NEW AMERICAN BIBLENEW JERUSALEM
The prayer of one afflicted and wasting away whose anguish is poured out before the LORD.1 [Prayer of someone afflicted, who in misfortune pours out sorrows before Yahweh] Yahweh, hear myprayer, let my cry for help reach you.
LORD, hear my prayer; let my cry come to you.2 Do not turn away your face from me when I am in trouble; bend down and listen to me, when I cal ,be quick to answer me!
Do not hide your face from me now that I am in distress. Turn your ear to me; when I call, answer me quickly.3 For my days are vanishing like smoke, my bones burning like an oven;
For my days vanish like smoke; my bones burn away as in a furnace.4 like grass struck by blight, my heart is withering, I forget to eat my meals.
I am withered, dried up like grass, too wasted to eat my food.5 From the effort of voicing my groans my bones stick out through my skin.
From my loud groaning I become just skin and bones.6 I am like a desert-owl in the wastes, a screech-owl among ruins,
I am like a desert owl, like an owl among the ruins.7 I keep vigil and moan like a lone bird on a roof.
I lie awake and moan, like a lone sparrow on the roof.8 Al day long my enemies taunt me, those who once praised me now use me as a curse.
All day long my enemies taunt me; in their rage, they make my name a curse.9 Ashes are the food that I eat, my drink is mingled with tears,
I eat ashes like bread, mingle my drink with tears.10 because of your fury and anger, since you have raised me up only to cast me away;
Because of your furious wrath, you lifted me up just to cast me down.11 my days are like a fading shadow, I am withering up like grass.
My days are like a lengthening shadow; I wither like the grass.12 But you, Yahweh, are enthroned for ever, each generation in turn remembers you.
But you, LORD, are enthroned forever; your renown is for all generations.13 Rise up, take pity on Zion! the time has come to have mercy on her, the moment has come;
You will again show mercy to Zion; now is the time for pity; the appointed time has come.14 for your servants love her very stones, are moved to pity by her dust.
Its stones are dear to your servants; its dust moves them to pity.15 Then wil the nations revere the name of Yahweh, and al the kings of the earth your glory;
The nations shall revere your name, LORD, all the kings of the earth, your glory,16 when Yahweh builds Zion anew, he will be seen in his glory;
Once the LORD has rebuilt Zion and appeared in glory,17 he wil turn to hear the prayer of the destitute, and wil not treat their prayer with scorn.
Heeding the plea of the lowly, not scorning their prayer.18 This shall be put on record for a future generation, and a people yet to be born shal praise God:
Let this be written for the next generation, for a people not yet born, that they may praise the LORD:19 Yahweh has leaned down from the heights of his sanctuary, has looked down from heaven to earth,
"The LORD looked down from the holy heights, viewed the earth from heaven,20 to listen to the sighing of the captive, and set free those condemned to death,
To attend to the groaning of the prisoners, to release those doomed to die."21 to proclaim the name of Yahweh in Zion, his praise in Jerusalem;
Then the LORD'S name will be declared on Zion, the praise of God in Jerusalem,22 nations wil gather together, and kingdoms to worship Yahweh.
When all peoples and kingdoms gather to worship the LORD.23 In my journeying my strength has failed on the way;
God has shattered my strength in mid-course, has cut short my days.24 let me know the short time I have left. Do not take me away before half my days are done, for youryears run on from age to age.
I plead, O my God, do not take me in the midst of my days. Your years last through all generations.25 Long ago you laid earth's foundations, the heavens are the work of your hands.
Of old you laid the earth's foundations; the heavens are the work of your hands.26 They pass away but you remain; they al wear out like a garment, like outworn clothes you changethem;
They perish, but you remain; they all wear out like a garment; Like clothing you change them and they are changed,27 but you never alter, and your years never end.
but you are the same, your years have no end.28 The children of those who serve you wil dwel secure, and their descendants live on in yourpresence.
May the children of your servants live on; may their descendants live in your presence.
