the LORD; the knowledge of God you will find;	5 allora tu intenderai il timore di Dio e avrai trovata la scienza del Signore.
6 For the LORD gives wisdom, from his mouth come knowledge and understanding;	6 Perchè è Dio che dà la sapienza, dalla sua bocca la prudenza e la scienza.
7 He has counsel in store for the upright, he is the shield of those who walk honestly,	7 Egli tiene riserbata la salvezza pei buoni, e proteggerà coloro che si diportano onestamente,
8 Guarding the paths of justice, protecting the way of his pious ones.	8 vegliando le vie della giustizia e facendosi custode delle strade dei santi.
9 Then you will understand rectitude and justice, honesty, every good path;	9 Allora capirai la giustizia e la rettitudine l'equità ed ogni buon avviamento.
10 For wisdom will enter your heart, knowledge will please your soul,	10 Quando la sapienza entrerà nel tuo cuore e la scienza farà le delizie dell'anima tua,
11 Discretion will watch over you, understanding will guard you;	11 il consiglio ti custodirà e la prudenza veglierà su di te
12 Saving you from the way of evil men, from men of perverse speech,	12 per scamparti dalla mala via, da quei che parlano perversamente,
13 Who leave the straight paths to walk in the way of darkness,	13 che disertano il retto sentiero e battono le strade delle tenebre;
14 Who delight in doing evil, rejoice in perversity;	14 che godono del malfare e tripudiano nelle cose più pessime,
15 Whose ways are crooked, and devious their paths;	15 uomini dai torti sentierie dalla condotta vituperevole.
16 Saving you from the wife of another, from the adulteress with her smooth words,	16 Per scamparti dalla donna che non è tua, dalla donna d'altri che fa il parlare lezioso,
17 Who forsakes the companion of her youth and forgets the pact with her God;	17 e abbandona colui che l'ha condotta giovane sposa e dimentica il patto del suo Dio.
18 For her path sinks down to death, and her footsteps lead to the shades;	18 La sua casa pende sull'abisso della Morte e le sue strade tendono verso l'Inferno.
19 None who enter thereon come back again, or gain the paths of life.	19 Tutti quelli che entrano da essa, non ritorneranno indietro e non riprenderanno più i sentieri della vita.
20 Thus you may walk in the way of good men, and keep to the paths of the just.	20 Questo affinchè tu cammini sulla buona strada e ti mantenga sui sentieri dei giusti;
21 For the upright will dwell in the land, the honest will remain in it;	21 perchè gli uomini dabbene abiteranno la terra e gli onesti ci resteranno.
22 But the wicked will be cut off from the land, the faithless will be rooted out of it.	22 Ma gli empi saranno sterminati dal suolo e i malfattori strappati via da esso.
